The description of this mystery really drew me in, but I'm afraid it was far too descriptive. For example the level of detail on natural wines and information on wine making itself was far too detailed and for me really slowed the story down to the point of boredom. If I had been reading the story I would have skipped ahead, but this couldn't be done for an audiobook. I found the narrators voices quite hard work as well. So sorry, not a hit for me I'm afraid. Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley
This is good women's fiction with lots of twists and turns and lots of secrets to be uncovered.
I was hooked, I wanted to know what happened and I wasn't disappointed!
I listen to the audiobook version and I liked it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was really looking forward to getting an ARC for this title however I am truly disappointed with the lack of depth in this thriller. The blurb sounded great, great setting, great set up but that’s as far as the greatness went. It took forever to get into the story and then it just dragged with insignificant information. The narrator was also party to my dislike of this book- the voice either dragging or sounded speeded up when adjusting the listening levels- no happy medium.
I really liked the premise of the story and I like wine, it was set in Napa and New York, two places I want to visit so it seemed to be promising an interesting read.
Unfortunately the book didn't live up to my hopes. I could understand June being devastated about her missing/presumed dead husband and thinking she saw him around. I could even understand her chasing a possible sighting of him halfway across the country, after all why did his body never show up? Many of her subsequent actions are dubious.
Bev on the other hand was very difficult to warm to at all and the decisions she made were way off kilter, she questions her past decisions constantly then goes on to make even more questionable choices. What her husband did was bad but she did worse for breaking their marriage vows and didn't seem to get that.
There was way too much wine talk.
As for the ending, just no! It was the least believable part of the entire book. It came out of left field and made little sense. It read more like a dream sequence where a person seems to be someone they are not.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the DRC.
This was such a quick easy read...My full review is to follow next week. Thank you so much netgalley
I am so sorry but this book just wan't for me. I listened to the audio copy and disliked the first two narrators especially the narrator for Bev, it just didn't seem to match her character, but then again from quite early on I found her character to be rather contradictory at times but didn't really realise this was potentially some kind of clue.
I found the first third of the book to be really slow and bogged down in unnecessary detail regarding organic, natural wines versus those grown commercially etc etc.
Linguistically it was very well written but there were so many twists and all the characters were so unpleasant that by the end I really didn't care who was responsible for what!
3.5⭐️ The change in narration really was notable, and it kinda changed the flow of the story for me!
Is Josh Andrew Smith? Did he really die in the drowning accident? June never really believed that he did at the time although all other friends and family did. They thought she was simply grief stricken and, in shock, unable to accept the truth.
June owns a natural wine bar in Brooklyn and is engaged to Kyle she had believed she had moved on but when she sees a photo online this man called Andrew Smith who runs a winery in Napa and looks just far too similar to her husband who was believed to have drowned. His body was never recovered AND the fact he owns a winery that is just the same as June and Josh had spoken of so how are all these coincidences coming up and why now as June is ready to embark on a beautiful new beginning of life.
June decides she has to figure out the mystery of her findings she can't just let this go. Did her husband fake his own death? She is about to find out...
This is a dual timeline that actually took me a little bit to work out who was who and how they were connected and even who was talking at times. So the story basically covers June's life when her son was 3 the events of her husbands disappearance, then 11 years later how she and her son are affected then almost a little separate part of the audiobook when June goes to Napa to discover the truth of what happened to Josh so for June it's like 3 parts. Add in to the mix the detectives and of course the family and others connected to the family, including the parents of josh, which is when we find the author takes us back to 1999. It almost felt like an overlap of 2 books at times rather than a dual timeline that was a little different from other books I've listened to that are dualistic!
I genrally overall enjoyed this book, although I did notice that around chapter 37, the audio sounded totally different. However, on looking at the details, there are 3 narrators. Is this possibily why? Sadly for me this ruined the flow of the story and it took a little bit of time to try get back into it, also one other piece of constructive criticism is that it felt a little bit repetitive of the winery scenarios over explaining about wine making etc some parts of Josh mum story felt a little irrelevant and almost like it was just a space filler. As for Kyle , I didn't want to put a spoiler in here however I was a little confused by his part towards the end. There were many twists throughout, albeit some fairly obvious it was still an enjoyable listen, especially the first 3/4 of the book!
With thanks to Netgalley & Harper Collins UK Audio for this ARC in return for a review.
I randomly requested this as I liked the title and cover but I found myself wanting more and found it a bit slow. I enjoyed the narration and got really into it and was interested to see where it was going! Overall I enjoyed it and would check out more by the author in the future. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for this audio arc.
Oh deary me!
This was akin to a foxtrot, slow, slow, quick quick slow.
Now it wasn’t all bad, by part three I was actually quite gripped. The tension had built, I felt that I was getting to know the characters well, and I was really getting warmed up to the storyline, by this point I had to life, so I paused, desperate to get to the end and find out exactly what had gone down, the minute I had a chance I put it back on, now I don’t know what happened in the time I was away, but I swear to god had the narrator not been the same I’d have thought I picked up a different book.
What happened? Why so suddenly dynasty? No, Falcon Crest!
I really wonder if I’d have finished it in one sitting if I’d have loved it. However I think not, All of the twists (which were done to death) have been done so many times before, it was extremely transparent. The final twist was absolutely dire.
What a pity, it all started so well.
The narration for the most part was enjoyable however for Junes character the narrator used a high rise, which made almost every line a question and became a bit tedious.
This is pitched as a thriller, new readers to the genre may enjoy it, but sadly it wasn’t for me.
I kinda hate myself for this review. I’m sorry 🤷🏻♀️🙁
My gratitude to HarperCollins UK Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this audiobook 🎧
