This is the first book I read from this author, and I was not disappointing. This was a well written book that was set during the 1970's. It was coming of age story filled with hope during a time of adversity. The characters were well written, and the plot was well planned. I really enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it to historical fiction lovers.

In this fascinating and complex coming of age historical fiction novel, readers follow Llayne Robertson as a coed student shocked at her homecoming queen nomination by the Vietnam Veterans Club. After winning the title of homecoming queen, Llayne realizes that the friendships she made were the real prize, but falling in love with a Vietnam veteran means the war is not over for everyone. Navigating this relationship and the repercussions of the Vietnam War, this new and exciting novel is a deeply emotional and personal novel about a young woman and her discovery of her inner strength and perseverance under fire. Brilliantly written with passionate characters and complex relationships, Linda Hughes’ latest novel is powerful and well-written as she brings the aftermath of the Vietnam War to life. With so much going on in Llayne’s life, readers will easily find something relatable or sympathetic in her character and will be deeply engaged with her personal story. The characters star in the story, and Llayne is a compelling protagonist with a complex background impacting her decisions. Charming, occasionally intense, and emotional, this is a fascinating historical fiction novel about the highs and lows of life in 1970s America that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.

Great book bout a young woman becoming the least likely Homecoming Queen and the Vietnam war and the veterans who help her. A coming of age story. A positive story of succeeding despite adversity. Loved the time period of the 1970's

This book was great. It is set in the 1970’s which I feel like is not written about very much. I loved the story and would highly recommend!

This is set in the 1970's, Llayne is the least like candidate for homecoming queen, but the Vietnam veterans club think she is the perfect candidate. sweet book.

I’ve recently been into acquiring a lot of books of different time periods especially those I didn’t get to witness firsthand. This was so fun traveling back into the seventies and that time period and I absolutely loved it! I will definitely be on the lookout from more from this author
