This does not feel like a debut book as it provides a gripping narrative that explores deep psychological themes and handling complex human emotions like trauma, guilt, redemption. We are introduced to the protagonist, Harper Jones, a Detective who has lost his partner while investigating a homicide. A standout character and one of whom I would like to read more about. With both the cases lying unresolved, he is wracked further with an even heinous crime perpetuated on the corpse of the homicide victim. A sleepy seaside town nestled amongst mountains Wolf Hollow starts getting a dangerous aura with the murderous string slowly progressing. The plot twists and turns kept me engrossed with a compelling antagonist keeping everyone guessing.
I felt that in between there are places where readers like me might find the pacing uneven when the plot seems to meander before building up to the climax. The distinct lack of background of Jones is another point that made me falter when he makes his conclusions although I expect these to make their presence in future novels. I will still credit Jeffrey for his successful handling of difficult themes while providing a compelling story.
Recommended.
An incredibly dark crime is just the start of the complex twists and turns which make this book so gripping. I loved the almost noir feel of the town and its inhabitants and really enjoyed the way the plot developed. The writing style is crisp and tight, meaning no unnecessary melodrama around a storyline which can stand strong without embellishment.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
Jeffrey Butler’s debut novel, “Torment,” is a gripping dive into the dark recesses of human nature, set against the eerie backdrop of the small town of Wolf Hollow. As someone who values well-crafted plots and engaging characters, I found “Torment” to be a masterclass in suspense and psychological depth.
The town of Wolf Hollow, with its secrets and shadows, becomes a character in its own right, adding to the novel’s atmospheric tension.
Harper Jones is a standout protagonist. His complexity and determination drive the narrative forward, making him a character readers can root for. The antagonist, whose identity and motives are slowly unveiled, is equally compelling, adding layers of intrigue and horror to the story.
Butler’s writing is vivid and unsettling, capturing the reader’s attention from the first page. The narrative is punctuated with unexpected twists and turns, keeping captivated. The psychological depth of the characters and the meticulous plotting make this novel a standout in the crime thriller genre.
Butler’s portrayal of Harper’s journey through grief and determination adds a layer of authenticity to the story. The novel’s exploration of human darkness and resilience resonates long after the final page is turned.
“Torment” is a compelling debut that showcases Jeffrey Butler’s talent for crafting suspenseful and emotionally charged narratives. For fans of detective fiction and psychological thrillers, this book is a must-read.
I highly recommend “Torment” for its intricate plot, well-developed characters, and the chilling atmosphere that Butler so expertly created.
This is a great mystery that keeps you guessing. I enjoyed Harper and following along with his investigation. There were several things that took me by surprise. I definitely would love to read more featuring these characters.
This book had me gripped from the beginning! It's straight into action, no messing about. I found the characters fascinating and wouldn't have minded a deeper dive into the serial killers' past. Lots of twists and turns on the way. Loved it, definitely recommending!
While this wasn't my normal sort of novel, I was VERY excited to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. Jeffrey Butler delivered. This was my first introduction to Harper Jones, and I wasn't disappointed. Twists and turns. A good mystery. Detective work at it's finest. I would read more of this. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read the ARC of this.
On an early fall morning, the sleepy oceanside town of Wolf Hollow awakens to a gruesome crime. Alison Newton, an innocent young woman who was senselessly murdered six months ago, has been dug up and brutally violated!! Whoa this book was a bit gruesome! But a great read!! It had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, a great who done it and a few crazy twists and turns. The storyline was interesting! I definitely recommend reading this book! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
