3.5/5 - i enjoyed it, but also skipped a lot of text because of lack in old english vocabulary. it is rather diffictult for international fans of the game to enjoy this book fully.
I really enjoy playing the game on stream so I was super excited to see a adaptation as the artstyle is one of my favourites! A great graphic novel adaptation of the game! A great starter for newcomers and a fun companion novel for existing fans.
"In partnership with Devolver Digital and Massive Monster, Oni Press proudly presents Cult of the Lamb: The First Verse - the hugely anticipated first official graphic novel exploration into the sprawling cosmology of the millions-selling, multiple BAFTA Award-nominated video game phenomenon that has Polygon begging players to "smash that worship button"!
In a land pervaded by cruelty and evil, the most innocent among us - young Lamb - was selected to become a noble sacrifice.... Their death would be the magical rite that would forever seal the darkest of the Old Gods out of our realm and usher in a new age of bounty.
So Lamb died...but then they made a deal of their own.
At the crossroads of eternity, Lamb was met by the imprisoned deity known as the One Who Waits, who revealed the falsehoods and distortions of the false prophets who rule the world and the Old Faith. And so, Lamb was given a choice: Enter oblivion as intended...or return to the land of living with unholy powers and deliver a new cult unto the Earth.
The Four Bishops of the Old Faith must fall. The disbelievers must be destroyed. And, as Lamb assembles their flock, a new master shall reign over all of creation. Praise be to the Cult of the Lamb! From acclaimed writer Alex Paknadel (All Against All, Red Goblin) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Troy Little (Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons and Dragons, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) comes a deviously delightful, heretic-smashing excursion into the borderlands of the worldwide video game hit that IGN calls "adorably demonic."
Collects Cult of the Lamb (2024) #1-4."
Every week when I saw this comic in my email I thought, I really want to read that... And now I can!
Thank you NetGalley and Omni for and ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
As someone who has spent many hours playing Cult of the Lamb and following the game development for many years, reading the story in comic form is something I did not think would happen when I first learned about this indie rogue-like. The comic, like the game, is a violent, bloody, story following a sacrificial lamb as they start a cult. However, unlike the game the comic gives a deeper insight into the lore of Cult of the Lamb that causal players may have missed, had they skipped through dialogue, ignored quests, or played the game for the combat alone rather than the story of the game.
The comic seems to fix this problem sometimes happens playing video games, it rounds out the story in an easy, understandable way that may be missed when focusing on what needs to be done next in the game. The characters are given more personality, and I felt more connected with the followers in the comic then I did in the game. Even the lamb was given a stronger personality in the comic compared to the game, even if it is the player that is mostly controlling the lamb's actions. It also gives some great hints and foreshadowing that fans of the game will enjoying seeing in comic format.
Not only is the story great, but the artwork is beautiful. I would suggest that the best way to read this is in color, as the black-and-white on many ereaders do not do it justice.
Cult of the Lamb is a graphic novel adaptation of the popular indie game by the same name, and it absolutely delivers on the charm that fans of the game will recognize and love. The graphic novel does a good job of exploring the lore of the game while keeping the whimsical yet dark tone that made the original so unique.
One of the things I loved most about this adaptation was how it balances the adorable with the creepy. The artwork is vibrant and full of life, with bold colors that really pop off the page. At the same time, it doesn’t shy away from the darker, more gory elements of the story, making for a perfect blend of cute and creepy.
In addition to revisiting familiar faces, the graphic novel also introduces a few new characters that add even more depth to the story. It was a treat to see these characters brought to life in a new medium. The pacing of the novel is well done and perfectly sets the stage for what’s to come, leaving you waiting for the next volume to continue the adventure.
Ultimately, this graphic novel made me want to jump right back into the game and explore more of Cult of the Lamb's quirky, eerie universe. Whether you're a fan of the game or new to the world, this is a fun read that serves as a great companion to the game and may make you want to pick it up too!
Loved this so much! Very true to the video game of the same name but fleshes out the characters and their intentions. The art is gorgeous and it really captures the mood and feeling of the game very well. I'm glad that they're releasing these as collected chapters too which makes reading them more enjoyable
I'm so excited to read more of it when more is released
With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC
I requested this ARC because I love the game. It's fun and quirky, so I wanted to see what a comic would be like. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I was a little underwhelmed. The art was fantastic. The color and linework were great and matched up with the gaming experience. The plot is where things felt a little rushed. Time jumps were frequent, and that left you feeling like things were being glossed over. It was in a rush to include the aspects of the gameplay that could have been more thoughtfully planned out over time. It needed to slow down.
I did like that we get to see who the Lamb's personality really is and not the Lamb that players choose to make him. I liked some of the little tidbits of backstory. If this was more fleshed out, it would have been better. I might still pick up the next volume just to see more of the art and see if the story improves.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC
"Cult of the Lamb, Volume 1" is the first graphic novel in a series, fleshing out the plot of the popular video game "Cult of the Lamb" (rated T for Teen). This teen/YA graphic novel is written by Alex Paknadel and illustrated by Troy Little. We start with the titular Lamb who is sacrificed by the bishops of the Old Faith in an attempt to seal out another of the old gods and keep them imprisoned forever. However, this god resurrects Lamb and sends him to create a cult in his name to grow his power. Lamb starts out looking for revenge, but eventually makes a friend and starts to care about his cult. Gory and dark, this will be a hit with teen readers even if they have not played the game. A recommended purchase for teen/YA graphic novel collections, especially where darker/horror novels are popular.
I played Cult of the Lamb when it came out, and when I saw there was a graphic novel for it, I sprinted to netgalley to see if there was an ARC. My faith was rewarded. The color and linework matches perfectly what you experience ingame, and the only thing I found that was difficult for the graphic novel to translate was the attitude of the Lamb.
Namely, since it's a choose your own adventure path, what happens in this graphic novel isn't what happened in my game! My Lamb was caring (albeit there was a willing sacrifice or two) and you bet your bottom dollar the first thing I did was invest in the tech tree so my followers stopped pooping everywhere. This Lamb may be canonically a little more uncaring than my Lamb, but I enjoyed the read all the same. It's a fascinating story, from start to finish, and I'm super excited to read the rest!
The Old Faith is gone. All hail the Lamb.
Cult of the lamb is one of my favourites! This did not dissappoint. The art is beautiful, and went well with the content. Cant wait to read more volumes.
This is a great addition to the Cult of the Lamb video game, tying in well with the game's story and play style. Better learning the personality of the characters, as well, is really enjoyable for someone familiar with the franchise already.
I believe that those who are not familiar with the game will also enjoy this graphic, however, not to the same extent. The plotline jumps quickly, as though propelling to be sure to include a certain portion of the game into a single volume.
I would have loved to see a slower-paced adaption, as there is so much nuance that can be explored in this world. Hopefully, future volumes will do this a bit more, both helping those without a required assumed knowledge and also giving fans a place to grasp a story deeper than is already presented in the game.
And it goes without saying that the art is absolutely stellar! I frame almost any given page in this graphic.
I haven’t played a bunch of the game, but I did really enjoy what I played of it. I’ll admit, I sort of blew through the opening sequence to get to the actual gameplay, so I was happy to discover that this graphic novel starts at very beginning of the game. I thought the embellishment of the friendship between Lamb and their first follower was a cute addition to the lore. However, between the start and end of this volume, I felt it lacked the definition to make the end impactful. I love the art and style, but there were some pages that I felt had too much going on which made it hard to follow. Overall, I’m excited for Volume 2 to see what else they will do with the story!
Thank you to Omni Press and NetGalley for allowing me to review this title in advance in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this story.
SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
This was cute and also gory. I enjoyed the art style a lot as well as the plot. I think I'm a bit confused on the difference between the Old Faith and the Chained God because I kind of feel like they're all bad?? But I could be wrong. I enjoyed the Lamb's character a lot though. Ultimate power corrupts and so I don't think they'll be good forever but it was nice to see how the Lamb really cared for Nana and didn't want to sacrifice his followers just to have more power. I don't think that will last long but it was nice while it lasted! I'm looking forward to more.
In a world steeped in darkness and malevolence, Cult of the Lamb presents a captivating tale that flips the traditional narrative on its head. The story revolves around the innocent young Lamb, chosen for a noble sacrifice to seal away the Old Gods and usher in a new era of prosperity. However, in a surprising twist, Lamb seizes the opportunity to forge their own destiny at the crossroads of eternity.
What unfolds is a thrilling journey of empowerment and rebellion, as Lamb encounters the enigmatic deity known as the One Who Waits. This encounter unveils the truths obscured by the false prophets of the Old Faith, allowing Lamb to choose between accepting their fate or returning to the living world with newfound, unholy powers. The narrative is rich with themes of defiance and transformation, making it a compelling read.
Written by the talented Alex Paknadel and illustrated by the Eisner Award-nominated Troy Little, Cult of the Lamb is not just a story; it’s an exhilarating adventure that challenges the status quo. The artwork is vibrant and engaging, perfectly complementing the whimsical yet dark tone of the plot.
As Lamb rallies their followers and sets out to dismantle the oppressive Four Bishops of the Old Faith, readers are treated to a masterful blend of humor and horror. This book is a deviously delightful exploration of identity, belief, and the power of choice.
Cult of the Lamb is a must-read for anyone looking to immerse themselves in a unique blend of fantasy and dark comedy. This thrilling excursion into the game's lore is sure to leave readers eagerly anticipating what comes next. Prepare to be enchanted and entertained by this remarkable tale!
Cult of the Lamb is a story about a Lamb that starts a cult to destroy the four heretics of the lands. The lamb has been bought back to life by an old god whose asked the lamb to start the cult to appease him. The story is fantastic, the humour is dark but it's very funny. I happened to play the game so if you've played the game you will love this. However, even if you haven't played the game you don't need to know anything to read this and it is an enjoyable comic.
This was cute. I really enjoyed the artwork and it was a pretty simple story to follow. I was surprised by how much the story actually drew me in and how emotional I felt over what happened with Nana. I would definitely continue in this series.
I am fully obsessed with the art style of Cult of the Lamb!
I’ve been interested in the Cult of the Lamb game for months now, but I haven’t actually taken the steps to start it. When I saw this graphic novel available for request, I thought it would be a perfect way to test out the material and maybe motivate myself to commit to buying the game. Honestly, I think it worked! Dark, creepy, and cute (art-wise, at least), Cult of the Lamb was exactly what I was hoping it would be. If you are at all interested in the game, or you’ve already played the game and just want some of the lore, I absolutely believe you should pick this one up!
Thank you to NetGalley, Oni Press, and Alex Paknadel for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A harrowing story of eldritch machinations, betrayal, and corruption has never been rendered in such a cute and cuddly manner. Cult of the Lamb Volume 1 takes the visual excellence of the hit video game's art and marketing material and brings it to startling life in comic form, an achievement only matched by the fact that the comic's narrative both faithfully covers the events of the source material and also expands it in ways that felt completely natural. The art and colors pop off the page, the characters have real arcs and development, and the stakes feel real. I've never been more surprised and delighted to see such a successful translation from one medium to another.
I've seen a lot of fellow streamers play this game, so when I saw this book, I was interested in reading it. Like omg, I feel so bad for this lamb-like he just wanted to live, he made his first friend, and just wants to live life to its fullest after he was killed for just being a none-beaver. So many sad things happen in this story that you just wanna wrap this lamb into a big hug.
I enjoyed the art. The story is interesting and a bit crazy. But there was an unnecessary verbal tic from the author that continuously pulled me out of the story.
