I am obsessed with this book!! Kelly-Ann Maddox is the most approachable, relatable witch of our time. I am so grateful for how open and vulnerable she was in writing this book. Witch in Darkness is like a sister quietly holding your hand in the dark, giving you the confidence to find your own light. This book is needed in the world right now more than ever and I’m grateful to Kelly-Ann for answering the call and showing up to write it! I bought a hard copy immediately for easy reference!
Very interesting take on witchcraft. I took a few ideals from it and felt more freedom with my personal experience with it thanks to some of the messages.
I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of this book courtesy of NetGalley - thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this!
I’m not a big fan of self-help books and have never identified as a witch, but something about the description of this book intrigued me and I love exploring new genres and learning about different belief systems. I wasn’t expecting any of this to resonate and approached it with an anthropological curiosity.
This was a really eye opening read; the open, versatile and completely non-judgemental approach to dealing with various life struggles was refreshing. One of the things that usually makes me avoid self-help books are the omniscient, condescending ways that advice is sometimes given - but in this there was none of that. Instead there was a space for interpretation and individuality. There was enough autobiography to know that the author was speaking about hardship from a place of unfortunate experiences - and, importantly, a real empathy that comes up through the pages (or the speaker).
If you’re curious, I’d definitely recommend it; it’s been very educational and I will definitely be researching further!
Witch in Darkness is a must-read for anyone interested in magick, whether you're an absolute beginner just starting out with the craft and going through a tough time, or someone (like me!) who's been doing it for a while but always interested in a new spin, fresh take on magickal practices for difficult times.
Kelly-Ann holds space in such a loving and supportive way while bringing the reader both spiritual wisdom and practical advice. This book reads like Kelly-Ann is with you, right beside you, holding you in sacred space as you navigate the darkness.
If you are going through a tough time, or just want to be prepared for when life throws you a curve ball, you can't skip this book.
I've been a follower and client of Kelly-Ann's for many years and I'm so glad I found her. This book is a true gift to the magickal world and I really hope that she continues to write and teach and share her knowledge, wisdom and light.
Witch in Darkness is a refreshing take on self-care, with a unique twist of witchcraft that makes it stand out from other wellness books. The blend of practical advice with mystical elements creates an empowering and engaging read. A fun and different approach to looking after yourself!
It was so wonderful to hear this narrated by Ms. Kelly-Ann herself! The introduction in particular is extremely personal, and the tone of the entire project feels like a deep conversation with a dear friend. I love that she recommends things to do when you’re feeling really good as well, so that you can prepare for darkness and navigate through it more easily.
She defines low-risk vs. high-risk witching activities and emphasizes the importance of alchemizing negative intentions into something more productive and positive. Anger is more useful when it’s converted into sheer determination, she says, reminding us to be ethical, even during extreme states.
Overall, this book is a gold mine of advice on how to feel better. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Special thanks to Watkins Publishing for lending me an advanced copy of the audiobook via Net Galley. I was so very excited to read this and it did not disappoint.
Unfortunately not my cup of tea. Not convinced by this genre of self help which seems highly stylised. The cover art also makes it seem slightly childish.
I am new to all things Witchcraft related....and this book was a first for me. I found myself absorbing many suggestions and ideas as I listened to Kelly-Ann Maddox give her take on self care, mental health and self development.
I was refreshingly surprised at how useful I have found listening to 'Witch in Darkness'.
I will definitely seek out Kelly-Ann's first book now that I have an appetite for her wisdom and natural style of writing.
"Witch in Darkness: Magick for Tough Times, Bad Days and Moments of Total Catastrophe" stands out in the realm of spirituality and witchcraft for its accessible and empathetic approach. Kelly-Ann Maddox offers more than just advice; she conveys a genuine understanding for those overwhelmed by life’s challenges. Maddox narrates the audiobook herself, adding a sense of personal connection and making the listener feel accompanied by a friend in times of darkness. Maddox effectively balances magical practices with modern sensibility. She provides rituals and spells while contextualising them within self-care and personal empowerment. This makes the audiobook both a spiritual tool and a guide for emotional and psychological well-being, which is especially valuable in times of crisis. Maddox avoids the prescriptive tone common in self-help and spiritual books. Instead of dictating rigid rules, she encourages listeners to adapt the practices to their own needs and circumstances. This flexible approach makes the audiobook's content more inclusive and applicable to a wide range of situations. In summary, "Witch in Darkness" is not just for those who practise witchcraft but for anyone seeking a spiritual and mindful way to face life’s adversities. It combines ancient wisdom with modern insights, delivered through a comforting and inspiring narrative. Maddox offers solace and practical tools to rebuild strength and hope.
**Listened to the audio book**
I listened to Kelly-Ann Maddox's previous book and adored it so was super excited for this one!
I really appreciated Maddox delving deeper into her personal life within the book. She is incredibly honest and does talk about some real hard hitting topics and her own personal take on them. She is very open and talks about how her Witchy-ness has helped her through these times.
As I always say, I love it when an author narrates their own audiobook - especially in non-fiction, and especially with a book such as this one, thats super personal.
