I absolutely loved listening to this book. Clara paints a great picture while weaving the story of her MS diagnosis into the story of her career. It’s a vulnerable side to doctors that I don’t think many people think of.
I laughed and cried whilst listening to this book, but ultimately I ended up with a renewed respect for GPs who are coming under so much fire just now.

I’m really struggling with this book. I think the premise is excellent; I’ve read Henry Marsh books, his last one being his take on suddenly finding himself a patient rather than an outstanding but overbearing consultant. It’s difficult to imagine how awful it must be to find the medical tables turned and my heart goes out to Clara Doran. I find the narration dull and monotonous. And much of the detail is flat and mundane. I understand the need to balance home, work and health but there seem to be few ups and downs in the story. I’ve given up about half way through and may attempt the rest at a later date, but I’m not enjoying the story or feeling at all involved.

I have mixed feelings about this audiobook. Although I enjoyed the premise, I failed to connect with the Doctor. I feel that if the book had more stories of patient interactions, I may have been more engaged.

Thank you to NetGalley and thepublisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the concept of this book, the doctor's experience in the healthcare system, but for some reason, I just didn't find myself wanting to listen to the the story. Perhaps it's more the narration than the narrative itself, as I couldn't pin down why I wasn't engaged with it, which is a real shame, as it's a challenging story to listen to.

A must for every patient, doctor and medical professional.

It was a great perspective to have both as patient and on the other side as a doctor. Clara Doran really knocked this out of the park with the writing of this. (And the audiobook - I listened in this format and she narrated it so well).

As a patient with recently diagnosed Lupus, I know how frustrating being a full time patient and chronically ill human can be. Clara’s own experiences with MS whilst being a doctor was so well written and I heart feelingly thank her for sharing her own story. It’ll help so many out there and know it’s already helped me in navigating my own illness.

It was incredibly insightful and I’m so glad I got to pick this one up.

Audiobook Review: Doctor, Interrupted by Dr Clara Doran

I was intrigued by the premise of Doctor, Interrupted, but the execution didn’t quite work for me. The book felt like it skipped around a lot, making it difficult to follow where we were in the story. It jumped between her experiences as a doctor and her personal illness, which I found a bit jarring. It would have been more impactful if her time practicing and her journey with illness were separated a bit more clearly. That way, the narrative would’ve flowed more smoothly, and I think the emotional weight of each part could have been better appreciated.

Overall, Doctor, Interrupted had an interesting concept, but between the disjointed structure and the flat narration, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. It’s a reflective and personal story, but not the one I was hoping for.

**Listened to the audio book**

I really didn't get on with this book. I wanted more anecdotes of the patients as that was the parts was enjoying -rather than hearing about Doran's life specifically.

Doran narrates the book herself and usually I love it when an author narrates as it feels more personal, but Doran was incredibly monotone and maybe she should have hired someone with a bit more 'oomph' to narrate her book. Maybe I would have enjoyed listening if it had been more of a dynamic reader.

Not the book I wanted it to be.

This is my first memoir in at least a year, they are not normally my preferred genre but with everything going on in the NHS at the moment I thought it a good potential listen, I wasn’t disappointed and it prompted me to buy another memoir at the weekend while at a reading retreat in Harrogate, the writing style was an easy listen and it gave good insight into the profession

A very enjoyable and moving account of the impact of a life-changing diagnosis for a doctor more accustomed to diagnosing others' medical presentations.
Dr Clara Doran has just started her maternity leave when she starts to experience worrying symptoms which eventually lead to her being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis prior to her returning to life as a GP.
We follow Clara on her journey as she navigates trying to balance her home and work life alongside the debilitating effects of her MS.
The author shares lots of interesting insights into the challenges facing GPs whilst trying to come to terms with her own changing health situation.
The audiobook is beautifully narrated by the author herself giving it extra potency.
I am grateful to NetGalley and the author for an advanced copy of this insightful and powerful audiobook.
