Lady Olivia MacBain has inherited her family’s 15th century castle called Drumblair Castle in Scotland. Before her mother passed away, she saw how badly her son, Kerr, had fallen into drinking and gambling which is why Olivia received the inheritance. When Kerr found out he had been livid and left the home. Some time later, he has returned a broken man, begging for forgiveness. Skeptical of him, Olivia agrees to give him a chance. Kerr brings a dog with him called Sir Lancelot who he says has helped him. They are inseparable. Olivia insists that he join Alcoholics Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous and he agrees. Soon, he gets a job and while attending meetings, he is keeping his promise of reform.
Olivia has improved the castle immensely. She is in love with Brodie, son of the groundskeeper. They have been a couple for a while now and she is hoping they will wed. Mirren is her long-time housekeeper and married to Dougie. Olivia now has a cafe for tourists who are now allowed to take walks on the grounds and some tours of the castle are offered. She has turned things around and made it all profitable. When Brodie plans a lovely marriage proposal, Olivia is thrilled and they plan a wedding in a few months.
I have followed this family story for several books now and have loved each of them. They are warm with real characters and everyone with the same problems as all of us. We find real friends who care for one another and help each other. Such a lovely story of second chances and growth in life. Enjoy!

I absolutely LOVE this stunning book and stunning series and am absolutely landed that it is part of a series that I can not only look forward to more books to read when they come out but can go back to the first book 'Coming Home To The Highlands' while I am waiting for new ones to come out whether in this series or another of Lisa's books it does not matter as even if they are half as good as this stunner they are guaranteed to be absolutely gorgeous!!! Lisa's absolutely stunning evocative writing skills ensures the readers are absolutely sucked into the stunning storyline with the atmosphere, emotions and characters coming to life all around them. Lisa ensure the reader hears the Scottish twang in the characters voices, feel the fresh Highland air around them and see the beautiful surroundings. Our main characters are Lady Olivia MacBain who has inherited the castle, Olivia's partner Brodie, Olivia's employees and friends Mirren and Dougie, Olivia's best friend Bella and her Gran Isla and Olivia's brother Kerr MacBain who would have inherited the castle if it hadn't been for his life choices.
In this "episode" of 'The Highlands' Kerr returns to Drumblair Castle claiming he has turned his life around and is seeking forgiveness for his past. I became so invested in this book and series that it actually felt like going on a holiday and I absolutely dreaded coming to the end again where I had to unpack my suitcase and get back to reality. It was an absolutely compelling and addictive heart lifting read that kept me turning the pages until late at night. I loved discovering the pasts and histories of the characters and I was absolutely swept away in the story line. The characters and locations came to life around me and I cannot wait to return in the next and previous book in this stunning series that I have very quickly fallen in love with. It has everything you could ask for to lose yourself for several hours. I just could not put it down so make sure you clear your schedules!!!! This book and this series would make a beautiful movie!! I haven't been to Scotland for a long time but my son keeps asking to go and this book has tempted me even more. This book is an absolutely gorgeous, cute and addictive addition in what promises to be an absolutely stunning series!!
Do not turn a single page of this book until you have cleared your schedules and when you do get ready to go on a stunning holiday you will not want to leave!!
Although this is the third book in this stunning series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without reading any of the previous books first. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I very quickly became completely invested in the characters, along with the storyline, who were all absolutely fantastic with their own individual personalities and quirks. They all started feeling like friends so quickly and I cannot wait to meet some of them along with new characters in the previous and future books in what promises to be a stunning series if this gorgeous book is anything to go by!!. I felt like I was leaving amazing people and friends and feel quite sad about that! Each of the characters have rich personalities and they will all stay with me for a long time. Lisa's fantastic evocative writing skills ensure each and every one of them come to life in front of your eyes while you go through all their emotions with them. i absolutely adored Olivia, Brodie, Bella and Isla. However, although Olivia is our main protagonist I must admit that my favourite character just HAS to be the absolutely fabulous Granny Isla!!!! She reminded me of my own Gran so much and although my Gran is sadly no longer with me it brought so many happy memories of her back while I was reading this. She made me laugh out loud on so many occasions I lost count!!! I will prewarn you not to drink tea, or any liquids, while Granny Isla is about!! Nobody thought to warn me and I ended up spitting my tea out on a couple of occasions!!! There were several other characters that I loved and just a couple I was not a fan of at all but we cant like everyone and it would be boring if we did!! The fact that Lisa clearly cares about her characters absolutely shines through the pages with the fact that they are so well developed, realistic and every character has a part. I just absolutely adored getting to meet them and I'm looking forward to meeting them all over again in the first and future books in this fantastic series. An absolutely fantastic, unique and memorable group of amazing characters that i wont forget anytime soon!!
Congratulations Lisa on yet another absolutely gorgeous success!!! I'm definitely looking forward to my next holiday to the Scottish Highlands in your next book!!! This is exactly why you are in my favourite author club and here is to your next success 🥂 !!!
Overall a perfect, stunning, page turning beach or fireplace escapism, with a great gang of characters that will sweep you away to the Scottish Highlands from the very first page to the end by the extremely talented Lisa Hobman!!

A Highland Family Affair is the third book in The Highlands series by Lisa Hobman.
Lady Olivia inherits Drumblair Castle, leaving her brother Kerr bitter, vengeful, and full of spite. After his latest attempt to sabotage Olivia's plans to continue Drumblair Castle's legacy, he disappears. He left behind a damaged relationship with Olivia, and the chaos he caused, in his wake.
When Kerr returns suddenly, disheveled, soaked to the bone, and a mess, Olivia is torn. She knows she can't turn Kerr away, but his appearance back at Drumblair Castle is met with skepticism, apprehension, and distrust. He claims to be sorry and hitting rock bottom opened his eyes, but Oliva isn't so sure.
I enjoyed the author's writing style, the story, and how everything came together. I was pulled into the story from the beginning and kept thoroughly engaged. The characters are well-written, 3-dimensional, and complex. The author wove a masterpiece together, filled with romance, love, anxious moments, tenderness, frustration, and disbelief. I was captivated by this wonderful story.
A huge thank you to netgalley, the publishers & of course Lisa Hobman for an advanced copy of this book for my review. Book number 3 in the series, yes it can be read as a standalone but I heartily recommend reading the others as they are fabulous books. This is a lovely heartwarming tenderly written story about families, friendships new & old, love, loss & loyalty. As always, granny Isla and her funny misquotes add that extra humour. A page turner that I definitely recommend.
A Highland Family Affair by Lisa Hobman is a heartwarming novel set at Drumblair Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Lady Olivia MacBain deals with the fallout from her brother Kerr’s past mistakes, while hoping her childhood love, Brodie, will propose. Kerr’s sudden return, claiming he has changed, adds tension, though he starts building a bond with a teenager named Will. The story focuses on Olivia’s relationships, offering a sweet, character-driven narrative with touches of humor, especially from the quirky Isla. Overall, it’s a light and enjoyable read, perfect for fans of family and romance-driven stories.
After inheriting Drumblair Castle ahead of her older brother Kerr, Lady Olivia MacBain has been compelled to create a new life for herself, far from New York and her dream of a fashion career. She worries that Kerr's resentment has irreparably damaged their relationship, and she is still dealing with the chaos he caused before his disappearance. Kerr's sudden return and apparent change of heart are met with skepticism. He seeks forgiveness and aims to repair the relationships he once destroyed, but questions linger about his sincerity—is it genuine, or merely an illusion? As her friends find their own paths, Olivia waits for her childhood love, Brodie, to propose, hoping for her own fairy-tale ending.
I've enjoyed most of Hobman's books, drawn to the settings and story development. I was delighted to find connections to a previous series set in Skye. It's a heartwarming series with a romantic thread woven through the Scottish Highlands. The narrative offers many poignant moments. Yet, it's Isla's endearing misuse of words that never fails to amuse me. Eagerly, I anticipate the next book to discover what the future holds for Olivia and Brodie. With thanks to the publisher Boldwood Books for an arc in exchange for a review.
This 3rd book in the series almost felt like a warm hug. I really enjoyed the story and how the characters that we know from the previous books developed and also find new characteristics in the process. I don’t want to spoil too much, but especially Kerr’s development will warm your heart and Brodie’s love for Olivia is great! Kerr shows so much growth compared to his role in the previous books. He was a real pain then and now became a character that one can really like. The book again is written from Olivia's perspective and she is my favourite in this series. I love that she got more spotlight in this 3rd book again compared to book 2 being from Bella's perspective. Brodie gets an extra mention here! He is such a thoughtful and wonderful character! I loved what he did for Olivia. All in all I loved how heartwarming and emotional the story is in the best ways! I really hope this is not the last book and we get to know more about Dumblair Castle and its inhabitants in a book 4!
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this heartwarming book.
The story is about Kerr, Olivia’s brother. He’s back, and informs Olivia that he wants to change his way of living and for her to forgive him for his past mistakes.
But, after what he did before leaving, can Kerr be trusted?
It was lovely to see how the characters got along with each other. Thinking that you know how each characters story will proceed, the ending to it wasn’t obvious.
I loved the setting and the story kept you turning the pages.
I highly recommend this book.
Delightful story in a beautiful setting, really enjoyable series with great characters believable plots well written. Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy
Lisa Hobman's 'A Highland Family Affair' is a delight from start to finish. I loved going to the Scottish Highlands and all the intricacies of the characters and storyline. I'm extremely hopeful that with the ending there will be more. I highly recommend this entire series. It is a joy!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This is such a lovely heartwarming feel good read. This is the latest in the Scottish Highland series and focuses mainly on the return of Lady Olivia’s brother Kerr. He says that he wants to turn his life around and seeks forgiveness for all his past wrongdoings. However can he be trusted and can a leopard really change their spots? I loved how the characters all interacted with each other and how although I could try and guess, the outcomes of different situations weren’t always obvious. This has some fabulous scenery, brilliant characters and a very engaging storyline. There are some great moments that look at relationships, friendships and romance but forgiveness and moving on is also explored. Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC.
Romance with focus on family & friendship🏞🏰👰
A Highland Family Affair was a sweet addition to Lisa Hobman's series about the folks living and working at Drumblair Castle in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness. Olivia, chateleine of the castle, is the main character, but she shares the spotlight with Brodie, the man she's loved since a girl, her gal pals, the castle's long-time workers Mirren and Dougie, and her reprobate brother Kerr who was cut out of inheriting the castle due to his profligate ways and returns claiming he wants to reshape his life. Kerr's transformation and budding relationship with teenage Will were a good subplot.
Other than one exciting action episode, the story struck me as fairly even keel and good but not gripping with good times and good things in store for Olivia and company. There's a brief appearance from a few characters from Hobman's series set on Skye when Olivia and Brodie visit Skye to see BFF Bella.
The light, humorous touch comes with Bella's grandmother Isla who is a champion of malapropism. Her comments always bring a chuckle.
Overall, a nice relaxing read. Thanks to Boldwood Books for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
I’m loving this series, Olivia and Brodies story continued as they plan for their wedding, with a brilliant cast of supporting characters.
Kerr, Olivia’s no good brother turns up again in this book. Can a leopard change its spots? Read the book and find out !
Engaging storyline and the reader becomes invested in the book
Highly Recommended, especially if you’ve read the previous books
Thank you to Netgalley, Lisa Hobman and Boldwood Books for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review
A lovely read. Very touching.
I love that Brodie and Liv get their happy ever after and all the twists and turns really helped to keep me engaged. The plot, I felt was a little slow until the last few chapters, but this is part of a series and it does give great depth to the characters and the location. No plot or decryption is wasted as it’s all used as another layer for a character that is still being explored- within the book, and maybe in the next book.
I was happy to see Kerr return and to see him working really hard to turn himself around, the plot twists for his character where huge and he dealt with everything with such grace and composure, I can’t help but think his story isn’t quite finished yet and I’ll be looking out for the next book!
A lovely Christmas read, that gives you not one but two Christmas as the timeline is over a year.
Loved it! I’ve read all three in the series now and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Really hope Lisa will be writing a number four. I’ve really enjoyed the varied locations in the series but particularly the Highlands settings . Interesting, but not always likeable characters, wonderful storylines and very well written. Highly recommended.
Olivia inherits a castle from her brother in the Scottish Highlands. she has to relocate from new York. sweet story.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book; I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I'm a sucker for books set in Scotland in general, so this was an obvious choice for me. I really liked the descriptions of the settings, and the characters were particularly delightful. One of the conflicts occurring in the book involves reconciliation with a sibling who has done one wrong.
It's not the fastest moving plot, but who says it has to be? It was a fairly quick read and ticked all the boxes for me.
Such a hilarious read….lancey and Kerr were so heartbreaking and I loved how compassionate kerr’s sister was …perfect read!
I read this book as a standalone, however it is part of a trilogy. Set in Scottish Highlands, this story following Clan MacBain, who hail from Drumblair Castle, where sister Olivia still lives with her partner.
Her brother Kerr returns with seemingly good intentions - but does he have an ulterior motive?
I thoroughly enjoyed this feel good romance story. I found it to be an incredibly easy read, with lots of funny and heartwarming moments, as well as the topic of self forgiveness and family reconciliation.
Such a cute love story in the coolest setting. The details and contemporary storyline is adorable. Cover is great as well
