I'm a pretty big sucker for a Jo Bartlett novel and although this wasn't my favorite of hers I still found myself easily getting invested in the story and characters. I especially liked that we got to see more of the characters from the previous novels - I love getting to know what happened to characters after I leave their stories. And the author does such a great job of weaving those continuing stories into later books. As for the story here with Wendy and Chloe, I wasn't really sure what to expect solely from the book description but I thought there would be more with them bonding and becoming friends. I completely understood Wendy's feelings that her daughters were abandoning her for Chloe and wished they had at some point realized how their behavior impacted her, but it is clear that they know what an amazing parent she is. This book also has so much going on for Wendy - she's dealing with her ex having a new baby after putting her off from having a third, a new romance that may require her to rethink her view on getting re-married, daughters who have more in common with dad's new girlfriend and wanting to spend all their time with her, body image issues, and becoming the support system for her ex's girlfriend. And yet none of that seems overly dramatic or make you think "how much more can this poor woman handle?" As with all Jo Bartlett books everything is balanced and presented in a way that keeps it in the realm of something that could happen in real life. I also thought the topic of a later-term miscarriage was handled so well and brought about the complexity of losing a child that close to his/her birth. My only complaint is that I'm pretty much over everything with Lucas - he should really take a hint and find a job somewhere very far away.
Jo writers emotional but romantic books that touch on real issues and this none more than in her fourth outing of the Cornish Hospital. Reconnecting with book one heroine Dannii, this is a fast pace moving book which wanted me keep turning the pages. It's an unputdownable book about friendships, kindness, love, hope and loss.
Some scenes were deeply moving and brought me to tears as I fell in love with Chloe, a new character we meet through Wendy's storyline. I loved going back to Port Kara and St. Piran's.
Can't wait for a hopeful book five of what is one of my favourite series.
Jo Bartlett never disappoints! Another great instalment in the Cornish Country Hospital series with teal issued, and a lot of love
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
This was another fabulous book by Jo Bartlett.
We meet new characters as well as catch up with the other characters and read about how their lives are progressing.
The story had some topics which were emotional, but sensitively covered. It was well written, from the beginning you are engrossed, finding it hard to put down.
I highly recommend this book.
In this the latest episode of The Cornish Country Hospital series there are two main story threads, Danni and Charlie who are expecting their first baby and Wendy and Gary. Wendy's ex, Mike, is now engaged to Chloe, who is only slightly older than their two daughters and is pregnant. Of course the previous characters are all there and their stories brought up to date.
This book can be read as a standalone, however you will appreciate it more if you've read the previous books. As usual it is all about love and relationships, but there is also a strong undercurrent of forgiveness. Part of the story covers loss which is very emotional, realistic and is unfortunately part of life. A very warm hearted story set in my favourite part of the world, Cornwall which I'm sure that you'll really enjoy.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
Another fantastic book in the Cornish Country hospital series, it was exciting to meet new characters as well as catch up with the old crowd. It really makes the book flow.
A few , hard hitting emotional stories are handled sensitively and this was definitely a rollercoaster of a story but the book is so well written the reader is drawn in from the start. Highly Recommended
Thanks to Netgalley, Boldwood Books and Jo Bartlett for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review
this is part of a series but can easily be read as a standalone, the Cornish country hospital books are all good.
Another fabulous book from Jo Bartlett that covers so many different topics but the way she writes makes them just flow together. This is the latest instalment in the Cornish Country Hospital series and we get to meet new characters as well as catching up with those who are already established. Wendy Tyler’s marriage ended when she found out her ex Mike had got his much younger new partner Chloe pregnant. Jealousy of the relationship that Chloe has with Wendy’s daughters turns to something more maternal when she finds that Chloe isn’t as strong as she portrays. When Chloe needs support it comes from the unlikely source of Wendy. Alongside this we follow Dani and Charlie’s story as they wait to welcome their new baby into the world. After not having the best relationship with her own mother Dani worries about how she will take to motherhood. I love how everyone is connected and how the story weaves in and out of these connections. Easy to follow, emotional, uplifting and leaving you wanting to know what is going to happen next this is a great read from an author I highly recommend. Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC
Thanks to Netgalley & Boldwood Books for the
E-ARC! So cute & cozy! Loved the writing style & the characters. Definitely will read more from this author.
This was a lovely book, but it does have trigger pints that may affect some people. Wendy has got a new partner since leaving her cheating ex, but he has a younger partner that’s pregnant. Her girls like her and prefer to stay weekends with her instead of their mother. When Chloe (new partner) needs a shoulder to cry on, Wendy is there.
It’s a quick read that is full of emotion and sadness, but it has a happy ending that brings people together. The characters are lovely and I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series. A homely uplifting family 4 star read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.
This is a great series with echoes of Jo Bartlett's Cornish Midwife series and a crossover of characters. You can read these as standalone stories but they are better read in order so that you understand the characters' histories. We return to Dannie and Charlie's story in this novel. They are anticipating the birth of their son and looking forward to their future as a family. Dannie has huge anxiety which she tries to deal with. Mindful of her relationship with her Mother, she is afraid that she may be like her Mother and struggle to maintain a strong maternal bond. However, as the story develops, you can see the differences in Dannie and her Mother. Dannie is a warm, empathic person as opposed to her cold, detached parent.
Life at the Hospital is varied and bust but the strong team in A and E support each other and keep their eye on Dannie who is working so hard. Gwen adds lots of humour, as ever, and it is noticeable that Dannie might be lacking her own family closeness, but has a found family in her many friends. Parallel to Dannie's story, you see Chloe's. She too lacks family support but finds it in a surprising place. There are some upsetting aspects ro Chloe's story which many may find too much. However, life goes on for all the characters and you wonder what will happen next.
In short: Family closeness and friendship conquers all.
This book covers a lot of hard hitting, and emotional topics. It is less a romance, than a look at what good and kind people do when things get tough. The life of this book is based around the hospital and especially the maternity. There are several pregnancies and the worries as well as Jos that they bring are looked at. Broken wedding vows, divorce and finding new love is central and the author looks in depth at the jealousy and emotions that this all brings. Some great, and kind, characters as well as some on the mean side.
This is a standalone book however there are so man characters and each has a back story that it was hard to follow at first.
Lessons in Love at the Cornish Country Hospital by Jo Bartlett is an utterly wonderful book that captures the charm and warmth of the beloved Cornish Country Hospital series. Bartlett's storytelling is uplifting and heartfelt, filled with engaging characters and a beautifully woven plot. The book draws you into the scenic Cornish countryside and the emotional journeys of those who work at the hospital. It's a delightful read for 2024, filled with both love and life lessons, making it a must-read for fans of heartwarming romances.
A nice light read in the fading summer .
I found it an easy read but a heartwarming tale with many interesting characters through the pages
I am always super excited to visit the Cornish Country Hospital to catch up with long lost friends. This is how these books make you feel. Great storylines that capture my interest from page one to the very end.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review. It was an absolute pleasure.
I loved this book. I have read all of the Cornish Midwives books and all of the Cornish Country Hospital books, I feel like I know all of the characters personally.
I don’t think I could have been as compassionate as Wendy was with Chloe.
I couldn’t put this book down and read it while on holiday. It was another of Jo’s books that had me laughing one minute and crying the next!!
I can’t wait for the next instalment in this series and to read what Jo does next.
This is the 4th instalment of this fabulous series
And I couldn’t wait to revisit the Cornish country hospital to see how the story continued to unfold.
We got to catch up with the characters and how their lives were progressing and also to meet some new additions with a particular focus on us finding our more about Wendy’s story. . This was a rollercoaster of a read with lots of emotions and the author as always also brings some sensitive issues to the core and brings them out onto the open.
I am looking forward to the next instalment .
A gentle story peopled with lovely caring human beings and peppered with many reminders of what really matters in life and how many forms love can take. This book tackles infidelity, second marriages and complex relationships. Also, love the canine characters. Despite the sometimes dad themes, ,love triumphs and you will be left with a warm glow and a determination to forgive more and love more.
Love, there are many kinds of love: romantic, friendships, mother and child, self, for someone you should probably hate. And this book features them all. But what resonated most with me was Wendy finding love for herself and the confidence she gains.
There were so many amazing characters, too:
I need a Gwen to teach me her ways she's so charismatic and vibrant and her energy levels? Off the charts, I love her!
Danni and her mom, the indifference her mom showed to Danni and her brother, is so heartbreaking and her fears about motherhood and whether she'll make the same mistakes. I love that Danni felt so real, her fears and insecurities.
I saw myself in so many of the characters in this one, and every storyline moved me.
I absolutely adore this series.
This is my first Jo Bartlett book and it didn’t matter a bit that I hadn’t read the others in the series. I loved it. I shed tears of joy and happiness and once I started I couldn’t put it down. Brilliant book!
