Two Broken Girls (Detective Morgan Brookes Book 13) by Helen Phifer is so good!
On the banks of the River Rothay, as the first rays of sunshine hit the fast-flowing water, Melody Carrick’s body lies lifeless, red strangulation marks where her gold cross necklace used to hang. Detective Morgan Brookes is certain the killer was surprised by early-morning dog walkers, and she won’t rest until she unearths the evidence she needs to stop his next attack.
But before Morgan has a chance to attend the post-mortem, seventeen-year-old Paige Evans rushes into the police station, claiming her stepfather Alan kidnapped her best friend. He has an old wooden box full of jewelry that she believes are trophies. Morgan’s blood runs cold: Melody’s necklace is tangled up in the chains.
Two Broken Birls is a twisty mystery and such a good crime thriller. I really enjoy Morgan Brookes and her team. I like how the author slowly unravels the suspense and mystery and throws in some red herrings that had my head swiveling because I couldn't keep up with who was involved and what would happen.
I love this series and am looking forward to more. A great addition to the series.

Morgan and Ben are back to work when a young girl’s body is discovered. A teenage girl turns up to say her mum’s boyfriend could have kidnapped her best friend but it would seem this killer isn’t quite done!
Reading these books is such a comfort to me. The characters are so established and the humour and affection between them is perfect. Yet again another cracker from Helen. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This was another one sitting read for me. Admittedly I was stuck in a garage waiting room at the time, but I would probably have read it all anyway. In this book Morgan attended a murder scene, which resulted in her running around chasing leads, some false, some real. As always there were some lightheaded moments. The twists kept me guessing who I thought the murderer was! In my opinion, another great book in this series and I can't wait to see what Morgan gets involved in next time
Awesome detective series with complex plot and a team that are like family, with quirks, emotions, and all. I definitely want a Cain of my own! Series stays strong and fast paced, highly recommended.
Helen Phifer has done it again! I'm obsessed with this series and can't wait for the next book already. The things I love about the Morgan Brookes series is the short and fast paced chapters, they build so much suspense and I literally can't stop reading. The 1st chapter in this book is the POV of the killer which I love! The whole teams banter and love for each other is so sweet and typical Morgan always getting herself in trouble honestly makes me laugh a bit now because that girl... she needs some restraint!! I truly loved this book - thank you Helen and Bookouture for a copy.
Helen Phifer has done it again. Two Broken Girls kept me reading because I didn’t have a clue who the killer could be. If you want a really good thriller then you should start reading this series. Morgan is a brave and intelligent detective. Nothing stops her from pursuing the killer. I can’t recommend this series enough.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Another brilliant Morgan Brookes adventure from Helen Phifer. I love these stories. They are all so original and this one is certainly no exception. I was kept guessing right until the end as to the identity of the killer and I read a lot of crime fiction! The characters have become like friends their personalities are so well written. However long it might be since the last book, opening a new book is like visiting old friends. I can't wait for book 14.to hit my kindle. Recommended wholeheartedly if you want a really good read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
Another great Morgan Brookes book! They are getting better and better, and I've read all of them! Also please don't let Morgan alone EVER again - she is indeed a chaos magnet!
This time I was really clueless on who the killer was - there were so many shifty guys in this book - Bravo!
As always I really enjoyed the relationship between them all and finally Marc is getting kinda "normal".
Thank you Netgalley <3
A great read. I couldn't put it down. The story was excellent. So many twists and turns. I couldn't put the book down and I'm already looking forward to the next adventure
Brookes believes she may finally have a lead on the vicious killer terrorizing her patch when a young girl gives evidence that indicate her father is the killer. But on her way to apprehend him, a young woman comes running out of the woods, saying she’s escaped from a killer. And it’s not the man Brookes was about to arrest. Phifer’s fans will enjoy the newest addition to the series
Enjoying the Morgan Brookes series. Great characters and plot line. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing Good writing style... Look forward very much to the next great instalment. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
Another wonderful read in this great series.
Fast paced action which kept me guessing until the end.
What i love is the humour thrown in here and there which lightens what is often horrific.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Easy five star read.
Another great installment of this series. I find these so easy to read despite the subject matter and read it in one sitting.
Two Broken Girls is a fast paced suspenseful thriller that kept me reading long into the night.
Morgan and Ben are racing against the clock when Melody a teenager is found murdered .
Another girls goes missing before they can even blink.
To add to the confusion another teen accuses her mother's boyfriend of kidnapping her best friend.
The team is frantic and pulled in all directions.
Morgan being Morgan, trouble finds her wherever she goes .
Helen Phifer does her usual remarkable job of turning up the tension on every page that keeps you holding your breath.
I absolutely love this series and I will be first in line for Book 14.
Please don't retire anytime soon Morgan.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a the privilege of reading and reviewing Two Broken Girls.
Another quick-paced, addictive investigation with Morgan Brookes. With a horrifying murder and other girl missing, the whole team of characters I've come to love from this series are under pressure to solve the case.
Once started I found I couldn't put this book down thanks to the short chapters luring me into reading just one more. This series hasn't disappointed me yet which is quite a feat being 13 books in. It just makes me want to read more.
Detective Morgan Brookes is investigating the murder of a teenager, Melody Carrick.
There are no leads, until another teen reports that she suspects her stepfather kidnapped her best friend.
I love Morgan Brookes. She is a feisty, unconventional character with boundless energy and a love for her work.
This series has given me hours of reading pleasure, and I am happy to recommend the series to other Police Procedural fans.
Looking so forward to the next book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my
Copy of this book.
A teenage girl is found murdered and Morgan is on the case. With little to go on, another teenage girl reports her friend missing. And then Morgan stumbles across a girl who was abducted but got away. Are all the cases related and can the team find a suspect.
What a page turner! I could feel the tension as I devoured this book. The suspense was amazing- no hint of who dunnit until right at the end.
The best bit of this whole series is the believable characters. Morgan is great, her ability to get injured at every turn, her goth fashion and her love of books make her so relatable. I love the friendly banter and jokes with Cain. Ben is a great boss. He takes care of his team but especially Morgan. Amy was more vulnerable in the book. I love her wit and sarcasm! Declan’s humour is fabulous.
This whole series is fabulous. Highly recommend.
Yet another amazing book by Helen Phifer
They really do just keep getting better and better
I adore Morgan and the team I think Cain is fast becoming my favourite he’s just adorable.
This crime really broke my heart I cried and felt so empty. The way Helen writes makes me feel all the emotions and I really did with this one.
I actually couldn’t guess who the killer was which I loved I was completely clueless.
A brilliant fast paced thriller with an amazing team of detectives a shocking crime so well written I didn’t put it down and read it in one sitting!
Can’t wait for book 14!
When college student Melody Carrick is found strangled to death on a riverbank with her gold cross necklace missing, Detective Morgan Brookes is heartsick; she knew Melody and her mother from the cafe she frequents. Another student, Paige Evans, appears at the police station to report that she thinks that Alan, the man living with her mother, kidnapped her best friend and he keeps a special box full of jewelry remnants. Could resolving the case be that simple? After all, this is Rydal Falls which seems to have more than its share of murders.
Another engrossing, fast paced read, this is the thirteenth in the Morgan Brookes series. It is the fourth I have read and it would work as a standalone. I like Morgan and although she does often find danger, she also frequently is involved in some amusing predicaments. I also enjoy
the collegial relationships within the investigative team.
I recommend this book/series for those who enjoy British police procedurals, mysteries, thrillers featuring capable female detectives with amiable supporting characters. I have added this series to my must read list.
Intrigue and mysterious…red herrings and secrets…this novel by a talented author is a page turner. It is difficult to put down. The title is sad…the story even more so…the realistic characters kept the story moving quickly. This is not a warm and cozy mystery…this is true life…thanks Netgalley
