This book takes us on another journey with the absolute baddie, Hollie Turner. We get a glimpse into Hollie's past and the incident that steered her towards her career with the police. Jumping between 1999 and present day an unforgettable, heartbreaking, thrilling, suspenseful story unfolds. It's good, and I mean REALLY good.
Mr. Teague has quickly become one of my favourite authors. His characters have depth, settings are detailed, storylines are unmatched and his writing style is perfection. Looking forward to seeing where Hollie and the team end up next!
I really wanted to like this book. Maybe I would have liked it more had I read the other books in the series. It’s a very slow burn, not exciting at all, no real thrills for me and the changing of names gets really confusing.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This book had a great plot with intriguing characters. I’ll definitely be looking out for more from this author.
Her Final Secret by Paul J Teague
When the body of a retired police superintendent is found murdered at Hull Fair, Detective Hollie Turner is thrust into a case that will force her to confront her own painful history. Twenty-five years ago, Hollie's university friend Moira vanished without a trace at the very same fairground. Now, as she investigates the superintendent's death, long-buried secrets from that fateful night begin to surface.
A very enjoyable read. Great character in DI Hollie Turner and I enjoy how she manages to get under the skin of those she is chasing . This outing also have us a good insight to the life of her away from her job.
Have enjoyed the Hollie Turner series and this book just follows on nicely. Great characters. Love the writing style. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing. Everything you need in a thriller. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
It was a good book. I read it all in a day. I feel like it could have had a little more detail. I did like the back and forth with the past and present. It helps with the back story of the characters and also helps figure out the murders. The past is always their to haunt us. People don't always get to understand the past. In this case she gets answers to her haunting past. .
1I did enjoy this very much.
This is the story of police detective Holly who was in search of her friend Moira who had disappeared 25 years prior. Growing up, Moira had been in a care home where unthinkable things had occurred. She and her friend Simon, along with countless others had been sexually abused. A reporter had done a story for the newspaper about said abuses. Moira and Simon had made a cassette tape disclosing all that had occurred and they were going to deliver it to the reporter. Simon had the tape and was on his way to deliver it but he was accosted. The same night, Moira and Holly went to the fair and it was from that fair that Moira disappeared. She had seen a man with red hair that she recognized and was following him and Holly was following her but she lost them. It was Moira's disappearance that convinced Holly to become a police officer.
I read this book to the end because I wanted to find out what happened to Moira, but I wasn't impressed with it. It moved slowly and the story in its entirety was unremarkable. It was unthrilling and there was no suspense. All in all, I found it to be a bit of a bore. The only thing that was redeeming was when the truth came out. I gave this book two stars.
Detective Hollie Turner is forced to face her painful and twisted past when the body of a retired police superintendent is found murdered at Hull Fair. Twenty years ago, while Hollie was spending a fun evening at the fair with her friend Moira, tragedy occurred when Moira suddenly disappeared. She was never found, and after so many years, the investigation into the superintendent’s death brings back painful memories of that fateful night.
When Hollie’s investigation leads her to the reported abuse allegations that occurred at the local children's home and the death of a former care worker who had worked at the home, she soon finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and abuse of the children that had occurred over the years at the home. Moira had been a resident of the home. Hollie desperately begins her search to find out what happened to her friend. Was she a victim of child abuse, or was she alive and hiding somewhere?
Hollie Turner is back and looking in to a case very close to home, over 20 years ago her friend disappeared at the fair and now there is a dead body at the same fair. What is the connection and is it related to Moiras disapearance.
A fast paced read which I raced through.
i can't wait for the next one
5 stars
Thanks to net galley and the publishers for this arc.
Hollie is a great character with a past that has driven her career explained in this, the 5th book of the series.
The setting of Hull fair was so well described that the noise and lights jump out of the page at you and the pace for both the bodies piling up and the investigation simultaneously solving a cold case as well as the current one is as whirlwind as some of the fairground rides!
An excellent plot, well executed with great characters...I hope Hollie stays on active service for many more books to come.
When a retired Police Superintendent's body is found in the ghost train at Hull Fairground Detective Hollie Turner is thrust back into her past as it brings back memories of her best friend Moira going missing.
As secrets emerge, historical allegations are brought to the foreground detailing cohersive and abusive behaviour by men in a position of trust.
This was a fast paced novel, book 5 in the series but able to be read as a standalone. I raced through it
Many thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for the opportunity to read this advanced copy, my opinions are my own and not expected
I will post this review on bookmory, storygraph abd Goodreads now and on Amazon on publication day
I have not read the previous 4.books in the series but in my opinion this can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed the polit and the characters and want to go back and get the previous 4 books in the series. thanks Storm Publishing for extending my ever expanding TBR
Thank you for the opportunity to review
The plot centers around Moira, a missing girl, and her friend who has since become a detective. Although it's a cold case, recent deaths connected to Moira's disappearance reignite interest and urgency.
This was my first experience with Teague's writing, and I was impressed by his storytelling skills, especially how he navigated between different time periods. Overall, the book was a solid read—while it felt somewhat middle of the road in terms of excitement, it was consistently engaging and well-executed.
Hollie 's friend disappeared at a fair, while they where at university. Now 25 years later Hollie is a police officer and his called to the same fair to deal with a crime.
I really liked this book despite working out some of the plot and those involved well before the end. The book dealt with some sensitive issues, the pace of which was just right for me.
This series is AMAZING. It was the perfect combination of mystery and thriller and left me wanting more until it was over! It was so fast paced and I never would have guessed the twists!
I loved the last three books, so I was extremely excited when I saw book 4 in this series had been released. Detective Holly Turner finds her new case begins to haunt Holly as she is sure that the murder at the Hull Fair of her late superintendent could be related to that of her friend Moira who disappeared twenty-five years ago. Holly has kept this secret since Moira died and buried it deep inside her but never forgot her dear friend and Holly admits it was also one of the reasons, she joined the police force to help bring justice to the victims. Holly was also the last person with Moira before she vanished twenty-five years ago, and it has always bothered Holly how quick the case was closed.
As Holly and her team delve deeper into the case and another body shows up it is too much of a coincidence that both men worked or had something to do with the children’s home were Moira had lived when she was younger.
This is a fast-paced book with plenty of nail-biting moments as we go back in time when Holly was 19 and was at collage with Moira her best friend. We also learn about Hollys oldest daughter her father and Holly pregnancy whist she was still at collage. The book keeps you turning every page as the plot goes deeper and deeper as Holly unravels this case and finds it goes back to Moira's days in the children’s home with some dark and horrible secrets that Moira never shared with Holly. It is great the way the team interact and has great characters that will keep you hooked until the last page.
I loved this book and Paul Teague is now becoming one of my favourite authors due to how he can author such excellent books and is an exceptionally talented writer. I feel like I am in Hull with Holly and the team as Teague describes places with such intricate details that you could easily be there in the fair ground and the city. The whole book is so professionally written that you feel your part of the action, and the ending has left me wanting more from Holly and the Team. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
2.5 stars rounded to 3
Didn't realize this was a #5 in a series, so a few things confused me that related to previous cases/books, but overall it was a good one. The ending was a bit disappointing but solid twists along the way.
Detective Inspector Hollie has a new case fall in her lap that has ties to her past and her friend Moira who went missing in university. A string of murders is tied to a local children's home with allegations of previous abuse and Moira's disappearance. There are quite a few twists and turns along the way that made this an interesting read, but not a mind-blowing thriller.
Detective Hollie Turner returns in book #6 in the series, and this one gets personal.
In 1999, when Hollie was a 19 year old university student, her best friend Moira vanished one night while at the Hull funfair. Moira was never one to talk of her past, but not long before her disappearance, opened up to Hollie about her past in the care system, specifically the childrens home she was brought up in. Those weren't happy days, but she never gave Hollie enough details to be able to help in her disappearance.
25 years later and a body is found at the Hull fair, and Hollie can't help but think there may be a connection. On investigation, they realise the victim was connected to the children's home. Those worries are soon made even more real when another body is found who was also connected to the home.
I really enjoyed the layout of this plot line, with Hollie's flashbacks to her past, it really gelled the story together. It was a story that felt relevant to the way society was in 1999 and then switching to the here and now. It shows just how much can change but also the mistakes and prejudices that are still hanging around decades later.
The pacing throughout was spot on and seriously held my attention. It had me guessing the whole way through. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was span in another direction.
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
This book is the first I have read in the series so it works as a stand alone thriller. Hollie lost her best friend at the fair in 1999. Moira was never seen again and the case was handled poorly. This led Hollie to become a police officer so she could help people. Now, a new case might help reveal the truth of what happened years ago. I liked how the past is slowly unraveled to show the horror that has gone on for years.
Learning the truth about what happened to Moira years ago and the abuse that she endured was gut wrenching to read. This book kept you guessing until the end. You felt for Hollie and the emotional roller coaster she was on being part of the case.
This is book number 5 in the Detective Hollie Turner series and although it can be read as a standalone I recommend reading the previous books in the series to get the back story.
In 1999, Hollie’s best friend vanished from the Hull Fair and now another body is found on the ghost train.
Written in dual timelines this book introduces the reason why Hollie Turner became a policewoman and the connection with the current investigation. It is another well written addition to this series and I am already looking forward to book number six.
Highly recommended!
