The reckoning by Kerry Wilkinson is the first book in The Silver Blackthorn Trilogy. It tells the story of Silver (yes Silver) a young woman who has to take a coming of age test which will sort her into a social grouping. If you have ventured into the world of YA dystopian fiction before then this synopsis will sound familiar. it is undeniable that Reckoning has a lot in common with other books in the genre (most glaringly The Hunger Games and Divergent). whether this is because the author 'borrowed' from other books or because there is such a saturation of dystopian YA books I don't know. I hope it is the later.
Despite the similarities to other books I did find Reckoning to be enjoyable, It was an easy read that grabbed my attention enough to keep me turning the pages. The action scenes were dynamic and exciting. There was enough here in the plot and writing to interest me. There were a few pacing issues. A few moments where Kerry Wilkinson lost her stride a little but this was mostly an enjoyable read.
Silver wasn't the easiest character to like. The problem when you have a main character who doesn't feel is that she is hard to relate too and understand. Her strength and fiery nature tuned out any softer side that may have endeared her more to the reader.
This book ends with a bang big enough to guarantee most readers are going to want to pick up the second book in the series. If you like big action dystopian young adult fiction then I see no reason why this book shouldn't be for you.
