I did not realize this book was in a series but the author did a great job of introducing and getting to know the previous characters. This time around the focus on Rias and Ashley point of view. This book had a little of everything. Action, mystery, romance, and drama are a few. But I enjoyed the reading about main couple and getting to know everyone else in that town. I am definitely going back on reading the other books in the series.
I enjoyed the story. The main characters were strong even though one came off a bit angry. I absolutely loved the action scenes in this one.
Thank you, Bold Strokes Books, and NetGalley.
Will they tell their secrets or will they keep each other in denial to the very last minute when it actually matters. The fantasy aspects were fine but underwhelming. The relationship was as cute as it was frustrating. I did like the twist of the reveal of where the monster hunter's sibling went. Pacing was good. Writing was a little show not tell-esque but it's fine.
I have a soft spot for fantasy books and this one wasn't bad, but not my favorite. I love supernatural themes and enjoyed the representation of non binary and trans characters.
Danaan Rias is a witch without a coven, forbidden from using her magic, but her magic gets out of control and she has no choice but to emerge. When her magic begins to act out of control, and she comes out of hiding. She meets Ashly and falls in love. Ashly Mercer is a monster hunter and is the youngest daughter who has sacrificed most of her life to the whims of her parents. While fighting for a life on her own terms, she meets Rias and discovers possibilities she never considered. Together their paths lead back to the supernatural sanctuary of Terabend.
They both have choices to make individually and together. The romance between them was written well, but it did need more world building and character building.
Overall, it was a decent book and had me wanting to know more, but it fell short in some places. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly this was a hard read, I DNF it multiple times but kept going back to it. The story was just too dragged out and not captivating
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
ashley and rias are mortal enemies though they dont know it...
ashley is a hunter of all things not human and rias is a witch
both are keeping secrets as their affair goes on... but each feels that the other will understand and accept them....
they are heading for a showdown that has been orchestrated by another powerful witch
time will tell if they survive
what a storyline.... so much happening and yet so brilliantly written to keep you reading right to the end... with the hope that things can sort itself out...
cant wait to read more from this author
Forbidden and yet predestined.
Danaan Rias is a witch who is forbidden to do magic. But her powers prove to her that she has no choice!
Especially when, after years of ignoring said powers, she briefly uses them to do the right thing, everything starts moving and sometimes gets out of control. During this time, her heart and her feelings get completely out of control and she meets her fate.
Ashly Mercer is a Monster Hunter in a family of Hunters and she is under constant control and observation by her father. She is the chicken of the family and is supposed to learn to hunt, but he lets her do nothing and only keeps breaking his promises.
So Ashly is not only frustrated, but also ready for something else!
Something real and something the woman she just met, gave her! This woman seems to be more than just a casual acquaintance for one night.
She can't forget Her. She doesn't want to forget Her!
It is a twisted love story of Rias and Ashly. It takes a long time before they can decide whether they will be able to bring their two very different worlds together or even understand each other!
We meet all the beloved characters from Terabend again and heartwarming, wonderful and scary things happen to them! It's exciting until the end!
Thanks to Bold Stroke Books, Elena Abbott for the ARC!
Hunt of Her Own is a stand alone novel set in the same paranormal world as Pack of Her Own (Mar 2023) and Mate of Her Own (Oct 2023). The focus in this book is on Danaan Rias, a witch who lives peacefully in a community of werewolves and others. She doesn’t have a coven and has been forbidden to use her magic by the witch world. But when her magic begins acting out she seeks help from a mentor. Her path crosses Ashly Mercer, first as a one night stand. They meet again months later and they agree to continue seeing each other although living hours apart. Ashley is a monster hunter. Raised to believe that she is one of the few that are called upon to kill monsters such as werewolves, vampires and witches. Neither is sure when to reveal their secret to the other.
I enjoyed the story. Ashley comes off as angry and impulsive. And I love how Rias and Ashley settle each other. Her two mishaps in the later half of the book gave me a chuckle. I thought the action scenes were good as was the villain. I was surprised at Ashley’s connection to another character, but it fit the story well. I do think that it helped that I already understood the world from reading the previous books. I do love the idea of found family that flows through stories.
I enjoyed certain aspects of this a lot.
I'm always a sucker for forbidden love and this has it front and center which is a really big hook. It could have been drawn out and handled a little more delicately to draw readers into it more, but overall it was good!
I can never get enough trans and non binary representation in books, so this definitely gets a big thumbs up on that front as there is plenty of it here!
The supernatural themes were all really fun and intriguing. I got Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes from the storyline and characters which was perfect!
I really enjoyed the intimate scenes between Ashly and Rias, I think they were handled very well and there was just enough spice to fit the length of the book in my opinion.
Regarding the negatives, I feel like the whole story would benefit from a bit more world building and character development. As much as I wanted to love some of the characters, especially the kick-ass fmcs, I never really felt it because I still don't really feel like I know them. The same goes for some of the side characters, most have them had so much potential to be amazing, but fell a little short for me.
