🩷🖤Visions of Darkness🖤🩷
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Author: A.L. Jackson

Wow! This is my first A.L. Jackson read and it was incredible! This is truly unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

Aria and Pax fight a war that the human race doesn’t even know exists. Each night instead of descending into dreamland, they descend into a world where the most depraved thoughts are born and planted like seeds into the minds of those susceptible to darkness.

When Aria discovers, and uses, powers very few of her kind have ever had, she becomes the target for the most heinous creature imaginable. They see her as a threat that must be eliminated. Aria and Pax must figure out how to defeat the monster that hunts her before it’s too late.

Visions of Darkness by A.L. Jackson has a fast paced story line with an interesting idea of two parallel worlds. It's another version of soulmate that crosses time, space and dimensions. Aria and Pax found each other in dreams where they were fighting against the evil, corrupting the souls all over the world. But the evil starts hunting Aria too and Pax cannot stay behind without protecting her. The real and the alternate world clash with grave consequences but they manage to come out as champions.

Aria's family thinks she is self harming because she wakes up with the burns and scars. But she actually gets transported to Tearsith, when people like her called Lavens fight against Kruens in a space called Faydor. Pax is her Nol. He is supposed to fight with her and protect her but only in Tearsith. The elderly master always warned them that their feelings cannot cross the limit. But Aria has been put in a psychiatry facility again and she is being hunted by the Ghorl, a severe version of Kruen.

My main issue with this book is the lack of the fantasy part. Most of the story is set in contemporary world. Even the fighting of the evil force happens here. We just see glimpses of Tearsith. No details. No character building. No specifications. It didn't even feel fantasy. Now if I remove the part, the story is really amazing. Pax and Aria's connection is electric. They bring a lot of angst here. A.L. Jackson has a very poetic style and she excels here too. Aria is just 18 Years but she is mature beyond her age. She has a big compassionate heart and she won't hesitate to help others even when it endangers her. Pax is so protective of her. His presence is really enigmatic on the page. Their chemistry is the asset of this story.

This book was wildly different from my usual reads cause at first I was a bit confused at which world i was in lol (I am sometimes a little slow) but when I really caught it I enjoyed it because here you have our two main characters who are in the real world are forbidden to be together but yet somehow in like a dream world called Faydor they both also exist and can be together while fighting a war that Aria was chosen for in which to try to keep the darkness of the Kruen spilling over into the real world. Things slowly collide in both worlds. As the things progress Aria & Pax do as well with their feelings and Arias powers. BUT will them being together destroy them.
The writing and scene setting were good that I felt like I was in the book so if enjoy fantasy you'll maybe want to check this one out. Get read for book 2

Aria Rialta is living the dream—or rather, two nightmares. By day, she’s navigating a life that’s slowly being invaded by hallucinations. By night, she’s battling monsters in a realm where her soulmate touch literally kills. (Talk about complicated relationships!)

Enter Pax, her broody, lethal soulmate with a fatal touch and an undeniable pull. Together, they’re fighting Kruen demons, dodging death, and wrestling with forbidden chemistry so hot it might just burn down the entire nightmare world of Faydor.

The stakes? Oh, just reality as we know it. No big deal.

With a plot that straddles reality and fantasy like a tightrope act and a romance so electric it could fry circuits, this book delivers a fast-paced ride full of danger, longing, and just one more chapter moments. If you’re into soulmate angst, monster-fighting duos, and unraveling dark forces, this book is your ticket to a wild, otherworldly escape.

I was so excited when I found out AL Jackson was going to release a fantasy story. This was unlike any I have ever read. The world she came up with still has my mind boggled after finishing it. Seeing the evils of the world like this was unique and honestly sinister. You could feel the creep vibe that Aria would get. Her love with Pax was so great. Pax is the epitome of burn the world down for her. It starts off a little slow. Mostly so you can understand this new take on fantasy. But boy when it starts flowing you get sucked in.

DNF at 49%, this just wasn't for me. The premise of the story was interesting but it just took too long to get to the point. There just wasn't much going on for the first 45% of the book, very little plot progression and very minimal worldbuilding.

Unfortunately, this landed in my DNF pile at 42%. I thought the premise was really interesting and I would love it! But after the 20% mark it felt a bit repetitive and forced. The beginning was really good, I was drawn into Aria's life and connected with her. I tried to stick through it and finish the book because I'm not a fan of dnf-ing. I'm sure there will be many who love and enjoy Visions of Darkness but it just wasn't for me.

I'm a total A.L. Jackson fangirl. I'll read anything she writes, no questions asked. And when I heard she was a fantasy romance I was SOLD. I've have never read any fantasy books, but Jackson's name on the cover was all the convincing I needed.

Initially, I found it a bit challenging to get into the story. However, once I did, the fantasy world and waking world captivated me. Her vivid descriptions brought the realms to life, transporting me directly into the two worlds.

The story revolves around Pax and Aria, soulmates separated by two worlds. At night, they fight evil but their paths are forbidden in the waking world. When Pax finds himself pulled into Aria's reality, his sole mission becomes protecting her from evil. I don't want to give anything away because you really need to experience for yourself.

This book serves as the perfect entry point for those new to the fantasy genre. With its unique and action packed plot, well-developed characters, and the connection between Aria and Pax, it will leave you eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.

Thank you to A.L. Jackson, NetGalley and Valentine PR for the ARC of this book. I voluntarily read it and gave an honest review.

What a ride! Visions of Darkness by A.L. Jackson was a dark, mystical, and alluring Romantasy that completely enraptured my heart from start to finish. Aria and Pax’s journey to HEA was full of heartwrenching twists and dreamy turns. The ethereal Tearsith world Jackson created had me mesmerized, in a trance, and falling so hard for this couple.

Victoria Mei and Teddy Hamilton perform this audiobook in dual narration and are pure magic together in this audiobook. Victoria’s light, lively tone captured Aria’s vulnerabilities, determination, and passion, for her Laven gifts, not to mention her undeniable magnetism towards Pax. Teddy’s warm mellow voice enveloped all of Pax’s protective and possessive qualities he cherished for Aria that was fate and meant to be. Both narrators develop a slow-burning tension between Aria and Pax that erupts into a fiery inferno of want and need.

Overall, I LOVED this book. If you are a fan of a Romantasy adventure with a blonde-haired warrior, a raven-haired heroine coming into her power, a mystical realm in your dreams, fighting demons, running away, seeking truths, finding your soulmate, discovering your magical history, slow-burn steam, protecting your family, and HEA that will leave your heart content but yearning for more, then you will love Aria and Pax’s story. I am looking forward to more in this Darkness world from A.L. Jackson.

Despite an interesting premise, I just couldn't get into this book. It's definitely a younger adult book, but it felt too childish to me and I can't tell you exactly why. I also couldn't really stand Aria's character. Bleeding hearts are always one of my least favorite types of characters. Pax was great in some aspects, like his violent tendencies and dark aura. But I hated how he held himself back so much in regards to how badly he wanted Aria because he thought she was too pure or perfect for him. It got annoying.

Ever since they were children, Pax and Aria have gone to a different world when they sleep in the real world. There they are told of their important role in the world, which is to destroy these creatures that feed on people doing bad things and who make them do worse things by whispering poisonous thoughts into their heads. Pax and Aria are a bonded pair that are more powerful together. But they are also forbidden to fall in love with each other and even more forbidden to meet in the waking world. But these two have been in love with each other for as long as they can remember. And when Pax senses Aria's desperate need for his help, nothing will keep him away from her.

I think Aria was four years younger than Pax, and boy can you tell. This girl still has her rose colored glasses on despite all that she has seen and gone thru. And that's because of the vastly different childhoods they had. While Pax found himself having to run away from his parents at a young age, Aria still had a loving home and parents who cared. They woefully misunderstood her, but they cared. The problem with what these two do while they're sleeping is that any wounds they get in that world carry over to this world, so Aria's parents think she is hurting herself. And their idea of helping is locking her away in a psych ward. And it's there that Aria finds out that she can use her powers in the waking world as well. Something unheard of and which paints the biggest target ever on her back.

And that's why Pax says damn the rules and rushes to break her out. Together they flee, stopping every so often to try and do some research on what they are and what Aria can do. But they can never really stop because the ones hunting Aria are always only half a step behind them. If that. They're forced to stop running when Aria's family is more or less taken hostage, and of course because Aria is such an emotional person, she has to rush to save them. The final "battle" at the end wasn't exactly bad, but it was more kind of....that's it? I will say that the best part was when Aria's mother is confronted with Pax in the flesh after years of berating Aria that he wasn't real.

So yeah. I liked the idea of the two separate worlds bleeding into each other the way they do here and even having select people chosen to fight the baddies was okay (even if their power was pretty much just shooting light out of their hands *so eye rolly*). But overall, I'm thinking that just how it was written fell flat for me. So I'm not going to be continuing this series.

Visions of Darkness
By A. L. Jackson

I lterally went into this book with a open mind and I can say it got bombarded and I loved every minute of it!

I am not a romantasy reader, or a paranormal reader and I’m not sure where Visions of Darkeness falls genre wise but from the prequel to the last words in this book I was spell bound! I hoped that when I slept my dream began in Tearsith and I to was part of the Laven.

There is the dream world, where Aria and Pax are Laven, where Pax is Aria’s Nol. The one who stands by her side, where together they are a force and when together could over come the wicked ones, the Kruen who rule over Faydor. During the day though they are alone and open, by themselves where it is possible to Kruen to find them and potentially end them.

Now if that doesn’t draw you in nothing can. Vision of Darkness is the story about both Aria, about to turn eighteen and Pax who is older. One of them is in danger and their story is something that holds readers captive.

You learn that this story is so much more than what the prologue tells you. You watch as they fight both in their dreams and awake and it isn’t long before you are telling them to watch out and no don’t go there and each win is worth celebrating but a loss could change everything.

I am an avid reader of this author so when I found out about this new writing journey, I was there and I am so glad I was able to see how she has grown.

If you are looking for something to shake up your reading world grab Visions of Darkness and take this journey with Aria and Pax because it is just beginning!

Is there anything, A.L. Jackson can't write??! As a huge fan of her contemporary romances, I was beyond excited to learn that she was trying her hand at fantasty romance. And let me tell you, this book does not disappoint.

Visions of Darkness is intriguing and a truly fresh take at Fantasy Romance. I couldn't help but be fascinated by the characters, storyline, and world building. I especially loved the forbidden romance aspect. Fair warning, Pax and Aria are going to steal your heart. And I, for one, couldn't wait to see how their story would unfold.

Visions of Darkness is the first book in the Darkness series, and after that cliffhanger ending, I certainly can't wait to find out what will happen next. If you're looking for a well written and unique fantasy romance with no shortage of action and intrigue, you won't want to miss this all-new story from A.L. Jackson.

Thank you to Valentine PR and NetGalley for the E-ARC of this book!

I give this book between a 3.75-4 stars overall. I found the premise of the novel super interesting and had a lot of potential to be something great.

The pacing in this book was done well and I didn’t feel like the book dragged at any point during the story which was really well done. I also found the characters to be interesting and easy to like/connect with. The world building was well done (Tearsith) and I really enjoyed the fantastical elements that made this story into a fantasy world.

Onto the things I didn’t love. Firstly, our main character Aria is freshly 18 (literally starts the book at 17) and is in love with a full adult man who is also into her (for years btw) which gave me a little bit of the ick. He was hot tho for a mmc but like also maybe don’t make him 22? Secondly, even though it was an adult novel it read very YA including the intimate scenes which felt weird to read (good for them though). Lastly, I feel like this book could’ve very easily been a standalone. Will I read book 2 when it comes out? Probably. But I liked how it ended before the final chapter.

I definitely would recommend this book to others if they’re looking for an urban fantasy with good pacing, high stakes, and a little bit of adventure.

A.L. Jackson's "Visions in Darkness" is a captivating Romantasy debut that seamlessly blends the real world with a fantasy realm. Aria and Pax live separate lives in the US during the day, but their realities converge at night when they enter this alternate world, where they were chosen to be each other’s Nol (Soulmate). As they sleep, they work together to fight the sinister Kruen, who feed on human sins and chaos.

I was swept away by Jackson's masterful world-building, effortlessly navigating between the real world and the mystical realm of Faydor. The concept of Aria and Pax experiencing their dark, magical adventures only in their dreams added a unique layer to the story.

Their slow-burn romance was intense and angsty, with a palpable desire between them. As they navigated the rules of their kind and confronted the dangers threatening Aria's life, I found myself eagerly anticipating their inevitable union.

The cliffhanger ending has left me eager for the next installment. I highly recommend "Visions in Darkness" to romance enthusiasts open to a touch of fantasy. While high fantasy fans might be hesitant due to the blend of genres, I found the balance to be perfect.

A.L. Jackson has once again proven why she's a favorite author of mine, and I'm excited to explore more of her Romantasy world.

This was my first book from this author and while I did enjoy parts of it others really didn't work for me. There was way too much explaining what was happening when the author had already showed us what was happening. I liked the urban setting but wish the fantasy world had been developed more. And I also wish the romance had more depth. Too much relied on the fact that they were mates and this is one area I wish we had been shown more than told.

*4.5

I think this is the authors first fantasy and it was good. I still don't fully understand the world but I imagine more understanding will come in the next book. I just love a chosen one in fantasy. Aria is so special and I love that Pax will do anything to protect her.

I received an arc from valentine pr.

I love that Visions of Darkness is a romantasy based in the real world. Aria is pulled into a world called Tearsith & Faydor the she falls asleep. Her soulmate, Pax, in that world. Because their souls are abound, they are stronger together. This has such an urban fantasy feeling to it. Be aware that in the human world, the story is told through first person POV, and when Aria is in other world fighting demons called the Kruen. Pax was protective of Aria, who was a well written heroine. I enjoyed the plot, the world that AL Jackson created, and the romance. I did not appreciate the cliffhanger, but that is a me thing since I hate them to begin with. Now I have to wait for the next book.

Thank you to AL Jackson and Valentine PR for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A.L. Jackson has stepped into romantasy and I could not be happier! Visions of Darkness has such a fun and unique premise that I was hooked immediately.

Aria and Pax have never met in person, but every night when they close their eyes they find themselves in Tearsith fighting the evil forces only they can see. While they both live in the real world, they are forbidden to ever meet... that is, until Aria's safety is at risk and Pax has no choice but to find her.

I could not get enough of this book. Aria and Pax griped me from page one and I did not want to put this story down. I loved the forbidden nature of their love story and the journey they went on to finding each other. Add in the beautiful lyrical way ALJ tells their story, and the plot builds on itself as you and the characters learn more about each other, the creatures they are fighting and their plot to hurt those they love.

Aria and Pax are the definition of fated mates. The love they have for each other could easily be felt and I ate it up like catnip. The way Pax was focused solely on protecting and cherishing Aria was perfect and I love how Aria provided the final push that had Pax succumbing to their chemistry.

Visions ends on a cliffhanger and I am excited to see where the rest of the story goes. I need more of Aria and Pax!

Visions of Darkness is a unique read that is great for readers who enjoy a romance-focused book set in a fantasy world.

🖤 eARC review 🖤
Release date: January 7, 2025

What to expect:
🖤 Dark fantasy romance
🖤 1st & 3rd person, dual POV
🖤 Forbidden romance
🖤 Modern day
🖤 Chosen one
🖤 One bed
🖤 Slow burn

Visions of Darkness follows two soulmates, Aria and Pax—by day they are living their separate, "normal" lives in the human world and by night they are transported into a nightmare world to fight a magical war at each other's sides. These demons, called Kruen, plague the minds of vulnerable humans and only gifted ones like Aria and Pax can destroy them. This nightmare world begins to seep into Aria's waking world when she begins hallucinating and her powers begin to grow. Pax must decide if he'll do the forbidden to save his soulmate—join her in the real world.

The second half of this book is ultimately what bought me into the story—I enjoyed the forbidden, slow burn romance between Aria and Pax. I like the ways in which their lives mirrored each other, and their actions felt believable for characters of their age (Aria is 18, Pax is 22).

This book is A.L. Jackson's romantasy debut (she is a well-known contemporary romance writer), so with any debut there comes challenges. The first half of this book, especially the world building and pacing, were hard to follow. Once I felt "settled" into the world (~50% in), I felt I could enjoy the story because I had "bought into" the relationship between Aria and Pax. If you don't connect with the romance in this story, you will likely struggle with this read if you focus too heavily on the fantasy aspects.

I love when a cliffhanger gets you excited for the next book, so I am looking forward to seeing how A.L. Jackson continues this story!

A sincere thank you to A.L. Jackson for this eARC ahead of its release.

And I whispered, “I won’t. You are what my heart knows.” 🖤

This is my second time reading A.L. Jackson, and I can already say it won’t be the last. This book immediately locked me in and I couldn’t manage to put it down. It breaks your heart, and then heals it. Fated mates? Check. Morally grey male main character? Check. Touch her and die? Check. It checks every box down to fated mates. It’s captivating, and poetically beautiful. I cannot wait to see more romantasy from A.L. Jackson and what’s to come next following Visions of Darkness! 🖤 I absolutely loved reading Aria and Pax’s story.
