Gorgeous art. Eno's style is perfect for a post-apocalyptic story like this, one that combines the gruesome and beautiful. The first volume of a graphic novel has to hit just right. Something has to be enough to bring readers back volume after volume, whether it is the characters or story. This manga happens to have both. Waka is mystery, even to herself, so it will be interesting to see how her character and story unfolds. The concepts of the gods attacking Japan is a good one, and the Anti-God Science Institute has enough weird things happening to keep you on your toes. I will definitely be picking up the next volume.
The art is what sood me on this, absolutely stunning it's giving attack on titan and chainsaw man vibes, I'd even go as far to say fans of junji ito would like this!
Action packed, full of love and enough intensity to keel it interesting buy not overwhelming, will be sure to get vol 2
Published by Viz Media and available November 19, 2024, After God is a new (to the English market) seinen battle manga, taking place in a post-apocalyptic Japan where being called gods wreak havoc. It's a decent start and I don't have much to say beyond it having Kaiju No. 8 vibes with the main character being a human with the powers of a god, so the story isn't particularly original, but the art is absolutely fantastic and I recommend reading it if just for the art.
Waka sets out on a mission to avenger her best friend's disappearance and death, searching for answers by attempting to get close to a God. Gods- beings that only appear to the human eye, took over half of Japan years ago, leaving most of the major cities abandoned and closed off. The only life there are those seeking to end it all, or sneak a glimpse of a God themselves. However, it is known that either option will probably leave you dead. Waka soon runs into Tokinaga, who realizes that Waka may not be what she seems. He brings her back to the Tokyo underground research institute and quickly realizes that Waka may be the answer to what the team is looking for.
The art is well done and the storyline captivating. There is a lot of action and a sprinkle of horror, good for fans of Junji Ito and Chainsaw Man! 4.5/5 stars rounded up.
No one is really sure what these enormous beings are that can subjugate and kill humans but can’t be photographed. Referred to broadly as “gods,” they’re anything but holy. And as it joins the November manga release schedule, After God will explore the beauty and the terror of these beings.
Tokinaga, a researcher for an anti-god organization, crosses paths with Waka as she is searching out a friend. But Waka has a secret of her own: she’s something like a god herself. Is she a danger to humanity, or could she be their final hope for defeating the gods? This series has a definite Chainsaw Man vibe, both artistically and tonally, and is a must for anyone in the market for a new, beautifully grotesque read. The first few chapters alone were packed with exceptional worldbuilding and huge reveals; if it can keep this page, it will be one to stick with.
After God Vol 1. is a fantastic fist installment in a horror/monster manga series. The art and story are intriguing and I can't wait to see what the next issue has in store.
In a Tokyo ravaged by the sudden appearances of powerful and deadly creatures dubbed Gods for their deadly aura and the inability to see them on film or in mirrors. We meet three travelers who chance upon one another in a place where mere humans do not belong. Each one of them has their own motives for seeking out the dwellings of the gods. One seeks to study them, one seeks to serve them, and one seeks answers to the tragedy the gods have wrought on humanity.
This is a great new story for fans of Kaiju No. 8 or Attack on Titan. The first issue is action packed, but it also brings a lot of heart with some very nuanced main characters. There are tons of hints at a deeper lore behind the gods themselves and the people who seek them out, for whatever reason. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next issue.
This was a fun read. It has unique premise, and good art style. Strong Annihilation vibe. But was anyone else overly distracted by the fact that the cord couldn't possibly fin in that eyepatch?
While I found the plot a bit confusing to follow, the art style and design is what really makes this story. I loved the art and the monsters and gods we get to see, it definitely helped to sell the horror aspects of the story. The plot itself I wasn't really sold on, but I am interested in reading more.
