"We all know a George. He's the kind of guy who's brimming with potential but incapable of following through; he doesn't know if he's in love with his girlfriend, but he certainly likes having her around; he's distant from - but still reliant on - his mother; he swears he'll finish his novel one day."
This short excerpt deals with George's teens and early twenties so doesn't fully demonstrate the tag line but does give you a flavour of where book will go. Got to say the first chapter, I was a bit ambiguous about I didn't hate it but it also wasn't really encouraging me to read . The 2nd chapter I was much more engaged in, and it gave me vibes of both "A Man Called Ove" and "The Rosie Project" , never life out loud funny but dealing with the ups and downs of life in a bitter sweet way.
I'm now George-curious and will certainly consider reading it after publication.
I really enjoyed Greathead's commentary on family relationships and coming of age as I thought it was very realistic and relatable. Throughout this extract there was a blunt sense of humour which I liked. This extract was the perfect way to get a feel for the characters and writing style in what is a a very unique book and I am grateful I had the chance to read this extract.
However I wasn't a fan of the third person narrative voice and found it quite clunky to read. Additionally, I feel I am slightly older than the target demographic for this book so for these reasons I probably won't read the book when it is released but I would definitely recommend it to young adult readers.
This sounds great! I'm looking forward to reading the rest when it comes out! The plot is unique, and I feel this is a very real situation to many out there.
This is a promising start to the novel. George seems quite a sweet character whose childhood has been a bit of a rollerblading. I would to see what happens at uni and beyond!
This is the story of George, who has an older sister, and interesting parents.
This excerpt was about an earlier and important time in George’s family, and the beginning of this college years.
Greathead opted for telling George’s story in the third person perspective, which I found to be an ideal fit.
The craft and the pacing are excellent.
Because this was a sample, it is hard to discuss the potential of the plot and characterisation to their full extent.
However, I liked the characterisation, the setting, the dynamics between the characters plenty.
I had a few minor to medium-level comments about the accuracy of some facts and the use of language (these do not majorly affect the story, however careful and critical readers would immediately take note of them). I have let the publisher know what those inaccuracies are.
I am looking forward to reading the whole book. If everything is as great quality as in the sample. I anticipate the whole book will be a 4-5 star read for me.
It is modern and the context in the sample as well as the topics that I personally like like college life, film, novels, art, family dynamics were big hits for me.
Thank you to #netgalley, the publisher and the writer.
