Megan Taylor's* *The Therapist's Daughter* is a psychological thriller that grips you from the very first page and doesn’t let go. The novel follows Caitlin Shaw as she returns to her childhood village, a place she has avoided for years after the horrifying events that saw her girlfriend, Livy, accused of murdering her own mother, Theresa. The murder, still an unresolved trauma, casts a long shadow over Caitlin's life, leaving her with lingering questions and a sense of dread that intensifies upon her return.
Taylor masterfully builds a tense atmosphere, layering Caitlin’s internal turmoil with the eerie feeling of being watched, a sensation that haunts her as she navigates the ghosts of her past. The plot is driven by Caitlin’s need to uncover the truth—why did Livy, who was once so close to her, commit such a heinous act? And what role did Caitlin’s father, Livy’s therapist, play in the tragedy?
As Caitlin digs deeper into the past, Taylor unravels a complex web of secrets and lies, keeping readers on edge. The characters are intricately developed, with Caitlin’s journey revealing more about her strained relationship with her father and the burden of secrets she carries. The novel expertly explores themes of guilt, betrayal, and the lingering effects of trauma, all while maintaining a pace that keeps you turning the pages.
*The Therapist's Daughter* is not just a tale of suspense; it’s a deep dive into the psyche of its characters, particularly Caitlin, who must confront her own fears and the possibility that the truth might be even darker than she imagined. Taylor’s writing is sharp, atmospheric, and filled with twists that will leave readers questioning everything until the very end.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers that challenge your perceptions and keep you guessing, *The Therapist's Daughter* is a must-read. It’s a story about facing the past, no matter how terrifying it might be, and the consequences of unearthing long-buried truths.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for an advanced copy to review.
Thank you NetGalley for the free ARC! I requested this novel because I really was interested in the description., however, this novel is more a horror story than thriller for me. It deals with the occult and the supernatural and I didn’t realize that from the description. It really wasn’t my preference and I couldn’t continue reading.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me an E-ARC in exchange for an honest review. I love how fast paced this book is. The different points of view kept the story interesting and I enjoyed the aspects of flashbacks involved in the storytelling. I did appreciate the characters but I do feel like Cat was very naïve so much so where I could not tell if her perspective was honest or unreliable. I did guess the killer, it did seem obvious to me but it was still a fun journey getting there. Overall a decent thriller.
This wasn’t a favorite of mine.
The multiple perspectives helped keep the book moving along. There was two different timelines of the characters lives.
This a dark look into different family dynamics.
I'm thinking I wasn't in the best headspace when I got into reading this book.
I DNF'd it, I'm sorry to say-
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this arc!
What a great book!! Such a good thriller/mystery! Perfect writing style and that plot twist!! PERFECT!!
As a teenager, Caitlin Shaw’s girlfriend, Livy, is arrested and committed to a psychiatric hospital for murdering her own mother. In adulthood, Caitlin returns to look after her ailing mother. She is unable to forget the murder and feels as though she is being watched. While there, Caitlin finds out Livy has been released and she is forced to address what happened years ago. Did Livy murder her own mother? How closely entangled is Caitlin’s family with Livy’s?
The Therapist’s Daughter is a character-driven mystery which explores the dark side of family dynamics, trauma and the blurred lines between truth and deception. It is an interesting enough storyline with lots of twists and turns.
Caitlin Shaw goes home for the first time when her mother is ill, and her daughter is away for Christmas.
When she was a teen, her girlfriend was arrested for killing her own mother - the town does not have good memories for her.
Caitlin's late father was a therapist - and treated Livy before the murder.
Phew, very very creepy to say the least. Dark shapes, rooms that seem to close on you, ouija board........moving glass on it shattering. This creeped me out, I do not like anything to do with the supernatural, but could not put the book down.
But I did have a feeling about the ending, and I was right.
For those that like a shiver down the spine - this book is for you.
I will give this 3.5/5, rounded up to 4.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bloodhound Books for the opportunity to read this book.
