I enjoyed this medical romance with older protagonists. Emilia has relocated to support her daughter at university. Meeting Felipe, her colleague, evokes an unexpected attraction. Both are respected Neonatal surgeons. Emilia has never dated since her husband's tragic death. I enjoyed their passionate romance, mutual respect, and how their relationship heals them.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
This is a mature classic, there is the romance and the weddings and the tender looks, but there is also a widow caring for a memory and her teenage daughter. This was a lovely read, gently and sympathetic with a strong female lead in neonatal surgeon Emilia and her student daughter which was good. The book packed a lot of medical jargon in, which I skipped a little as it kept going long into the book!
I was looking forward to this story of a more mature couple, Emilia (52) and Felipe (55). The former a widow of 5 years, with an daughter and the latter a divorce of 15.
But somehow despite all the elements being there - this just didn’t work for me. Felipe was adorable but Emilia was irritating. The daughter Eva was more adult and more emotionally intelligent than the mother. I just couldn’t buy into Emilia’s reluctance to be emotionally engaged with Felipe when it was clearly obvious throughout the book that she already was.
The black moment was so false and obviously manipulated that it didn’t bother me at all - I knew it would be resolved easily. And it was. I didn’t understand why they waited two years to marry. I know from personal experience that once you reach 50, you don’t put things off uneccessarily.
It was entertaining and I enjoyed lots of it but it never really rang true as a romance between two fifty year olds. .
