This felt like a poorly done fanfic of “The Hating Game” by Sally Thorne. The characters lacked depth and the plot was a mess.
Thanks to NetGalley and Burning Chair Limited for the eGalley in exchange for my honest review.
The story stars with an interesting premise but falls flat in executing it. An office romance premise with mental health rep could have been amazing but it was too repetitive in its narrative and not convincing enough. Emily and Jack couldn't convince me to root for them, though I was happy to see them have their hea.
I struggled with reading this one, so many inconsistencies, so much happening, but also not happening. I'm sad because I really liked the cover and the idea of the plot in the description
First, the characters come across as flat and lacking depth. Everything seems very surface level, the development of their personalities and motivations just didn’t seem defined. I was struggling to connect with any of the characters, especially our main couple.
I truly hope that this book finds its audience, unfortunately it wasn’t for me and there were just too many small things that tallied up into me not enjoying this story.
Honestly, based off of the title and the synopsis I expected so much more from this book.
Thank you to NETGALLEY for a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.
It’s never fun writing a less than stellar review but alas, this was a two star read for me.
I felt there was very little character development between main characters Emily and Jack. Unfortunately this led to me not investing in either of them or caring what happened to them.
While Emily suffered a traumatic accident and Jack had a challenging time growing up, neither seemed able to demonstrate any emotional maturity. The jabs between the two of them were more reminiscent of junior high kids than well respected lawyers.
Sadly this one just wasn’t for me.
This book is not the light-hearted rom com it first appears to be.
It’s hard to get into, the writing doesn’t really draw you in and doesn’t flow well.
I carried on until the end, but I completely understand why others DNF’d it.
Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me, but I appreciate the opportunity
thanks netgalley for this arc. I don't know if I read it perhaps at the wrong time (reader's block), but... it didn't grab me, I didn't feel involved in continuing reading. I didn't notice that it's a romcom and I agree with the other reviews that suggest the use of tw. I had to DNF, but I appreciate the opportunity
This book was...not what i expected.
I thought it would be your typical office romance novel but...it was a bit too...dark? for that.
I struggled a bit to get through it and all i can say is that it was just ok.
Thank you to netgalley for the arc. all opinions are my own
Thank you to Netgallery and the author for the ARC!
I wanted to like this book but I had to DNF it.
Not even 20 pages into the book, the author described a barista as "deaf and dumb" like being deaf means you are also inheritly dumb as well. Honestly that rubbed me the wrong way but I pressed on.
Secondly, the main characters are super flat and don't have anything going for them. Their inner monologs are annoying and not relevant to the book. The insta-love was cringe and made me stop reading.
Overall, the author and publisher need to re-do the whole book over and add depth to the characters other than them being lawyers & insta-love trope.
A sweet workplace romance, this book follows Emily & Jack as they first meet at a law firm and adventure off to Bermuda for a case. A lovely story to cozy up to when you need a quick instalove read.
DNF at 10%.
I could not get past the first 10% of this book for various reasons. Most glaring is the writing. It’s disjointed, vague in some areas, overly detailed in others, and the dialogue is not how people talk in real life. The plot is mediocre at best and, frankly, confusing almost immediately. I was disappointed to find this wasn’t anywhere near what I expected.
I very much appreciate the opportunity to read this ARC, and I wish the best to the author!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the early copy. This is my honest review:
I am disappointed to have to say that I did not enjoy this, and for that reason I will keep my review short. I liked the premise of the story, but overall it did not make out to be a good read.
There were parts here and there that I liked, but I could not get myself to like this book altogether.
I could see the potential this could have had, but unfortunately it didn’t deliver.
DNF’d at 20%. This book is just not for me. I have no issues interacting with people who think differently from me, but there was too much progressive/feminist ideology in this story, and it seemed like that was the entire basis.
This had a fun premise, close proximity work place romance and since I'm still in my SUITS era, I was excited to dive into this one. But unfortunately the execution was pretty poor. There were so many sub plots that felt unresolved (their office issues, the random one night stand but actual side character, the friend she made on way to her first day of work, the actual case their working on, plus both of their positions once their managing partner hears about them being together) and it was just so messy. Not to mention, they both have some very heavy past trauma that felt glossed over which made it seem almost heavier if that's possible. I missed the chemistry and heat that comes with close proximity, though the insta love felt realistic given how close the two MCs were working.
The story itself I read in one sitting and was engaging until it ended and quite literally nothing, even their romance, felt like it was resolved.
Thank you Netgalley and Burning Chair Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my review!
Based on the cover and description, I was expecting this to be a rom com. It’s not. It’s too dark for me, and should include a content warning for depression. DNF.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.
Unfortunately at 30% I have to mark this book as a DNF. The characters just feel so flat and there is absolutely zero chemistry between Jack and Emily, and the dialogue is wooden. I wanted to shelve this from around 10% but have pushed on in the hopes it may get better, but sadly this book is Just not for me.
Thank you to the publisher for granting me access to this book via Netgalley.
After a tragic accident, successful New York lawyer Emily Taylor is restarting her career. Having spent a year recovering in the countryside, she is determined to return to work at a boutique law firm in the City of London. When she is partnered with Jack, one of the most successful lawyers. Things don’t go as either of them planned.
Whilst Emily was a likeable character, Jack wasn’t as easy to understand. The romance between the two main leads didn’t feel like they really cared for each other, partly due to the lack of depth in their characters. At times, the pace was quite slow.
This book I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“This Is NOT an Office Romance” by Eloise Fox is an entertaining read that offers some enjoyable moments but ultimately falls short in certain areas. The premise of workplace attraction is intriguing, and the banter between the main characters is witty and engaging. However, the plot can feel predictable at times, and some character arcs lack depth, making it hard to fully invest in their journeys.
While the romantic tension is present, it sometimes feels overshadowed by the more formulaic elements of the story. The pacing could also use some tightening, as certain sections drag on. Overall, it’s a light and fun read, but it may not leave a lasting impression for those seeking a more nuanced exploration of romance.
I’m really sorry because I was hoping I would like it. It seemed so funny, but it’s really poor executed. It’s an ordinary romance, and it’s not so well written (there are a lot of repetition, like A LOT). It was boring at best.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book.
This Is NOT an Office Romance is exactly an office romance with a plot that had nothing special, everything that happened in this book I've seen over and over again.
Something that gave me the ick were the jumps in the timeline, every event in the book was rushed and that leads me to the next point.
The characters were not likeable. The fact that the events were rushed didn't allowed for the grow or change of the characters.
I'm sorry I wanted to like this but I couldn't .
