This was my favourite book in the series so far, mainly because Reece was the perfect book boyfriend. I loved how tightly wound up he was yet every interaction with Skylar left him feeling completely out of control ("feral") like a teenager. Skylar, despite struggling with her self-esteem after an abusive relationship, was always in charge of her own story, and I loved her dynamic with Reece which was so loving but also sizzling with spice. Having said that, there were times when I just wanted to knock some sense into Reece - I wish he'd come to his senses earlier so we could have had a few more chapters with them as an established couple.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spicy and fun
Skylar is the captain of Calverdale Ladies football club but her life changes when she breaks up with her boyfriend, darling of the men’s team Sean, but support comes in the guise of Reece, a psychologist who has been hired to help the team be in the best place for the end of the season who has liked Skylar from afar since they were at school together (all of this is revealed in the first few chapters so no spoilers!)
I liked Skylar, she felt relatable and incredibly human, the pain and hurt she feels from the breakup came through and as a reader I really emphasised with her. Reece was a harder character for me to bond with, he has some obsessive qualities that I struggled with but I also understand how things affect him, his internal conflicts and the way that these manifest in his life. Once I got to know him better as a character I started to like him more, until he did something stupid, and then I was back to not being his biggest fan (this happened a few times for me!)
When I first heard about this series I was excited to read it, it allowed me to see into the world of elite women’s football and behind the scenes in a way that I hadn’t before. I will admit that this book was the one with the blurb that captured my attention most and I’m so glad that it did and that it lived up to and surpassed my expectations what I was hoping and dreaming for
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a spicy romance with quirky but loveable characters which will have you hooked right from the start

I have been enjoying sports romance series lately. The Playing the Field series is my latest read. Book 2 was fantastic! This series had been wonderful!

Sasha Lace has done it again. This is the second book in her Playing The Field series and it just keeps getting better.

Once again she has created wonderful characters that are both relatable and offer an escape from reality. I feel that this book dove much deeper into the challenges people all over the world face and that the topics of the story were slightly darker than that of the first. That isn’t to say that there was no laughter because there certainly was. There were times when the humour from the characters was all I could think about. The MMC has a very dry sense of humour and I thought that this fit his character and personality perfectly.

I also loved the fact that that the book follows on from the first in terms of the timeline and that we get glimpses of the first couples life now. Whilst this is a series I don’t think you have to have read the first book but just keep in mind that some of the MMC’s story is explained in the first book and that there will be spoilers.

Sasha has written another masterpiece that I won’t hesitate to recommend to anyone.

First time reading this author, and I throughly enjoyed this.
The banter between the siblings can be very funny, and was the best part of this book.
I didn’t warmup to the Hero, and found him to be very hot/cold in his approach with the heroine.
The heroine however was a really entertaining and interesting character.

This is a short and sweet read, perfect for those looking for something light.

The book was a bit repetitive, as the characters go back and forth on the same conflict through the entire book.

This book puts Reece, previously a side character, in the spotlight alongside Skylar, the determined captain of a women’s soccer team. After her long-term relationship with Sean, the men’s team captain, falls apart, Skylar is left juggling personal turmoil with the pressure of leading her team to victory in their most important matches yet. Meanwhile, Reece, on the brink of burnout from his career as a clinical psychologist, steps into a new role as the team’s mindset coach. Despite a history of unrequited feelings for Skylar dating back to their school days, Reece strives to maintain a professional demeanor, even as the attraction between them grows.

I found the story compelling and emotionally charged, especially the tension around the blurred lines of professionalism. Instead of being a genuine barrier, Reece uses his "professionalism" as a way to keep his distance, though his role with the team isn't strictly therapeutic. Skylar’s journey to regain her confidence on and off the field was particularly satisfying to watch, especially as she takes control of both her career and her personal life. The chemistry between the two main characters, as Skylar actively pursues Reece, creates the perfect amount of drama and intensity.

The author once again does a great job fleshing out the broader universe of the team, making for an enjoyable and immersive experience. It's a well-written, British-set sports romance that I'd gladly recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing the eARC!

2.5/5

Thank you so much for the ARC Montlake & Netgalley exchange for an honest review.

Whilst I did enjoy this more than the first book, it seemed a lot more cohesive and flowed really nicely. But it was quite repetitive and I found myself getting bored towards the 70% mark and I just wanted it to be over.

In comparison to the first book it was definitely better but I'm sorry, it just wasn't for me and I can't bring myself to finish the series.

Thank you NetGalley & Montlake for allowing me access to Playing to Score: 2 (Playing the Field)by Sasha Lace, it'll be out on Nov 15 2024 and it follows Skylar & Reece, two new characters but once again the FMC is the one playing sport which is something that I thoroughly enjoyed reading! The MMC is pining and the FMC is a badass what more can you ask! I loved it!

I devoured this one so fast. I absolutely LOVED Reece so much, he gave me tortured soul vibes and all I wanted to do was make him feel better. Skylar is absolutely one of my favorite FMCs in a long time. She is incredibly strong, vulnerable and super relatable. I absolutely hated Sean more than anyone and I wish he would have gotten Regina George’d.

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Reece is Miri’s brother and he needs a break from hospital life. When an opportunity comes up to work at the soccer club Miri’s husband owns, Reece snatches it up. Little did he know that he’d call for Skylar Marshall, the captain of the soccer team.

I loved Reece and Skylar’s story. I related to the anxiety and high stress of being the oldest child like Reece. I found myself not wanting to put this book down as their romance played out on the pages. Absolutely adored it!! Favorite book in the series so far.

I think I enjoyed this second instalment of the series more than the first! Having met Reece as Miri's brother in book 1, now he's front and centre as the MMC in Playing to Score, as the love interest of Calderdale Ladies captain Skylar. Skylar's relationship with her high school sweetheart Sean, the men's captain, has imploded. Low in confidence, and with three critical games to win so that her team can be promoted to the Women's Super League, Skylar needs to focus on bringing her A game on the pitch, no matter the state of her personal life. And Reece, who is quickly approaching burnout, leaves his stressful clinical psychologist job at the hospital when he's offered a job as a team psychologist to help with the ladies' mindset and focus. Skylar finds Reece easy to talk to, and is increasingly drawn to him; Reece has pined for Sylar since they were at school together (even if she didn't know he existed), but his attraction is kept in check by his compulsion to remain professional and detached and in control...

I really enjoyed how this played out. It was pretty angsty, and I loved that the idea of the 'professional barrier' was, in this instance, something that Reece was using as a shield, rather than a genuine obstacle; he casts Skylar as his 'client' despite there never being any formal agreement - she certainly doesn't see things that way, and while he does word for the team, it's not as a therapist. Reece struggles to keep Skylar at arms length emotionally, while also recognising how he can help her regain her self-confidence. As she rediscovers her agency and strength, she applies those attributes in her pursuit of a relationship with Reece, which is just *chef's kiss* in terms of drama!

Once more, the author does a great job of building out the supporting cast and the 'world' of Calderdale United, leaving me wanting to read more. Again, an enjoyable read, and one I'd be happy to recommend for those wanting a British-set sports romance!

Lace masterfully builds tension between Skylar and Reece, making every stolen glance and shared moment charged with palpable chemistry. The author’s writing is both engaging and emotionally resonant, capturing the complexities of professional relationships and the intensity of unspoken desires. It simply blew me away!
