Really good varied quiz questions and learned a lot from this. I like the themed rounds and the pot luck to select from for pub quizzes.
What are the chances? We've been actively and by choice going through an earlier pub quiz book in this series – albeit when it was published by Carlton – on a daily basis for the last few months, as a family. It's been alright, too, beyond some terrible proof-reading ("Graham le Saux finished playing football with which club? Emilia Clarke. Who played Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys? Ukraine." were consecutive questions in one round, I kid not). Oh, and it was also daft in asking so many questions about the positioning of the numbers on a dartboard – is this really for pub quizzes?! How hard would it be for a team member to, I don't know, look up at the wall?
But here is more of the same – although we get 20 questions per quiz now, not 30, and we cycle through easy-medium-hard twice over, and there are now picture rounds too. The format remains, though, of plain questions, with the answer in a block at the foot of the page but displaced either a turn ahead or a page behind. You get one set of 'pot luck' general knowledge questions, then a quiz on a unified, specific subject, such as sport, literature – or, as here, TV cooks, Jessicas, protests and protestors, palindromes, and podcasts, before reverting to pot luck. Oh, and you also get much wrist-ache if you have a long session holding the thing and checking answers with it.
I hope it's obvious I didn't go through every word of this for review purposes – as I say, I'm going through the prequel and that's taken months to get halfway. But you don't actually have to go some way for contention to arise – an early answer is "The Nightmare Before Christmas" yet the question asks for a Tim Burton film, when he didn't direct that. But I didn't see any heinous issues with the proof-reading, considering the above quotes were a paperback and the book concerned here was an early digital edition.
All told quiz books of much content and good value are awkward to get right, and this succeeds as far as I could tell. Of course it shares some content with the old one – they do like to test you on where Major Major Major Major comes from – but it's a darned sight more fresh and current than you might fear. Nor is the difficulty level ill-judged – the easy rounds don't start with the blindingly obvious, but every round I looked at feature a lot you should know and some you are expected to struggle with. Speaking without the diligence and the months to be sure, this is a strong four stars as a purchase choice.
I like the green cover, it reminds me of a pub beer mat. It looks very formal so great if you’re the quiz master!
The book starts out explaining its set up ie where answers are, and that there are
easier, medium and harder questions and how they are separated/set up in the book. The book also explains how to set up and run a quiz
There really is a great selection of questions, some set out into themed quizzes, others set out more randomly, referred to as 'pot luck's quizzes in the book.
Theres is a good large selection of questions for all abilities and tastes and interests.
Having said that I would say the book is aimed more at adults.
It would be the ideal handbook for a pub quiz host or a family quizzer at home host!
I do think it will be even better as a physical book, to enable you to switch up/mix up quizzes if you want to. A physical copy would make finding the answers easier too. However, it does still work really well as an ebook too.
I’d definitely recommend this quiz book and am looking to more hours of fun with it myself!
It is something you can use over and over again. It is really packed with quizzes.
Perfect for family quiz night or for the host/hostess of a pub quiz!
The Collins Pub Quiz book features 500 quizzes of varying difficulty. The quizzes are separated into the categories: easy, medium and hard. Half of the quizzes are pot luck (mixed) questions, while the rest are themed. There is a wide range of themes so if you wanted to use the book among friends and family you are sure to find topics that will not only appeal to your audience but also be accessible. Roughly every 15th quiz is a picture round, these aren't simply identifying celebrities. Topics include, for example, hat styles, types of pasta and geographical locations.
I particularly liked the fact that the answers for a quiz are at the end of two quizzes along, rather than all together at the end of the book. This means that you don't inadvertently spot answers when checking.
The Collins Pub Quiz book is ideal for quiz nights among family and friends, or even if you just like the idea of challenging yourself. It would make a great gift for someone who enjoys quizzes.
This is great. Packed full of engaging quizzes for all abilities. The format is not ideal for ebook ( due to having to scroll up several pages between questions and answers) but I am absolutely going to purchase a paperback copy.
Great for family quiz nights and a decent mix of questions for all ages. There are some great categories outside of the standard pub quiz variety and while there is an expected emphasis on British culture , its not too strong meaning this book would work well in other countries, As it did in this Irish household. A great Christmas gift and I know its a book that will be heavily used here.
This was a perfect timing of a read for me, as I've been preparing for a quizzing endeavour and this book really helped! Lots of varied question topics and very well-written. 5*.
If quizzes are your thing then Collins Pub Quiz is going to be your jam, you can test yourself to your heart's content, and if you happen to run them, then there is sensible straight forward advice being offered, helpful for beginner's in particular. It is structured into two parts, and there are wide range in the scope of subjects and topics covered, from sport, fairy tales, musicals, flags and so much more, including some picture questions . There is variety in the difficulty levels, although you wou.ld do well to remember that what is easy for one person may be difficult for another and vice versa, and answers are conveniently provided. Everything is well laid out for ease of use, and I can certainly highly recommend it for those looking to test themselves, family and friends, and those looking to bolster their resources for pub quizzes too.
I have the others in this series and this one was pretty much the same as they others- good questions, range of subjects, and varying levels of difficulty. This is a great gift for any quiz fan!
A great quiz book. There’s a variety of questions on all different subjects and at different levels of difficulty. If you’re a quiz fan then you’ll like this one.
An essential for anyone running a pub quiz since this book has done all the work for you! The questions are set into three categories of easy, medium and hard (although even the easy ones are challenging enough for a good quiz) and contain picture rounds as well. There are over 10,000 questions so no chance of running out any time soon and the answers are not directly under the questions so the quizmaster can also take part, especially if you’re playing at home. This is a great book to really test the brain cells and perfect for anyone who takes their quizzing seriously.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in return for an honest review.
Really good book, laid out very well. I’m not sure why the answers are situated where they are, randomly put in different places in the book, but can only assume it’s so the quizmaster gets to join in the quiz too, without accidentally seeing the answers, in which case it works quite well. It’s sectioned into difficulty levels, and further into topics, so you can easily select a section which works for your group. Great book I’d happily recommend for any quizmaster, or even just something to do on car journeys
The Collins Pub Quiz book contains 500 quizzes which equates to over 10,000 questions including picture questions. I liked that the book is split into three distinct difficulty levels: easy, medium and hard so that you can tailor the quiz to the situation or test yourself as you work through the book if you prefer. The layout was very clear and I liked that at the top of each quiz it tells you were the answers are located. I thought it was great that the answers weren't on the same page as the questions as it takes away any temptation to cheat by peeking at the answers. Due to the sheer number of quizzes in this book, there are plenty of different categories covered so if you were to use this to host a pub quiz/quiz night you would be able to tailor it to the people participating.
I did find some of the 'easy' questions to be quite difficult so I'm not sure how much of this book I would be able to work through however I think if you were working in a team and had other people who could fill any gaps in your knowledge the questions in this book could be used.
Overall I liked the variety of questions and the clear formatting of the book however I found the difficulty level of the easy questions to be slightly too difficult.
