This new guide from NetGalley contains tips and tricks for various social media platforms. Starting with an overview of the various platforms, it then presents dos and don'ts as well as general and platform-specific tips on profiles, book reviews and post promotion. A recommended read for all bookstagrammers!
This is a good tool not only for novices but for long time reviewers as well. I'm not a review expert but as someone who have been reviewing books since 2013, this handbook gave me fresh ideas on how to grow my reviewing platform and thereby, also helping the authors and publishers. My only problem is that I don't like maintaining a lot of social media accounts as I am a stickler to my blog, Goodreads, and Amazon. I have an 8-5 job with other equally important hobbies so making reels, Tiktok and YT videos would consume a lot of time from my daily schedule. But if you are someone with good time management skills and really enthusiastic about engaging with a lot of people across different platforms, then, read this handbook.
“NetGalley’s Social Media Handbook” is a useful resource for those just getting into book advocacy and also established book advocates.
The concise guide provides tips and tricks for each of the major platforms on everything from video and photo editing to review writing. There are also embedded links to external articles to provide a deeper dive into certain topics for those who want the additional content.
As a newer book advocate, I found all of the information really useful, especially the descriptions of each of the platforms and when they might be best suited to your goals or purpose.
In general, I find We Are Bookish’s guides and resources to be very efficient and easy to use, and this was no exception. It’s a very quick read that I’m sure I’ll reference many times in the future.
As someone who has been on social media for YEARS, I even found helpful tips in here. Whether you prefer being on a blog or TikTok, this little booklet will help you hone in on your individual needs based on what social media you prefer.
love this! It's hard to get find good advice for bookish content, and this covers it all! thank you!
This was a good guide with helpful information but seems to be geared more toward complete newbies to social media. One thing I liked but wish there were was more on is tips for image content on Instagram for book reviews. I read using a kindle and that doesn't make for good images to showcase a book that I have read.
Great resources. Some things I never thought of. Particularly finding my voice. Also I usually tag authors on glowing four star reviews but I will stop now and do only five star. For me a four star means l LOVED IT and I reserve five star for “I will become a book bully and never stop thinking or talking about it” so this was helpful!
Very helpful tips if you're just starting out on social media. If you've been around for awhile, there will be less to glean from this. Thanks for this Netgalley.
Really great overview of book related social media!
Probably super helpful for people, who are not too familiar with it or seem to maybe miss out on something.
It was quite helpful, looking forward to more such great advices <33
The tips are authentic and are carefully crafted based on the needs of different types of reviewer, blogger or author, which was quite helpful!
I have quite a new Instagram based around books and reviews. I am always looking for ways to elevate my Instagram and have previously found the NetGalley guides helpful! So glad there’s one tailored to social media now!
Great starting point for anyone setting up their online presence. I like how the handbook discusses several social media platforms. This will come in handy as I start to expand to other platforms. Thank you NetGalley!
Thank you NetGalley and We Are Bookish for this really useful guide! Overall, this is a clear and concise guide to different bookish social media platforms that includes a wide range of information and an appropriate level of detail. It is certainly a great resource for those newer to the book advocate community!
I really appreciated the advice on how to streamline content across platforms and the fact that review platforms like Goodreads and StoryGraph were able included alongside broader social media platforms. I am a regular Canva user but I think the introduction included in the guide is pitched at a good level and liked the fact there was a link to more information and guidance. The dos and don’ts (including the very important instruction not to tag authors in negative reviews!) were sensible and well presented.
I’d suggest two improvements to the guide which, for me, would have made it five stars:
- I think the guide could have discussed how intstagram is trending towards more video content and provided advice / encouragement for those focused on photos and captions
- NetGalley operates across multiple jurisdictions, but guidance about ad disclosures only addresses US regulations… requirements may be similar but a page giving guidance per operating region (including UK) would have been very helpful!
Great little guide! It’s really quite helpful if you’re just starting out on social media.
Thank you for providing this!
This is such a great primer for book reviewers on social media. I'm impressed with the visual way this information is presented as well as the breadth of the information covered.
Thank you NetGalley for this handbook. It is comprehensive and I will definitely be using the tips and checklists.
I love those guides, they are always so helpful. Thank you for that, I will definetly use some of those tips soon!
A really nice, straightforward collection of advice on using social media for bookish content. I liked that the content was really easy to understand, structured I'm distinct categories and contained links to articles with even more information in. Definitely great as a refresher for all current bookstagrammers, booktokers etc and for anyone thinking of starting a new account on a particular platform.
Such a helpful guide to using social media as a book reviewer. Newbies, especially, will find the content valuable. Highly recommended!
I have been struggling with whether or not to reactive my Bookstagram, and this handbook helped me see ways I can feel more successful utilizing Booksta/Amazon/Goodreads together.
