A reprint of an adaptation of the first arcs of the 1990's X-Men American Cartoon. It's not bad, but it shows some wear around the edges.

Nearly identical to the original series, this introductory volume recounts the fantastic adventures of Marvel's X-Men in their battle against the Sentinels.

I enjoyed this Manga. It stays true to the original cartoon series, beginning with Jubilee and the battle with the Sentinels. It showcases characters and scenes that the X-Men Fox?Marvel films did not: Gambit, Jubilee, Genosha Island, etc. Some of the illustrations of fights were difficult to understand, especially between Wolverine and Sabretooth, but for the most part this comic was exciting and I look forward to reading Volume 2. Thank you Viz Media and NetGalley for the digital review copy.

While I am not a huge fan of the manga/comic crossovers, X-Men: The Manga still manages to reel you in. It isn't my favorite, and it will be unlikely that I'll be recommending it to every reader, there are definitely those that will be interested.

This was a nice way to keep practicing my skills at reading manga, with both familiar characters and familiar stories! I enjoyed revisiting these X-men stories from a couple of decades ago via new to me interpretations!

They did a fantastic job remastering this classic. The panels look fresh, the dialogue is superb, and overall it was a wonderful experience. This title brought back many fantastic memories of watching the original Xmen 97 cartoon. Awesome job!

Viz’s deal with Marvel has led to lots of interesting manga becoming readily available in English. And now, fans can get their hands on a restored classic. As part of their November manga releases, Viz will be offering X-Men: The Manga: Remastered Vol. 1. This 512-page volume collects the first part of the manga adaptation of X-Men: The Animated Series. And it’s the first time it’s been available in years!

With a variety of writers and artists handling this adaptation, the manga itself changes drastically from chapter to chapter. But that’s part of the charm of this series. Better still, this deluxe restoration looks fantastic. It’s a must-have for any X-Men fan.

a fun reimagining of the events of the original 1990's cartoon series. I really enjoyed a reimagined walk down memory lane. If you know any die hard x-men fans this will be a great addition to their collection.

For readers who have had their love of X-Men rekindled by the Studio Mir animated "X-Men '97" this manga collection is a perfect companion. It faithfully retells six chapters worth of the original series, with dialogue almost completely the same (one difference being the translation to consistently call Beast "the Beast"). Comic book fans are used to artist changes in a series, but some manga fans may be surprised at the change of art from chapter to chapter, for example the switch from Reiji Hagiwara to Rei Nakahara is pretty drastic in terms of illustration. And the illustrations do give as much of a 90's vibe as the "X-Men '97" show, which could either be charming or a turn off to readers who prefer more modern art styles. Yet the writing is consistent as it carries through the major beats of the X-Men versus Magneto and the sentinel attacks.

For those who have never heard of X-Men, this doesn't take the time to introduce them to the lore through extensive backstories or exposition one might read in American comics. Here, the exposition is limited to what a character would naturally say, so Xavier does give a little backstory about Magneto, but the reader has to understand the relationships between the already established team through their interactions because they don't need to stop and explain who they are to each other. Manga readers who ignore comic books might be tempted to browse it, and X-Men acolytes might be willing to learn to read from right to left for this adaptation. It has crossover appeal but mainly because it is part of a recognized brand that has endured in pop culture.

Loved this. A familiar story to most comic movie/cartoon fan, making it a perfect introduction to manga for those wanting to give it a go. As someone who grew up watching the animated series, had this been around then, id have got into manga a lot earlier in life. Definitely recommending.

I am a huuuuuuge Xmen fan. Annoyingly so.
The FIRST PAGE......... . (kinda spoilers ahead...sort of)

It was so classic. and JUST the mutant I needed to see.
The anime style of all my old school favorites is literally everything.
They somehow made Jubez more cute AND Gambit more hot. Two things I never thought I'd have in the same comic.
This story was basically the same one that ever Xmen fan knows and loves, but seriously.....I don't even care. It's still amazing.
It's still perfect. And the new vibes are everything.

Honestly thank you for this.

I'm always looking for manga versions of Marvel or DC comics which are really popular at our library like Deadpool Samurai and a great gateway for those who want to get into manga or manga fans that want to get more into superhero comics.

This didn't quite appeal to me. I typically love comic reimagining, but this one fell flat. A slow-paced story combined with simplistic artwork made for a pretty blah reading experience. It gave off the impression of having been dashed off quickly. I prefer the more detailed, complex manga style that's more modern.

A very nostalgic work that adapts well to the manga style. I just wish the illustrations were better. They are very aged in style and lacking detail.

I don’t think I was the right audience for this book. It wasn’t really my thing, but I think people who enjoy the classic stories/are seeking nostalgia will find comfort here.

Definitely a nice way to read X-Men if you're a fan of manga! It was a little bit jarring to see the different illustration throughout the book but other than that, it was a good look into the X-Men animated show through the manga lens.

VIZ Media provided an early galley for review.

In the late 1990's, X-Men: The Animated Series was a huge hit, taking Marvel's classic comic series and bringing it to an even wider audience. Just this year, the release of X-Men '97 as a follow-on cartoon series has brought that incarnation back into the popular consciousness once more.

This manga adapted, like Marvel's own 1992 comic series X-Men Adventures did as well, the cartoons from that original series with this volume presenting the first seven episodes. As a fan of the cartoon and the comics, I know these stories quite well. Since the artists change from chapter to chapter, there is a bit of inconsistency across the board. Some presentations were better than others, for me.

What is interesting here is seeing these stories again through the manga lens. The takes on these classic characters are fun and make me want to check out more Marvel manga. I also liked the character profiles included at the end, which likely helped new readers unfamiliar with the cast to get to know more than the stories revealed.

I'm not sure what came first, the animated X-Men show from the 90's, or this manga, but I felt like I basically read the first few episodes of the show. That's not to say this is bad, but I was kind of expecting something else. I enjoyed it, but I feel like most would rather watch the show than read this manga. I would only recommend for pretty serious manga/Marvel fans.
