This debut novel is messy, honest, and deeply human. It follows Sunny, a young teacher trying to hold herself together while her best friend lies in the hospital, and every emotion is dialled up to full volume. The writing feels intentionally chaotic—fragmented, vulnerable, and occasionally overwhelming—which perfectly matches the emotional state of the characters. It’s not always easy to read, but it’s authentic and raw in a way that sticks with you.

I enjoy a quiet, character driven novel quite a bit. I did enjoy our main three characters, even if they weren’t the most lovable at times. Their dynamic was intriguing, if not a little confusing. My biggest issue with this novel was the constant cutting to different scenes and the perspective it was told from. It didn’t feel cohesive enough for me to get lost in the story.

This book is a fascinating exploration of relationships, identity, and the connections that shape us. Told through vignettes out of chronological order, the book paints an intimate portrait of Sunny navigating her 20s while her best friend, Charlie, faces a life-threatening surgery.

Fans of literary fiction like *A Little Life* and *Normal People* will find similarities in the complex, cyclical relationships and the deep emotional resonance. Charlie serves as both antagonist and catalyst, with the characters repeatedly cycling in and out of each other’s lives. However, some elements—such as first-person narration of Charlie’s dreamscape and a tangential essay on Camus—felt distracting.

While the non-linear storytelling added depth, it occasionally muddled the narrative, especially with a large cast (two characters sharing the same name didn’t help). Yet, the novel’s open ending and poignant themes invite introspection, reminding readers that life is shaped by what we let in. A solid pick for fans of deeply personal fiction.

Friendships in our youth can live on a tiperope - living and dying on a taught and unstable razor's edge of emotions. The non-traditional narrative of of this story made it a touch of a tougher read to get through, but if you can hold it - it will hold you through it.

Okay books shouldn’t be this sad! This one hit me right in the feels but god it was a good type of pain. I feel like we all have. Charlie in our life.

Truthfully, I originally had requested this book for the title because it just sounded so “Jenn coded” as people say. I ended up really enjoying it a lot more than I thought! The out of order flashbacks of their lives felt chaotic but I liked it a lot. I love seeing all of the relationships and how they came to be. The book is full of complex characters and emotions and everything I dream of literary fiction to have.

This is one of those books where it could be 1000 pages long and I would still want more.

The story revolves around Sunny, Louise and Charlie. After one of these friends is in accident, we deep dive into the beginning, middle and the current of their friendships all told from the pov of Sunny.

Essentially, this is the story about the highs and loves of friendship and what it means to love on another unconditionally.
