“Independence” is a three part story of amazing family women: Aino, Salme and Leena – who share their stories of facing challenges to gain their own independence. It shows the effects of the conflict of war, the ups and downs of love, and the relationship with a controlling father. Wherever the struggles originate from, the women each show their strength to survive, and in time, find forgiveness.
The story also takes the reader into the story of Finland, and its struggle during the war of 1918.
This first novel for the author really weaves the stories of the three women and the nation of Finland together in a beautiful, not to be forgotten page turner! The cover is really beautiful and powerful in its simplicity!
Independence tells the story of three women: Aino, the author’s grandmother; Salme, the author’s mother; and Leena, the author.
Independence acts as a memoir, dividing the book in to three sections (corresponding with each aforementioned woman) and is written from the first person point of view as if each woman is telling their own story with their own voice. I found this to be an incredibly unique approach and it sucked me in to each woman’s life. In Aino’s story, we read about a young woman imprisoned during the Russian Civil War in 1918. In Salme’s story, we read about a woman falling in to a relationship with an over-ambitious man that will eventually meet its end. In Leena’s story, we read about girl who, fed up with intense training schedules and her domineering father, seeks a different way of life.
It’s a multi-part story about seeking freedom; a history of and a love letter to Finland and to family. It will grip you with its mighty strong hands and won’t let you go until you turn the very last page.
