This is the story of a girl who smokes and says shit a lot and her cute alien companion on a mission to save the world!

A cute creature will always capture my heart and Soma is no exception 🖤

Thank you NetGalley and Oni Press for an advanced easy copy of this book in exchange for a review!

This was a nice read, but it was also a forgettable read. I mainly enjoyed the art style, the plot was alright, but a little messy.

Cool story and twist on an alien invasion! Art was great and well designed as well. However, I felt that the beginning of the story could've been longer to showcase more of life before the invasion.

Fun and fast paced! "Soma" is a lovely little read that follows Maya. a comic book artist suffering from burnout, and a cute little alien Soma. Together they have to save the earth from an alien attack. The story highlights themes such as human connection, morality, and work/life balance. It's well written and well illustrated. It's a bit quick though! My only gripe is I wanted a little more backstory for the characters, which is a testament to how well they are written.

The art is lively. Those who enjoy the art style of Scott Pilgrim, Pany & Stocking with Garterbelt, and Dead Leaves will appreciate the work.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read an advanced copy of this novel!

What caught my attention in requesting this was the discussion of creative burnout and how it changes the relationship between work and style when your job is to draw. I loved seeing Maya interact with her work and her friend, I ended up forgetting the plot, so my reaction quickly turned into joy when Soma arrived. The conversations between Maya and Soma blended beautifully with the different art panels for perspective changes. Even though it was fast paced, I didn't feel lost or get super confused about what was happening. I'm looking forward to publication date to add this to my collection!

Requested this ARC initially for the beautiful front cover illustration, and was thankfully not disappointed!
Writer's blocked girl meets extraterrestrial being warning her of imminent death and alien invasion with beautifully drawn visual illustrations to match? Count me in!
This was honestly such a treat. Soma had it all - well illustrated, well-thought plot line, elements of surprise while also being incredibly heartwarming and funny. Would easily pick up other graphic novels by this author and illustrator in a heart beat!

Very short and sweet. Soma is about a girl who meets an alien on the cusp of the invasion of Earth. The art style and parallel storylines were nice touches and the characters were wholesome (I really liked Juu). This is a fun story for all ages and I will possibly look into more books by these authors in the future.

This was an incredibly fun book! The art style was very captivating and bright which made it extra engaging to read. It was a very typical alien invasion story with the element of an underdog human teaming up with an alien. I had a really great time reading this and would definitely recommend!

I loved the lineart, the color work, and the characters. It's a small thing for me, but I've never been a fan of on-screen snot on a page, and this graphic novel had quite a lot of it. It started off a little slow, but then it was a nonstop action thrillride to the finish, which I loved. I was so sad towards the end, but I understood why one charater had to bite the dust. Everyone was super cute and lovable, I don't think I ran into a character I didn't like. I'll recommend it to people wanting a fun graphic novel to read!

Maya is a comic book artist in the middle of a creative crisis. She's stressed about her deadlines and the payments are not so good. One day, she's trying to get over a creative block and trying to help his best friend to gain confidence for a date when a bunch of aliens invade earth. Maya joins one of the aliens to try to salvage earth.

This was a fun read, although the story felt a bit disjointed at times with the jumping around. I loved the art and the colours, and the story was fun and entertaining overall. I would've liked to see a bit more of the friendship between Maya and his best friend.

Soma is a interesting read. I like to challenge myself sometimes to read things that don't interest me based on cover/description and Soma is that. But under it all I enjoyed most of my time with it, even if it didn't blow me away.

The general idea the main author is struggling to write something is good. As someone who loves to write, I've went through that many times. However, the zanny weird story she begins to write is so over the top, and the humor a lot of the times didn't land for me. But the art itself is great, with some wacky designs I did really love (The little aliens!!!) but overall if want something a bit zanny and different, this one is pretty fun. A 3 out of 5.

Thank you to Oni Press, Fernando Llor and Carles Dalmau for this advanced reader copy.

I swear that Fernando Llor wrote this graphic novel specifically for me. As a writer and illustrator who struggles often with creative blocks, this book is so wonderful at showing how some of our greatest obstacles can produce some of our best results. Using the pro strategy of writing about writers block to get out of writers block is the coolest. Not to mention seeing how an artist would react in some… otherworldly situations was really funny.

Carles Dalmau does such a wonderful job with the art of this book. Such a gorgeous colour palette throughout and the most charming art style and character design I’ve seen in a long time. Soma and Maya are such an endearing duo and their personalities and their designs for each other perfectly.

Regardless of the fact that I’ve got an ARC of this book ahead of time, I will be buying a copy the second it hits the shelves, I can already tell that this is a comfort read I will keep coming back to.

Great for fans of who also enjoy the work of Bryan Lee O’Malley (like me).

2.5 stars

Eh this was fine but I didn't actually find myself that interested in the story. I thought Juu was a much more interesting character than Maya and I wish that the story would have followed them instead. I think that I just wanted more from this and more of an explanation for what was taking place and none of that really happens.

Maya is all of us, stuck in our own heads about our work and what we want to do. Stuck in creativity, and finding a way out of a block, we go on this adventure with Maya and dive into her creative solution.

Thank you Net Galley for this e arc. Soma is a beautiful graphic novel that shows the perils of burn out and what people will do if it’s there last day on earth. The art style is gorgeous and the writing is witty.

I can only imagine the inspiration I might feel if an alien named Soma crashed into my apartment while I was having trouble writing. Definitely one of my favorite reads this year!

This was such a sweet story! The cover had me interested as soon as I saw it. I love the color pallet used through this whole GN, it has some of my favorite colors and its just really nice to look at. The art is beautiful very well done.

The story was really fun. I loved that it was really fast paced and full of action. I loved all the characters and got really attached to them to the point where this had me tearing up while reading it. Maya felt really relatable as a character. It was just really overall great. I absolutely would recommend it to anyone who loves reading graphic novels. It's a great time full of aliens what's not to love!

Soma was a visually stunning, quick and fun read!

The main character Maya is a comic book artist struggeling with burnout and inspiration. Her best friend is nervous to go on a date and asks for her help. The whole world is suppenly is under attack when a small water-bound alien crashes into mayas appartment, but together they try to fight and save the earth.

I loved best the colour palette, because it is really atmospheric and and vibrant. Despite the dark story there is a lot of humor, both visually and in the dialouge and the characters are really loveable. I only wished Soma (the alien)'s struggle of having/wanting to fight and kill his own kind would have been flashed out more to give a bit more depth to the character.

i saw the cover of this graphic novel and thought to give it a try. it was cute!

🦇 i liked the fact that maya didn't like kids lol so relatable.
🦇 maya also was a comic writer which i thought was unique, but at the same time, i did find it a bit boring when we got to see some pages of her work.
🦇 the artwork was really cute!
🦇 the story itself wasn't too unique since it's a typical alien invasion story but omg soma was so adorable!
🦇 i think it's safe to say my favourite characters were maya and soma. we had a pov of other characters but i didn't really manage to connect with them on a deeper level but maya and soma's friendship was everything.
🦇 i do recommend reading this if you want a quick and cute graphic novel that's about alien invasion!

Maya, a comic book artist, is dealing with artistic burnout. Every story she draws feels boooring. Until one day the characters from a story featuring aliens taking over earth come to life.

This comic was a lot of fun to read. The characters and art style are very expressive and vibrant, and go very well together. The pop culture references were fun little easter eggs to discover.

“It's always one gig after another, and I never have time to do my own thing. I dunno... something truly personal.”

What I most enjoyed was the more philosophical tone from the start and I'm a bit sad we didn't get more of that. The comic swung more into full action at a certain point, and I found it quite hard to follow what was going on at times (though that might just be me).

This characters are all unique and memorable, and so lovable. I wish this book were the first in a series so I could spend more time with them.

I'd recommend Soma to people who love art, action and well written characters.
