Engaging and fast paced with the slow burn reveal. I enjoyed blowing through this in the course of a day.
Abuse trigger warning
Mary and her husband Cal live off the grid in the Scottish Highlands. Mary is tasked with being the perfect 1950's housewife. The house must always be clean, dinner ready when Cal gets home from work and tending to his every whim. But, Mary isn't her real name and she doesn't want to be at the cabin or married to Cal. As Mary comes up with a plan to escape, Cal brings home another Mary, Mary -2, and keeps her locked in a cage in the barn, just like he did to her when she was brought to the cabin. Now Mary is torn, can she continue to plan her escape? What should she do about Mary-2?
This was a good psychological thriller from the start. Definitely has some triggers warnings to be aware. The end had some good twists and a fitting conclusion.
THE WOMAN IN THE CABIN was an excellent thriller. I enjoyed the overall story and was happy with the ending.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for my gifted copy.
I went into this book completely blind which is very different for me, however I think that decision was the best that I could have done. This let me really see the book play out just as the author intended without being spoiled by a bunch of other people's opinions. This book is all about our main character Mary. Mary lives hidden away in the forest with her husband, Cal. Every day it is the same thing as she has to get up before him and cook his breakfast and make sure he is ready for the day. She must then take care of the house the animals and make sure basically every thing he needs is done before he even gets home. I loved how the author didn't even have to write anything in particular however she really showed the tension being Mary's life so if left the reader desperate to know what was really going on with this couple. I loved coming up with all the different scenarios in my head as to why there was so much tension between the couple however nothing could have surprised me more than when I found out the truth. Our main character Mary struggles at times but it isn't until she finds a letter addressed to "the next woman" that we really see the rose colored glasses come off and things start to appear for what they really are. This is the kind of book that will keep you up all night as you are determined to get to the bottom of things. I loved everything about this book but the fact that we were figuring things out along with Mary made it so much better because we saw how easily she was fooled. This was unlike any other thriller I have read before and I found myself completely unable to put it down for any reason. With so many twist and turns this is one book that will really keep you guessing which is the best part. This book was so full of tension and the author did a great job of showing the fear in our main character that if made the rest of the book feel like I was walking on egg shells along with our main characters. Great read the only negative thing that I have about this book is I will never be able to get that feeling of shock and surprise that I had when I read it the first time. Right when I thought that they're couldn't be anything else to shock me I was thrown a curve ball that completely shifted the entire narrative of the story. The ending I think had to be the best part I never would have called that through the entire book and it really changed the way that I saw the rest of the story.
This was my 2nd Becca Day thriller and it will not be the last! You are immediately drawn into Mary's life thinking everything is perfect, but you soon see what's really going on! You just have to keep reading to see how Mary's story unfolds!
The Woman In The Cabin by Becca Day is a very good book.
Its also my first book by this author and i really enjoyed it.
I felt so much sympathy for some of the characters especially the main female.
I didn't know where the story was going to go and the twists were good.
The more i read the more i hated certain characters and my heart hurt for others.
So happy the story ended the way it did.
This was a decent read, though it’s similar to many other books out there. Mary strives to be the perfect wife to Cal, who goes to work every day and leaves her at their very secluded home to cook and clean for him. It’s a bit of a slow burn initially but you know way something is definitely not right. As the story continues, the reader gets more insight into how Mary ended up in her current situation.
While I did enjoy Mary’s will to fight for what is right I couldn’t exactly figure out why it took her so long to do so, and I don’t feel that the author really told me that. There were a couple good twists in the book and I felt that the second half was very fast paced. The end was pretty good- I thought it tied the loose ends together well.
Overall, decent read- while not super unique, it did provide some good twists and o found myself engaged throughout. I’d give it 3.5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The woman in the cabin by Becca Day is my first book from the author and it won’t be my last.
Mary lives in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands with her tree surgeon husband Cal. Whilst he is off to work, she is a good wife by cooking his meals and tidying the cabin that they live in and dressing and looking nice to please her husband. She doesn’t venture far from the property. Her husband Cal says it’s not safe out there and there is people that may want to harm her.
But why living such a life does she feel so trapped?
As the story goes on, it is slowly revealed how ‘Mary’s ‘life came to be, and more sinister things are at play. Even so, when cleaning the cabin, she finds letters from the previous ‘Mary’ that she knows now that she needs to escape.
Wow what can I say. This is an intense dark thriller that had me hooked from the first page. I couldn’t stop reading as I wanted to find out more that I read it until the small hours of the morning. This is a great read but grim, A story of intense manipulation and a controlling situation. I can’t wait to read more from this author. 5 stars.
Good atmospheric thriller, claustrophobic and full of twists! Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for my ARC
Excellent twisty storyline.
Keeps you guessing right to the end.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review
Thanks net galley for this great story, every so often you get a book you can not put down and this was one of those.
Mary has been kidnapped and forced to clean and cook all day, just to wait for Carl to come home. They live in the woods in the Scottish highlands and Mary has to do what Carl wants to look pretty and dress up for him and tell him she loves him all the time or else he will turn nasty to her and lock her up In a cage.
Mary is beginning to look older and put on weight and she knows that if she does not please Carl he will get rid of her and find a new woman.
He brings her creams for her body and lipstick but it does not cover her unhappiness and the chance to escape.
Look forward to another book by this author loved it.
I received a digital copy of this book as an ARC and it had me hooked from the beginning. There are a lot of twists and turns and the end is not at all what I expected it to be when I began reading. Highly recommend if you love a great psychological thriller with surprising twists!
What a fabulously dark and twisted book this was. Mary is a wife to Cal, she does all she can to make herself the best wife she can be, subservient, chores done, cleaning and cooking all done, she makes an effort to look nice, stay in shape and try to be the perfect wife. After all, he works all day to provide for her and brings her little treats. She is so busy with tending the home and garden she does not have time to go anywhere. Their home is a cabin in rural Scotland, a loch is close by and there are woodlands and mountains. It sounds so tranquil and ideal, but that is the ruse!
It all sounds too good to be true and believe me when I say this is very true. What really happens is something much more sinister and the author provides a wonderful twisted story of manipulation and coercion.
I am not going to dwell too much on the plot of the story because that is something you are soon going to discover for yourself when you start this book. The author starts with two characters and as such this almost has the feel of a locked room thriller due to its rural and isolated location. While it sounds like a lovely place to be, if it is not where you want to be then it becomes something very different.
The author tells of Mary and her everyday life, of the relationship between her and Cal and how over time it starts to change. Reading the story of this recent change between them also brings o that this is not the first time things have happened, but now something is very different.
This is a tense and twisted dark thriller, the author has given her characters some amazing personalities with their own strengths, weaknesses and perceptions. There is something else to this story that you discover towards the end of the book which again adds another twist.
I adored this book and would have happily read it in one sitting, but boring things like work does get in the way of a good book. Good is an understatement for this one and if you like dark thrillers then I would definitely recommend this one.
I enjoyed this book but have read similar. The twist was brilliant though! Didn't see that one coming
What an excellent read, once started I couldn't put it down and read it in two days. Good story line and great characters. Will be looking for more from this author.
My thanks to Netgalley and Publisher Embla Books for the opportunity for the early read
Mary is the perfect wife to her husband Cal, but everything isn’t as it seems. They live in the secluded woods, Mary rarely leaves the house and never leaves the property, and what about the woman before?
I found he writing juvenile, the plot terrible and the story telling repetitive and boring. It was a struggle to finish this one.
The blurb reads unputdownable thriller and yep true I was hooked. what a book. loved it. Another great read of 2024
This book had my heart beating out of my chest. This is the stuff of nightmares! Imagine being held hostage by your husband for 10 years?! This whole book was so cringey, like I could not keep my guard down for a second before something else horrible happened. It was a great book: psychological thriller at its best. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced cooy in exchange for my honest review.
I don’t want to give anything away and spoil the journey on which this psychological thriller will take the reader. Mary lives in a cabin with her husband Cal in the middle of nowhere in the Scottish Highlands. She has no contact with anyone other than Cal. She works hard to be the perfect wife that he expects and requires. She does have some gaps in her memory, but Cal is quick to fill in her concerns. The story keeps you riveted and fearful. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Mary and Cal live a seemingly idyllic life in the Scottish Highlands. Living off grid and self sufficient their lives seem perfect, but Marys life is far from being perfect. Though I found this book repetitive, it drew me in. I hated Cal and was desperate for Mary to escape. Although I enjoyed this book I prefer Becca Days previous novels. I would recommend The Woman in the Cabin but be aware it contains upsetting themes.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book.
