I had not read Part 1 of this series so I feel like I may have missed some context: there were some hints as to what came before but I think some more details could have been woven in to give more context and catch me up.
Having said that, unfortunately I did not finish this book. I found the style too difficult to get on with and there are some glaring punctuation/ grammatical errors that grated on me. It's written in almost a stream of conscious style as if someone is simply talking you through the book. This creates immediacy, and it may have been intentional but it didn't work for me at all and resulted in some mixed tenses which again drew me, as a reader, out of the story. Coupled with some clunky sentences and the OTT sex scenes, I found this a chore to read and really feel like it could have been better edited/proof-read to make things zip along.
The characters seemed quite cliched and annoyed me a bit too. The sex scenes are.... numerous and enthusiastic, even for a work of erotica. Bordering on unbelievable. There are some details and turns of phrase that just didn't work for me and broke the flow of the story. There's also a lot of telling rather than showing, which breaks the fundamental story telling rule of "show, don't tell".
Some examples include:
"the cafe owner was a chatty man with his customers and wanted to be that way with Paul"
"he just wanted something rustled up fairly quick.
'Just rustle us up something hot.. can you make it quick as we don't have long.'"
"Alice... adjusted her dress, before ... putting her seatbelt back on.
Paul managed to pull his jeans back up, adjusting his belt, putting his seat belt on..."
This is extraneous detail: there's so much like this that we can assume as the reader and could be cut out. Also it entirely breaks the mood of a sexy scene to have them both laboriously describe putting their seatbelts back on! There are other areas of detail in the book that could be cut, like the list of items in their full cooked breakfast and lengthy descriptions of rooms and outfits. This kind of thing breaks the scene and can be assumed by the reader as per the conventions of fiction
I feel mean writing this because I was given this as an advance review copy for free and I don't like to negate anyone's efforts at creating art. This just could've done with a few more drafts and passes through the editor to slicken it up and remove some obvious errors.,
NetGalley gave me this book to read and review and boy was if a slog! There were some good paragraphs but chapters should not consistently be that long. The characters felt wooden and unfortunately I won’t be reading more from this author
Fun and intriguing read that builds the relationships of both main characters and their world. The author has built a dynamic where Alaric is in love with and wants to support Annabelle but also has many of his own "baggage" to deal with. The story kept me reading and wondering about the characters.
fair amount of spice, i also could see this book becoming a movie or series, spice action, it was good.
My Dirty Little Secret (Part 2) by G. S. Foster was a good story.
Im going to have to get book one now and read it after reading this one.
Alice and Paul continue on their adventure (from the earlier novel Into the Moonlight), picking up a young woman along the way, who Alice befriends, and takes under her wing.
Paul becomes entangled in the darker side of life, thus becoming estranged from Alice and her newfound friend.
This leads to separate adventures and danger, the girls experiencing a romantic yet working trip into Europe, but leading them down their own path of danger, needing the help of her estranged husband.
I found this book very poor. It is badly written with wooden characters and totally unbelievable scenarios. I just found it boring and a little silly rather than erotic.
I sadly had to dnf this one. The writing style just wasn't for me and I thought the story was unrealistic. Because of that I found it difficult to continue reading. I was looking forward to reading this book based on the description, however it just didn't meet my expectations. I haven't read the first book prior to this which might've spoiled my experience a bit. However I did find it easy to read and understand what was happening. Because of that I think people could read this as a stand alone and that be fine as well.
This is a brilliant book. I loved the spice and for me, it was the right level of plot and spice. I think BookTok will go mad for this.
This story intrigued me even though I did not read book 1. I thought the writing was good and exciting. I enjoyed learning about the characters and the trips they took and people they encountered. I felt like I was a part of their adventure. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
