This is a really fun and great book for super young readers (i.e. preschoolers). This is due to the repetitive and simple format and, while these might sound like bad qualities for a book to have, they actually worked out really well for this book. Additionally, young readers will be able to relate to this book to an extent. One example of this is making baked goods out of sand (or non-edible materials found in nature). This makes this book more personal to kids, which is great and will definitely make for a better reading experience. It will also foster imagination thanks to the beautiful illustrations and the ending. The illustrator worked with gradients, depth, and light to make a really vivid book. It was super impressive how they did this! Lastly, the ending was highly unique and creative - I didn't see it coming at all! It teaches kids both to be creative and that the solutions to their problems might not be right in front of them.
Great book!
This book has very pretty beach and ocean illustrations. I enjoyed the imagination and persistence of the little girl in the story. The repetitive text flows easily as well.
Sand Cakes is a book you'll want to devour with your family next summer before you go to the beach. Some of my favorite memories with my kids is being near the water and watching them make food concoctions in the sand and asking, "Would you like some?" And of course you always take it and pretend to cobble it up. Our young friend in Sand Cakes though has a different experience. One that I wasn't sure how it would end but definitely left my heart feeling warm and fuzzy. Kids won't be able to resist the playful and whimsical illustrations. And of course, anything written by Kallie George is going to be charming and a delight.
Thank you Penquin Random House and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a cute audiobook!! Would recommend. Reminded me of something I would have done as a child lol
This was a very cute kids beach book. While I was unable to get it to load into my Kindle i was able to read it in the NetGalley app.
Fun sandy day at the beach creating all sorts of treats that no one will eat. The illustrations were sweet.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
As advised by NetGalley, I will NOT base part of my review on the complete inability of this to load on my Kindle Fire so I could appreciate these gorgeous illustrations. With that being said: this book is sweet. Short and sweet and a little bit silly. I love that the little girl (from what I was able to see of the illustrations as they were displayed in chunks and not together) realizes at the end that the crabs and other animals appreciate her "cakes." Overall, I loved this and would love to get a physical copy when it comes out so myself (and my toddler!) can fully appreciate this beautiful children's book. Five stars.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this e-ARC!
This book is honestly so adorable. The art is cute, and I loved the end result of the story. You knew someone was eventually gonna support this little girl and her sand creations, and I audibly "awww-ed" when the sea became her best customer. Definitely recommend for the little ones <3
Fantastic picture book for summer! Sand Cakes follows a young girl, who is "baking" fantastic treats out of sand, but can't get anyone to eat them. I really loved the illustrations. The beach vibes were fantastic, and I know I would have adored this story as a young child.
Thanks to NetGalley, Kallie George, and Penguin Random House for the chance to read and review! My thoughts and opinions are my own.
