I love this series and the characters so much. I am glad that Ellie managed to make it into this book. I can't wait for the next one in the series to come out.
This is a tale full of intrigue with a doubly delicious twist at the end. Showing not only the normal l investigating and interviewing but the importance of intelligence gathering . There fantastic camaraderie between the team members and a genuine warmth. I would definitely read more and I thoroughly enjoyed the Camborne Killings
Note: Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and author Sally Rigby for the advanced reader copy of this book. What follows is my unbiased review of the book.
The Camborne Killings is the fourth book in author Sally Rigby's Cornwall Murder Mystery series. I hadn't read the previous three books when I received this as an advanced reader copy. I read this in a little less than 48 hours, and was not disappointed.
Detective Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price are called to a grisly murder scene in a barn. The victim is a retired police officer. Next to her body is a note with "ten green bottles." The saying is from a children's nursery rhyme and after a second body is discovered with "nine green bottles" on a note near it, they are worried that they have a serial killer on their hands who targets police.
When one of the team members is injured, Matt brings in a friend from his earlier years at a different precinct who is a whizz at investigating on the internet. At first, there's tension there, but she soon proves her worth to the team. Her research soon has them following leads within the police themselves, uncovering decades-old corruption at the highest levels.
The Camborne Killings is a great police procedural. Lauren and Matt are a great team and work well together. I didn't think the research online was that particularly hard, but maybe that's because I'm used to searching for information on the internet. If there's one complaint I have, it's that the investigation relies a little too much on modern technology. At one point, Lauren complains that not having CCTV footage or DNA leaves them with nothing to go on. It wasn't that long ago when that technology didn't even exist and crimes still managed to get solved.
Other than that, though, I really loved the story. The characters are well-written and behave in a way consistent with being a police officer, even when their personal lives bleed over into the investigation. The pace is great as the story evolves and feels quite natural. They must tread carefully as the investigation points higher and higher among the police, and do so without it feeling forced. The politics of doing this is well-depicted, as others in authority try to keep their hands clean in case everything goes wrong, leaving Lauren and Matt to take the heat if that happens.
This is a good book to take along with you for some easy reading that will capture your attention. I'm planning to go back and check out the rest of this series after reading this. Sally Rigby has a terrific universe with the characters here and I look forward to more of their adventures.
The Camborne Killings is book 4 in A Cornwall Murder Mystery. Please read warnings!
I didn't read the other books in the series but was easily able to pick up this book and read it so IMO it can be read as a standalone but it's well written so I think it would be worth reading in order. When a retired cop turns up dead they start looking for a killer, but when a second cop turns up dead things get really interesting. Will they figure out who done it before the next murder? I recommend reading to find out!
This was an okay read in more the cozy genre with a likeable cast of characters and it presented an enjoyable romp in the countryside . It has the feeling of the Father Brown books
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review book
The Camborne Killings is the fourth installment in the author's Cornwall Murder Mystery series, but the first one I had read. Although I could tell there was some context I was missing in relation to the police team's dynamics, it in no way hindered my enjoyment of the story or kept me from totally understanding what was going on. Plus I've the pleasure of discovering a new author I like, and she has several series to immerse oneself in.
The Camborne Killings is written in a genre that I find unique to British crime novels. They aren't a cozy, because there is realistic police work going on, and not a local sleuth solving the crime. The crimes are more complex and less character driven, but not overly gory and violent. I quite enjoy this style of book, intermixed with the grittier murder mysteries I read, and I also like that the book wasn't overly long and clipped along at a quick pace.
Chief Detective Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price are faced with a crime that is very touchy because it might involve one of their own officers. They are greatly helped by Ellie, who is visiting and steps in to do some computer detecting. The plot was more complex and convoluted than I expected when I started the book. I was able to read it very quickly and it kept me intrigued the whole time.
This was probably a 4.4 read for me, but I'm rounding up, which I always do when I discover a new author I like.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Camborne Killings is an enjoyable romp in the countryside with Detectives Lauren Pengelly and Matt Price heading the investigation into three murders that happen in rapid succession.
This was a quick and pleasant read, I would class it firmly in the cosy arena. I found the characters a likeable bunch, they have a definite air of camaraderie about them, and it was as if we were all old friends, even though this is my first in the series. Matt is warm and fuzzy, like a teddy bear, while Lauren is a little more prickly and reserved - especially at work, but she softens towards the end.
Ellie is a great asset to the team (but will they keep her?), and I have rather a soft spot for the out-of-action Tamsyn, who broke a leg skateboarding when drunk. Because - in her own words - life is short.
The ending was a bit too 'pat' and convenient for my liking, I doubt dangerous criminals are quite as accommodating in real life! The pieces all fell into place just a little too easily.
This is book four in the Cornwall Murder Mysteries series.
A solid three and a half stars.
A woman is found dead with a knife through the heart and an odd note was left. Detectives Lauren and Matt are on the case to try to find the killer. But the very next day they find the second victim very much the same as the first. They realize they need to work fast to prevent others from dying. Thankfully Matt’s friend Ellie is in town to assist with research.
This was an average crime mystery. It was a fairly quick read. The whole plot was easily guessed early on in the story, with no surprising twists, but it still kept my attention. I would have loved a little more detail in the characters and the crimes committed. If you are looking for a light and quick read, you will enjoy this.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm publishing for the complementary ebook.
DI Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price find a suspicious death with an ominous message in the depths of the Cornish countryside. What follows is a twisty investigation complete with more deaths, connections close to home and a race against time before someone else dies. It's good to meet a new detective and catch up with the regular team, although the story mainly concentrates on Lauren and Matt. The story is rooted in the work lives of the detectives in this book, but the plot is compelling and the suspects credible. The pacing is critical to this story. I like the characters, the dynamic between the team and the story's intensity.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Set in Cornwall the local detectives have a murder with a note "Ten Green Bottles"; not long after there's another murder, another note "nine green bottles" and they fear that there is a serial killer around. Detectives Pengelly and Matt, and their team, have to find out if and how the two may be connected as well as worrying about the rest of the old rhyme - are they going to have 10 murders to solve? The link goes back 30 years but there are plenty of twists, turns, revenge, corruption to clear away before the denouement. Well written characters, pleasant people and lovely descriptions of the Cornish countryside. More please. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. The 4th murder mystery set in Cornwall is as well written as the previous books. I was gripped from the beginning as Detective's Lauren & Matt set out to solve the murder before another happens. The team are all well written each play a part in the solving of the mystery.. I also enjoy the description of the Cornish countryside.
I can recommend this book to all who enjoy murder mystery books.
When DI Pengelly & her team are called out to a body, found with a note saying, "Ten Green Bottles" it seems ominous & sure enough there are more bodies & it looks like someone is leaking information. DS Matt Price has a friend from Lenchester (his old nick) staying close by. She is taking time off after a traumatic event. Ellie is a whizz with computers & when this case becomes complex she is temporarily assigned to the team & proves invaluable.
As all the books in this series it was a good twisty police procedural. I love how the team is developing & I'm hoping Ellie may be more than a temporary addition. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
Carmel Driscoll, a former police officer has been found murdered in a barn at her home near Penzance in a particularly guesome manner. Beside her, a note has been secured to the ground using the murder weapon, with the cryptic words Ten green bottles are written on it.
Detective Lauren Pengelly and her partner Matt Price are called in to investigate.
Another body is soon discovered. Murdered in a similar manner, and with a note reading Nine green bottles.
The detectives realise that this could be the start of something big. Little do they realise just how big!
An excellent read, with likable characters and a great storyline that keeps you hooked, and turning those pages.
I will be on the lookout for other novels by the same author!
This book was incredible! I love a good crime story with twists! This book really was unputdownable!
This is the fourth in the author's DI Pengelly and DS Price, Cornwall series and I found it equally enjoyable as the previous three.
It is a simply written series and the focus on dialogue doesn't leave room for tension but I still enjoy the familiar characters and easy flowing storyline. I thought that The Camborne Killings was cleverly plotted and I was gripped throughout.
Another enjoyable read and I'll look forward to the next in the series.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
3.5 stars
Another fabulous read in this series by Sally,
It is a fast paced story line but easy to follow. It has believable characters. I look forward to reading more.
I love this series! The characters are great, and I enjoy the crimes and how they are solved. Keep them coming. Sorry I was late reviewing this one, as I was visiting Cornwall, and just got back! I highly recommend this series, and it's best to read them in order.
This is the first book that I have read by Sally Rigby but hopefully it wont be the last, although it was the fourth in a series I didn't feel the need to have read the first three but I did feel that I wanted to. I like to see how the police put all the pieces together in solving murders. It was a great police procedural story with the team working together and achieving the right result. It had plenty of characters in play and I enjoyed the characters back stories, not too much but enough to allow you to get an idea of them. Interesting characters, gorgeous scenery that came to life and a brilliant plot.
I would thoroughly recommend it and enjoyed reading it.
This was a great police procedural story with the team working together and achieving the right result. Some great characters and a fast moving storyline. Very apt conclusion.
This is the first book that I have read by Sally Rigby but hopefully it wont be the last, although it was the fourth in a series I didn't feel the need to have read the first three but I did feel that I wanted to.
DS Matt Price had reluctantly left Lenchester and moved to Cornwall after the tragic death of his wife, it was where his parents lived and he needed help looking after his young daughter.
He had settled well into the team in Cambourne and worked well with his partner and boss, DI Lauren Pengelly.
DC Ellie Naylor, an ex colleague and close friend of Matt was taking a break in Cornwall after a distressing few weeks at home.
A phone call from DI Pengelley interrupted their catch up chat, they had a gruesome murder on their hands, Matt needed to work.
This murder was complicated, even more so when the victim was found to be an ex police officer, The small team at Cambourne were stretched after their computer expert had an accident, Matt convinced Lauren that, if she would agree, Ellie could be a great help, her computer skills were legendary. Both Lauren and the team were reluctant at first but Ellie soon proved her worth, this was the most delicate and convoluted case that the team had encountered, the body count started escalating, worryingly all ex police officers, what was their common denominator ? what linked them together ? how many more would die ?
As Ellie dug deep for information the team became more and more astounded and worried, the clues were leading in a direction that non of them wanted to follow.
This is a suspense filled story with many twists and turns, red herrings and wonderful characters, I will definitely look out for the next book in the series.
Thank you Storm Publishing and Net Gallery for this ARC, my review is totally voluntary.
