I have thoroughly enjoyed this spinoff series from the authors Iron Druid chronicles and this the third installment wraps up all the nagging loose ends that have been floating around.
Al MacBharrais is still fighting the good fight as Sigil agent and has to negotiate with the national UK government when the Blue men start sinking yachts. This element of the story delves into people trafficking, drugs and all sorts of related dubious going ons. As usual Al is helped, and sometimes hindered, by his hobgoblin Buck Foi who is aspiring to be the most notorious and celebrated hobgoblin by performing an act of incredible daring.
Al closes in on the Gods who have laid the double curse on him, this brings him hope of finding an apprentice, retiring and finding happiness with a lovely librarian. The Morrigan who we have met many times in the Iron Druidverse wants to live a normal life and leave behind the death goddess gig - how close she gets remains to be seen.
We finally discover who Gladys who has seen some shite is and Nadia our favourite goth battle seer creates her own cult, raises the god Lhurnog - eater of violent men who is worshipped with cheese and whisky. So all in all a tasty end to a great series with a sprinklings of many a good dug/dog.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for access to this ARC, all views are my own.
The last part in the Ink&Sigil trilogy was a blast. I flew through the book and enjoyed every moment with the characters.
Al is still trying to find out who put those curses on his head and finally seems to make headway, but first he needs to find out why the Blue Men in the Minch target and sink certain yachts. Buck is trying to establish his own clan, but might have to get sober first. Meanwhile Nadia is creating her own cult around whisky and cheese. And, of course, Gladys Who Has Seen Some Shite gets to see some more shite.
Hearne managed to wrapped up this trilogy nicely. I closed the book and the only hang up I had about it was that now there won't be more Al MacBharriais stories to look forward to. But, I am going to re-read the series in audio format, since I am sure that the narrator Luke Daniels manages to make the final book sound as spectacular as the written word is.
An excellent finale to the Ink and Sigil series - I really hope Kevin Hearne revisits this series. It was a great and satisfying ending with all the characters including Al getting a satisfying conclusion to their stories. I loved the crossover with the Iron Druid too!
I've thoroughly enjoyed the Ink & Sigil trilogy, just as I enjoyed the Iron Druid Chronicles before it. Unfortunately, while Kevin Hearne's book series are amazing, it seems that he isn't as great when it comes to finishing them. Just as I found the final Iron Druid book to be rushed, I felt this was very similar. There were a lot of smaller subplots taking place alongside the man plot of who cursed Al and why.
Everything comes together as the mystery is resolved, however, it just felt as though Hearne was trying to tick too many things off a bucket list so that everything was resolved neatly. As a result, things jumped about a lot and felt a lot less smooth.
I was disappointed with the big reveal; who cursed Al and why. It felt like a bit of a cop-out in many ways, as it was too obvious. I did enjoy the way it all wrapped up with the type of hi jinks I'd expect from this universe. Despite not being as good as the previous two books, it was still enjoyable and worth the read.
I loved this series. Loved Al, Nadia, Buck, Gladys Who Has Seen Some Shite, and the characters from the Iron Druid series. I had a lot of fun and followed the crazy adventures of this groups of misfits and magic beings.
It was a lot of fun and, even if this is not the best in the series, I was very happy to learn about the causes of Al's curse and all the events that took place.
Very funny, fast paced, entertaining. A bit confusing at times but always a good novel.
I was a bit sad to say goodbye to these characters, hope to catch up one day again.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
