This was a nice little guide for camping. The layout of the information flowed nicely, from preparation for a trip to packing everything back up. There were a lot of great skills covered including knots, plant identification, first aid, what to do in emergency situations, basic campsite skills and more advanced backcountry camping skills. Added bonus: peanuts comics sprinkled through and character-created lists and guides. This guide did a great job of balancing humor and light-heartedness with clear and important skills and tips for the great outdoors.
I was expecting this to be written for much younger readers, but it turns out to be a pretty practical guide made to appeal to middle-grade readers, and up. With lengthy chapters on camping, safety, and outdoor cooking, the reader has the chance to earn "badges" upon accomplishing each new skill.
Schulz's comics are scattered liberally throughout the book.
This would make a great addition to any home or school library.
What a fantastic idea to use the iconic gang to inform the reader about camping. I could see this becoming a perfect intro to the great outdoors both to club scout and beginner camper young or old. I think it works because it add some comedy to quite a boring topic. Perfect illustrations and references and just the right length.
Thank you netgallery and publisher and author for this unique find
This really does a great job of tying in a guide to the outdoors with Snoopy, even if you can tire quite quickly of jokes about balancing on the top of dog-houses, tents etc. We get quotes and samples of comic strips concerning Charlie, Linus, Snoopy, stay-at-home Sally, and the rest. It's also intending, with the help of badges at the end of every chapter, to make a Beagle Scout out of us – how very appropriate. But this has quite the varied content, in all – first we find out the benefits of the outdoors, then work out why we're going, whether it's to hug a tree or spot the animals. We have a quick guide to the major cloud types, as an aside, before chapter two shows us how to get the best out of a trip to a national park. Then it's on to the hows and wheres of pitching a tent, and things like sanitation for the city-dweller copying the bear in the woods for the first time. There's knife use, knot-forming, compass skills, dealing with charging ticks and pesky bears – all you would probably expect from such a book, and all as I say very much delivered with the required style, clarity and humour.
Presented from someone who knows Peanuts and the outdoors life, and geared at someone who likes one but perhaps not the other, this is a very good option. It probably opens more canned worms than it should in mentioning foraging, but common sense ought to prevail – which the purchase of this would already have implied. It's a four and a half star effort, but bear in mind it's very much a North America-only volume.
Snoopy and his Beagle Scout adventures was a great way to introduce some new and old concepts to my girl scout troop. My girls especially enjoyed the campfire section and leave no trace section. They were able to work on their Beagle Scout badges as well as some girl scout ones. They loved the writing prompts. It was a great way to keep them engaged and show that they retained some of the information.
An interesting take on a nature book. Well done and kids will find it interesting. xxxxxx xxxxx xxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx
I grew up both camping AND reading Charlie Brown comics, so I was happy to read a review copy of this book.
While I enjoyed the references and information, I found myself often wondering who the actual intended audience of the book is. Do kids these days know and enjoy Snoopy? It didn't feel like there was enough "kid-centric" material for it to be a kids' book. Some of the vocabulary seemed a bit high-level for children, and the long paragraph layout seemed like it could be overwhelming for younger readers. But if adults and Snoopy fans are the target audience, then some of the elements seemed a bit childish or sloppy. For example, the photos of the cloud types seemed like stock images rather than a cohesive aspect of the book.
This would be a cute gift book for someone who enjoys Snoopy, or for a younger reader interested in camping.
Wonderful book!! The illustrations and comics are beautiful and the book is packed full of useful information. Love that this topic has been made accessible to all ages and it is always fun to join the Peanuts characters! Highly recommended for new outdoor enthusiasts and Peanuts fans.
A fabulous mix of camping advice and knowledge, intermixed with Peanuts characters and cartoons. A perfect mix! Love, love, love this book!
Plan to purchase! My brother was a boy scout, his son is 6 and loves non-fiction. I think he would love for Christmas.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Charles Schultz and Quartro Publishing Group - becker & mayer! for the opportunity to read the advance read copy of Snoopy's Guide to the Great Outdoors by Kristin Mehus-Roe in exchange for an honest review.
Published Oct 8, 2024. Approx 176 pages.
A great resource to use when you want to introduce kids to "the Great Outdoors".
I would recommend no using this book as the only resource as it is meant for kids and not super detailed. However, teaching kids about the nature using this book, under the supervision of an informed adult, is a great idea, especially since the book has a reward system with badges for each chapter.
The illustrations are very cute and pair well with the information, using the Peanuts team, which not only introduces the kids to the nature, but also to the wonderful world of Charlie Brown.
Loved this book! I’d recommend it to anyone, especially children of all ages who are interested in exploring the outdoors with supplemental learning and an adventurous challenge. Would make a great gift for end of school year accomplishment, birthday, and Christmas. Also, it would make an excellent enhancement to study curricula and creative activities for homeschooling, science classes, and scout groups.
I would like to thank Quarto Publishing Group – becker & mayer! for providing me with an advance readers copy via access to the galley for free through the NetGalley program.
The Story
The content is thorough and I think children will really enjoy it, whether reading independently or together, then have fun exploring.
Notably, the badges/accomplishments that will help them learn the true joy of being outdoors and have much to look forward to in spending time with nature with an enhanced experience. It's a neat way to celebrate the acquisition of nature facts and outdoor activity progression.
Lots of ideas for activities. There are many tips and tricks. Even speaking to the most challenging of situations such as changes in weather, navigational skillset, plant and animal identification, safety practices, environmental stewardship, along with craft ideas and journaling, plus yummy recipes.
It is culturally-sensitive for any audience, to not be just Western-centric, in the way it approaches a refreshing appreciation of nature without any untoward hidden agendas for politicization or unsupported messaging that would be disrespectful or incompatible for underserved populations around the world that live in off-grid circumstances as mainstay. As a result, I felt very reassured that I could gift this book to anyone and any library around the globe and not feel like I would need to qualify or provide additional context for readers. Plus, there were mentionables of various countries, so no matter where readers live, they can feel connected to the content in the book and not feel uncomfortable, questioned, or slighted.
The Writing
Very well-organized. Covered everything I could think of as an outdoor and nature enthusiast.
Rationales to support recommendations were provided and not overly complicated either.
Loved the comics, really cute. A bit of humor along with educational aspects that were attention-keeping.
I really appreciated the eye-catching stylistic use of easy-to-read fonts and color schemes to delineate chapter sections and subsections to highlight the informational and activity learning designation.
The glossary and resource section is golden.
Illustrations
The illustrations are adorable. Contains the classic Peanuts comic strips that range from conversational, informational, instructional, and mindful.
I am looking forward to receiving my print copy and gifting it to a friend for her children to enjoy.

Perfect observational piece on the American way.
That is a Snoopy eyed view, with the rest of the Peanuts gang on the outdoors, hiking, (rambling), camping and getting up close and personal with nature.
Obviously it is American-centric but for me this was always the joy of Charlie Brown et al. I am delighted the comic strip is still relevant available to a new generation of kids.
When, The Great Outdoors is said with an American accent we are talking about a vast wilderness and one that contains dangerous things and critters that put the wild into wilderness. So the prospective hiker or camp leader will be happy for the pages on paw prints and the dangers of lifting stones to show insect life.
I love the iconic picture of a dog lying on his kennel. Here he lies atop a tent with Woodstock and the rest following suit. Only beaten by canoeing in a dog bowl.
If you can get past the American comic book slant, which is a given as it is what it says on the can. This is both a funny and entertaining book suitable for all. Hopefully it will enhance all things ‘Peanuts’ and bring more fans to these enduring characters.
There are gems here that translate into a U.K. experience of camping and using a compass to tackle hillwalking and open moorland. The formation of clouds and lying on one’s back to find shapes in them is universal and there are pictures and names for them here.
Who doesn’t love toasting marshmallows and wieners? But I’d perhaps take mine in a hot dog - sorry Snoopy.
So much to enjoy here; especially the night sky and an escape from light pollution but while you can count on this book for reliable fun facts the humour seems to spill out when counting stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a fun read with Snoopy and the gang. It had some great tips along with the comics and pages for kids to take notes.
What's not to love about Snoopy's Guide to the Great Outdoors? This is a charming, easy to read book filled with great information for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. This reminds me of a scout guidebook, but it's told in a way that is accessible and the instructions are accompanied by drawings and comic strips of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Woodstock, and more. This would make a great gift for anyone that enjoys scouting, hiking, camping, and Snoopy. Loved it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this ARC.

🌟🌟🌟🌟
It's the Peanuts gang, of course it automatically gets a star.
Now the book proper.
Being the outdoorsy *ahem* person that I am... my oh my, there is so much handy information in this.
Will I ever use it personally? Let's just say i am not their target audience apart from the fact that I enjoyed the different strips and characters featured.
Many will find this to be a useful guide for their kids or a refresher for themselves.
As for me, should I ever wanna rough it out, I'll stay in a three star hotel.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Such a cute and informative guide on all things outdoors and camping told by Snoopy and the rest of the peanuts gang! I have never been a big camper but this guide was so informative and funny I feel like I need to plan a camping trip!
This guide is filled with fun tips, tricks, and useful advice to help anyone start on their outdoor journey! It also features lots of fun Peanuts comics that new and old fans will be sure to love!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Snoopy's Guide to the Great Outdoors is a delightful way for adults to introduce kids to camping, hiking, and nature in general. There is a lot of really good information, there are fun activity ideas, and the Peanuts theme is a delight. That being said, I would not recommend it be the only book consulted before heading out as there are some suggested activities that are inherently dangerous; for example, the author suggest bat watching, but doesn't mention bats are vectors for some really nasty disease, including rabies.
