I read an eARC of this book on NetGalley so thank you to the author and publisher.
Wow what a setting this book has! Such an interesting and evocative location. So atmospheric! This book is set on an airship that is on an early voyage to the arctic before fully launching. One of the founders has invited some childhood friends as well as various influencers and travel journalists. Ezra has spent years working on this business with his dad’s friend to try and bring his dad’s dream to life after he sadly lost his father. Airship tourism in the arctic is finally about to launch and he’s hoping this early voyage will provide endorsement and coverage of the company to help fend off a competitor.
However things start to go wrong quite quickly. We see multiple perspectives throughout this book but we mainly hinge around a young and inexperienced travel blogger who has been sent as a freelancer when the journalist who was supposed to go has to cancel because of a family emergency. We see her observations of the tensions between characters, the faults that start to surface and the mysterious death that occurs.
This was a fairly clever mystery with lots of layers, historical grievances, subtle connections. But the real star of this book is the arctic setting and the airship itself. The isolation this provides, and the specific technical and logistical considerations that come from being on an airship are just fascinating!
For me, this is this author’s best book yet!
I really enjoy books by Tom Hindle, so I was delighted to be approved to read this newest release via @netgalley.
This one is set aboard a luxurious helium airship voyage to the North Pole. There’s a cast of characters on its maiden voyage, including the two creators of the airship company, their old school friends, a reporter and a couple of influencers. Mayhem soon ensues when one of the founders is discovered dead in his cabin.
This was an easy, enjoyable read. It wasn’t the most demanding murder mystery I’ve ever read and I even guessed some of the solution (which is exceptionally rare for me) but I’m glad I read it. It offered a nice bit of escapism. This comes out mid January in the UK and it would be a perfect cosy read under a blanket in those miserable post Christmas days.
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for a free review copy in exchange for an honest review (#ad #prproduct).
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5 stars)
A fabulously written gripping story that was a pleasure to read. I would absolutely recommend this book, it was brilliant
An interesting location and a giant airship are where a murder mystery unravels on the maiden voyage of Osprey a potential green alternative to conventional air travel. Unfortunately the maiden flight is beset with problems culminating in the death of the company founder. Who is responsible for this and why. Now the other passengers friends and a journalist and photographer and staff are captive aboard Osprey with a murderer in their midst’s. Chloe a blogger and travel journalist finds the crucial piece of evidence that solves the crime but not before several false starts. An enjoyable read.
A luxury airship is on a first trip over the Arctic. Its passengers have been carefully selected as friends of the company’’s founders or as “influencers” who will promote the amazing experience. The trip doesn’t go smoothly and the relationships between the passengers are more complicated than it first seemed.
I really enjoyed this book it was refreshing and an easy pacy read. I’ll certainly be reading more Tom Hindle.
"Death in the Arctic" is the second mystery I have read by Tom Hindle, with an altogether colder setting than "Death on Lake Garda". The majority of the action takes place on the new, luxury airship Osprey, which is on a trial flight from Svalbard over the North Pole. The aim is to get feedback on the service and also to generate some publicity. There are less than 20 people on board the Osprey, staff and guests, so when one of the owners dies there are a limited number of suspects. There are suspicions and red herrings a-plenty to keep the reader guessing as to who is the killer.
This is a well-crafted book with interesting characters and unusual locations. Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
A trip to the North Pole turns nasty. Travel writer Chloe embarks on what should be the trip of a lifetime but not all goes to plan. There’s a death, possibly murder. Great descriptions of the icy Arctic and a clever plot with lots of suspects makes for a great read. Love Tom Hindle’s books!
I love Tom Hindle books and have read three of his previous ones so I was looking forward to reading his latest one and I wasn't disappointed .Something very different a new luxurious airship which does a round trip of the North Pole .Great characters and descriptions and of course the odd death with everyone trapped in the airship .Every one is suspicious of each other .Absolutely loved this book and it had a great twist at the end .Than you to NetGalley for my ARC.
This is a cosy locked-room murder mystery set in an airship over the arctic. Although the ending was fairly predictable, I enjoyed getting there. Recommended for a good read whilst travelling or on holiday.
A modern airship, luxury green travel, on its maiden voyage around Svalbard and the other islands. Guests are hand chosen to cover aspects of the travel in order to promote this vehicle to the very rich discerning holiday crowd. The descriptions of the ice, fragility of the landscape and the wildness/wilderness are excellent. The murder intriguing and, obviously, it's a 'closed-room' scenario albeit an unusual one. Chloe, the onboard blogger hoping to become a travel writer, sort of takes on detecting. Petty jealousies, secrets never to be told, espionage - all have their place before the airship gets back to base. The ending is just! The descriptions of context are very well done; characters are a bit two-dimensional and shallow but, still, an entertaining read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC of this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found the concept refreshing and intriguing.
The setting of Tromsø, fjords and the airship itself were described perfectly. At no point did I feel the author was excessive in his descriptions, but I felt I could picture every setting perfectly.
The storyline was intriguing and made for a great murder mystery. The introduction of all the characters as a list at the beginning felt daunting in feeling there was no way to remember who was who, but the author did a great job of naturally allowing you to get to know them all. I enjoyed the numerous different factors surrounding the death and how these could be linked to almost all of the characters at times.
Where the book lost a star for me was how other storylines didn’t feel deep enough for me. The main character’s life was described well, but she still felt quite two dimensional. I think I’d have enjoyed it more if the relationship between characters had been strengthened and changed throughout the book.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I’ll definitely be giving others by this author a go!
Not a bad read. A bit predictable and very slow going so wasn't sure I was going to stick with it. However I did and it wasn't a bad read. On holiday if you found this to read by the pool you'd be happy
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
First book by this author and I found it really good. Great twist at the end.
Absolutely brilliant with a fantastic location.
Chloe Campbell is a struggling travel blogger who gets given the opportunity of a life time, which she jumps to accept. The opportunity involves writing a review of a brand new luxurious airship, on a trip round the North Pole, the first of it's kind.
Once Chloe arrives at the location to board the airship she feels an unease, that something is not quite right and rightly so as after the first night on board, a body is found under suspicious circumstances.
Stuck at the top of the world miles from civilisation, this locked room mystery will keep you guessing.
Not a bad little mystery but it took a long time to get going. I was almost half way through the book before someone actually died. So very much a slow burner. Not really an edge of your seat kind of book.
A classic locked room mystery, set in the unique environment of a helium airship. We walk along with several of our characters throughout the journey, each having their own secrets, of which some may be a reason for murder.
Nicely written, however the ending was fairly expected.
I loved this book. I was entertained by Hindle’s writing style, plot, characters and trying to discover the killer. Short chapters had me whizzing through the book. I couldn’t put it down.
The story is about a luxury airship, the Osprey, on her promotional 2-day flight to the North Pole, owned by Skyline Voyages. The passengers were hand-picked for this flight to promote the future flights of The Osprey. There is a passenger & crew manifest at the beginning of the book which I found helpful.
The writing is pacy and atmospheric with red herrings and lots of banter between the passengers and the crew. Once The Osprey is in the air, the fun begins….and then a dead body is found. An accident….or not? I recommend reading the book to find out! This novel is for all ''whodunnit'' fans.
I would give a 4-star rating.
THANK YOU TO THE PUBLISHER AND NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY OF READING AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS BOOK IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. ALL OPINIONS ARE MY OWN.
This was a step up from previous works. I was engrossed throughout but it was starting to get predictable.
This book has the unique setting of an airship above the North Pole, and what a great setting it turned out to be! I absolutely loved this book, Tom’s writing style was brilliant and kept me needing to read more and more. The plot and characters were really well developed and it made for a great read.
Another cracking piece of classic crime from Tom Hindle. I thought the setting and overall plot was fantastic, I particularly loved the use of air ships and even ended up down a rabbit hole looking into their history and potential comeback! The sense of place was great and the characters were all well developed with plenty of misdirection to keep you hooked. I did have a slight suspicion of how things would turn out but this definitely didn’t affect my overall enjoyment. If you have enjoyed Tom’s other novels then you’ll love this one too!
