I had neutral level of expectations assuming my love for Scotland to be sufficient in keeping my attention but this book exceeded my expectations.
I am not a big fan of historical fact told plainly, and fortunately, in this thoroughly researched and presented book, I found inspiration for many new stories. As a bonus, it is informative and comprehensive.
This is a great coffee table book covering the history of Scotland from prehistoric times to the present day. It touches on every major event throughout the country's history and is filled with photos that illustrate that history. It's a nice introduction to Scotland and a good book to flip through.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for allowing me to read and review this
This book gives you not only the history of Scottish society, and politics, but also of it's geographical history. I did not know much of Scotland before reading this book., other than knowing the name Robert the Bruce. This book is very easy to read, and it doesn't linger on one part of Scottish history too long. It has 180 photographs that help you visualize not only the Scottish landscape, but the Scottish past.
It will take you from the Pre-Historic Orkney period with the Mesolithic nomad tribes, through the Roman Invasion, through the Jacobite Era, all the way up to modern day Scotland.
A very easy to read book. More akin to a coffee table book. I see that as a big positive. So this should appeal to anyone who loves history, Scotland, and/or coffee table books.
