This is an absolutely superb book.
I was first captivated by Formula One as an eight year old when I watched Mika Hakkinen sailing round tracks in a silver McLaren. In recent years the dominations of Mercedes and Red Bull (as well as the controversies like the 2021 season) have made me grow disillusioned. I’m pleased to say that this book has made me fall back in love with F1 again.
I cannot find fault with this book. Each season is succinctly written about and the newspaper articles reviewing a particular race, situation or interview are perfectly chosen, giving us brilliant insight into the F1 circus at that time. I adore the photographs which beautifully capture some of the special but significant moments that television cameras might have missed or weren’t available for. I particularly love some of the pictures from the really early seasons, with cars with multiple wheels off the ground and drivers with muddied, exhausted faces. My other highlight is the little facts on each summary page, most of which were unknown to me. Some of these were particularly interesting & delightful.
I am hoping that, as it’s December, someone might get me this book for Christmas. If they don’t I will definitely be buying it and adding it to my collection. If you are an F1 fan (or have one in your life), buy this book. It is one I will be perusing time and again.
A big thank you to the author, publisher & NetGalley for the chance to read this in return for my review.
A stunning book, brilliantly written, entertaining and very informative.
I have been an F1 fan for 30 years, so the latter chapters in the book were exciting reminders of moments I had witnessed but forgotten. The earlier ones just blew my mind! With the necessity for F1 drivers today to be so supremely physically fit, I was amazed to read that Fangio was 39 years old when he started his career! I was also shocked to read about how many drivers, marshalls and spectators were killed in the early years - and the race just carried on!
Absolutely brutal!
A really great book!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Kevin Eason and Collins Reference & The Times for an ARC in return for an honest review.
This is a must read book for any F1 fans either old fans or newer fans. I need this book in my own library :)
Superb collection of articles about a sport that I have grown to love. Intelligently written and extremely informative.
Great F1 book that covers many key events such as the most iconic races, epic rivalries, engineering innovations and statistics, Appreciated the coverage of 74 World Championships, from 1950 to 2023 as it took us back in time through all the individuals who won the f1 world championship.
As a relatively new fan of F1, I was keen to read more about the history and how the sport has evolved to where it is today. The newspaper extracts are great to read how the news was reported at the time and this book gives a real in depth view of each F1 season and the notable events. A great reference book for any F1 fan.
