I have not read any of the books in the series yet and heard that they can be read as standalones, which I believe is absolutely true. This was a very good novel about a serial killer who pours acid on their victims. I will say that this is a slow burn book but the twists and turns about 2/3 of the way in are great. I typically read these kinds of novels and absolutely enjoyed it!

A Dark Place by Trevor Negus is a highly recommended intense procedural. This thirteenth book in the series has DCI Danny Flint and team searching for a monstrous killer using acid.

Homeless addict Terrence McAvoy is found dead, secured up right. His death was clearly torture. The killer used acid in a horrific manner. Then an off duty police officer who was walking his dog late at night is found shot. It is unknown if this death is related to the first. This is followed by another victim of the acid killer found, a pharmaceutical companies CEO. And then another victim, a scientist who worked for the same pharmaceutical company, is found killed in the same manner. Now the search is on for a serial killer.

Be forewarned that the manner of death used by the killer is gruesome and horrific in this well-written procedural. A Dark Place is a perfect choice for fans of procedurals as each new piece of information or clue that the investigations undertake are closely followed. The narrative is basically following the police investigation with some chapters from the point-of-view of the perpetrator.

While I enjoyed the novel, it did feel a bit slow a bit too long and drawn out. Even though it is part of a long running series, it can be read as a standalone novel. This was intense and a bit scary at times. I enjoyed this book. I wasn't aware it was a series and now I need to binge read the rest of them. It reads as a standalone as there wasn't a lot referenced in previous books which I found great. I wasn't lost or confused but now want to read more.

I have never read a Danny Flint novel before this one and for it being the 13th book in the series I’m confident in saying you can read this as a standalone easily.

While investigating the death of an unhoused man with severe chemical burns, Danny also investigates a case of a man officer being shot while walking his dog off duty. There is no reason to think these two cases are connected, until another victim is found dead with the same chemical burns. And then another. And then the killer abducts someone close to Danny and he has to race against the clock to stop the same fate from happening to his friend.

This entire story was captivating and thrilling and I kept reading just waiting for the final climatic scene. The amount of twists and turns in this story was well worth the read.

This series never disappoints - suspense, mystery, action, and real emotions all weave together in a multi-layer investigation that always has twists and turns at a relentless pace. Keep them coming!

A Dark Place is #13 in DCI Danny Flint series, this was the first time ready this book/series and can say it didn't matter that i hadn't read the others.

DCI Danny Flint gets a call about a murder of an homeless man by acid attack, from there is more murders by the same nature and is gets more personal as one of Danny's work colleague/ friend ends up being kidnapped and same fate awaiting him as the others.

This was fast paced, gripping read with few twist and shocks though.Definitely recommend this book and will be starting the series from book 1.

The thirteenth book in the series featuring DCI Danny Flint. The story takes place in 1991. It's a fast paced investigations but I did find the method of the murders very gruesome and disturbing. I really enjoy the procedural details in this series and the plot of this story has a number of good twists and plenty of suspense. A thrilling read which I'm sure will be popular.

This is a very enjoyable read in the DCI Danny Flint series and still fresh at book 13. It can easily be read as a stand alone but I do recommend the series to lovers of crime thrillers. The characterisation is excellent, as is the plotting, although it is a bit gruesome in parts! I like the team dynamics and there is plenty of tension right until the end. Danny and his team are dealing with two seemingly unconnected murders. An off-duty police officer was shot whilst walking his dog through an industrial estate, and the body of a homeless addict was discovered – with gruesome acid burns on his head.

While the team is trying to work out why anyone would do that to a homeless man, another body is found with similar horrific acid burns to his head. Then there’s a third body. There is now a connection between the second and third men but it’s still a mystery as to how they could be connected to the homeless man. Now that there have been three deaths, it’s a serial killer they’re looking for and Danny needs to stop this evil person from killing again, and he’s still no closer to finding out why their police colleague was shot.

Danny and his wife are good friends with Seamus Carter, the pathologist, and his fiancée, Gemma. Danny is at home when he opens the door to a very upset Gemma, who tells him that Seamus hasn’t come home tonight. The race to find the killer was already urgent, but now that the pathologist has gone missing, the race becomes desperate.

Another brilliant instalment in this series, and I look forward to the next one.

I rave about Trevor Negus to anyone who will listen - I love the Danny Flint books and i'm always pumped when I see a new one. His background as a Police Officer makes for a interesting, exciting and enjoyable thriller.

A Dark Place was another fantastic installment in the series - a homeless man is found dead, with gruesome injuries, before more bodies are found. Danny and his team are working hard to find the link, and the killer before more victims are taken. Things really ramp up when a good friend of Danny's goes missing. Once again, the dark gloomy setting and lack of modern crime solving technology make a change from the modern settings with internet searches and CCTV on every corner to rely on. This is good old fashioned police work and it is fabulous. I love Danny's character - and there are some glimpses into his personal life which make him more likeable.

The murders are quite gruesome but not overly detailed so it's not off putting. A few twists to keep things interesting and I enjoy the changes from the Police investigation to the murder's POV. I loved following along to see who was committing the crimes and the reasons why - I think a backstory is so important to understanding the mind of a killer and Trevor nails this. I cannot fault this book.

Another easy 5/5 from me - perfect for fans of crime novels and the Criminal Minds TV show.

I love the Danny Flint novels. They are set in the early 90's, and while there were modern methods of solving murders, nothing was quite as refined and polished as forensics and tests are nowadays.
The police work is clever and the teams use their common sense.
This kept me gripped throughout, even with the red herrings of suspects, and there was a satisfying and happy end for Danny's friend - well, kind of.
