Oh my goodness! This is part of an epic work. I can only imagine that David Hume devoted a large part of his life to research in writing an authoritative and comprehensive series of books about English history from Anglo Saxon times onwards. This volume covers the period from Henry VII to Queen Mary. A time of turbulent and significant change, not only for the monarchy, but to the constitution and the role of the King or Queen in terms of control of people, Parliament and religion.
This volume is just shy of 20 hours of audio and is rich in detail. That said, I’m tackling it in short chunks. I’m finding it informed and interesting but there’s such a lot to take in. I’m not a historian, but I am interested in history and social change and this is a remarkable insight into this period. On the basis of this, I certainly wish to explore other books in the series, definitely one at a time, Its an amazing achievement with a unique analysis of the effects of all the changes. Narration is exceptional and holding my interest well.
Social policy, politics and history are some of my specialist interests and I have worked teaching the subjects at degree level. I find these audios really enjoyable and an easy way to convey these topics in an interesting way to an audience. Not for everyone but if you have an interest in history definitely give this series a try. The style of writing was a great match with both the narrators conveyance of the topic and the facts being covered
This fascinating historical book leads us through England's history from the Anglo-Saxon period up to the 1680s.
Very well written and narrated (I listened to the audiobook). A great book bringing us a blow by blow account about what was going on during this time period and who did what, why and when.
