A great resource to use when you want to introduce kids to "the Great Outdoors".
I would recommend no using this book as the only resource as it is meant for kids and not super detailed. However, teaching kids about the nature using this book, under the supervision of an informed adult, is a great idea, especially since the book has a reward system with badges for each chapter.
The illustrations are very cute and pair well with the information, using the Peanuts team, which not only introduces the kids to the nature, but also to the wonderful world of Charlie Brown.
Loved this book! I’d recommend it to anyone, especially children of all ages who are interested in exploring the outdoors with supplemental learning and an adventurous challenge. Would make a great gift for end of school year accomplishment, birthday, and Christmas. Also, it would make an excellent enhancement to study curricula and creative activities for homeschooling, science classes, and scout groups.
I would like to thank Quarto Publishing Group – becker & mayer! for providing me with an advance readers copy via access to the galley for free through the NetGalley program.
The Story
The content is thorough and I think children will really enjoy it, whether reading independently or together, then have fun exploring.
Notably, the badges/accomplishments that will help them learn the true joy of being outdoors and have much to look forward to in spending time with nature with an enhanced experience. It's a neat way to celebrate the acquisition of nature facts and outdoor activity progression.
Lots of ideas for activities. There are many tips and tricks. Even speaking to the most challenging of situations such as changes in weather, navigational skillset, plant and animal identification, safety practices, environmental stewardship, along with craft ideas and journaling, plus yummy recipes.
It is culturally-sensitive for any audience, to not be just Western-centric, in the way it approaches a refreshing appreciation of nature without any untoward hidden agendas for politicization or unsupported messaging that would be disrespectful or incompatible for underserved populations around the world that live in off-grid circumstances as mainstay. As a result, I felt very reassured that I could gift this book to anyone and any library around the globe and not feel like I would need to qualify or provide additional context for readers. Plus, there were mentionables of various countries, so no matter where readers live, they can feel connected to the content in the book and not feel uncomfortable, questioned, or slighted.
The Writing
Very well-organized. Covered everything I could think of as an outdoor and nature enthusiast.
Rationales to support recommendations were provided and not overly complicated either.
Loved the comics, really cute. A bit of humor along with educational aspects that were attention-keeping.
I really appreciated the eye-catching stylistic use of easy-to-read fonts and color schemes to delineate chapter sections and subsections to highlight the informational and activity learning designation.
The glossary and resource section is golden.
Illustrations
The illustrations are adorable. Contains the classic Peanuts comic strips that range from conversational, informational, instructional, and mindful.
I am looking forward to receiving my print copy and gifting it to a friend for her children to enjoy.

Perfect observational piece on the American way.
That is a Snoopy eyed view, with the rest of the Peanuts gang on the outdoors, hiking, (rambling), camping and getting up close and personal with nature.
Obviously it is American-centric but for me this was always the joy of Charlie Brown et al. I am delighted the comic strip is still relevant available to a new generation of kids.
When, The Great Outdoors is said with an American accent we are talking about a vast wilderness and one that contains dangerous things and critters that put the wild into wilderness. So the prospective hiker or camp leader will be happy for the pages on paw prints and the dangers of lifting stones to show insect life.
I love the iconic picture of a dog lying on his kennel. Here he lies atop a tent with Woodstock and the rest following suit. Only beaten by canoeing in a dog bowl.
If you can get past the American comic book slant, which is a given as it is what it says on the can. This is both a funny and entertaining book suitable for all. Hopefully it will enhance all things ‘Peanuts’ and bring more fans to these enduring characters.
There are gems here that translate into a U.K. experience of camping and using a compass to tackle hillwalking and open moorland. The formation of clouds and lying on one’s back to find shapes in them is universal and there are pictures and names for them here.
Who doesn’t love toasting marshmallows and wieners? But I’d perhaps take mine in a hot dog - sorry Snoopy.
So much to enjoy here; especially the night sky and an escape from light pollution but while you can count on this book for reliable fun facts the humour seems to spill out when counting stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a fun read with Snoopy and the gang. It had some great tips along with the comics and pages for kids to take notes.
What's not to love about Snoopy's Guide to the Great Outdoors? This is a charming, easy to read book filled with great information for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. This reminds me of a scout guidebook, but it's told in a way that is accessible and the instructions are accompanied by drawings and comic strips of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Woodstock, and more. This would make a great gift for anyone that enjoys scouting, hiking, camping, and Snoopy. Loved it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this ARC.
Book 210 of 300 ~ 2024
🌟🌟🌟🌟
It's the Peanuts gang, of course it automatically gets a star.
Now the book proper.
Being the outdoorsy *ahem* person that I am... my oh my, there is so much handy information in this.
Will I ever use it personally? Let's just say i am not their target audience apart from the fact that I enjoyed the different strips and characters featured.
Many will find this to be a useful guide for their kids or a refresher for themselves.
As for me, should I ever wanna rough it out, I'll stay in a three star hotel.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

1000 stars
Such a cute and informative guide on all things outdoors and camping told by Snoopy and the rest of the peanuts gang! I have never been a big camper but this guide was so informative and funny I feel like I need to plan a camping trip!
This guide is filled with fun tips, tricks, and useful advice to help anyone start on their outdoor journey! It also features lots of fun Peanuts comics that new and old fans will be sure to love!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Snoopy's Guide to the Great Outdoors is a delightful way for adults to introduce kids to camping, hiking, and nature in general. There is a lot of really good information, there are fun activity ideas, and the Peanuts theme is a delight. That being said, I would not recommend it be the only book consulted before heading out as there are some suggested activities that are inherently dangerous; for example, the author suggest bat watching, but doesn't mention bats are vectors for some really nasty disease, including rabies.
Firstly a keen thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – becker & mayer! | Epic Ink for the e-ARC of 'Snoopy's Guide to the Great Outdoors by Kristin Mehus-Roe.'
4 out of 5 stars.
This book was clear, clean and easy to read. I saw no errors, though I do question the smarts of including foraging without colour pictures or better description of the plants they plan on eating and what the big differences are between it and other, poisonous plants.
This is a good book for adults of all ages, but children should at least be always supervised by an adults, even having the adult teach them what the books don't show.
But all in all, the book was informative and charming. It's a bit of a read to choke down, so have plenty of time so you don't feel forced. Great illustrations, advice and even some cheeky jokes thrown in. Seeing all the comics brings back memories from childhood, for me anyway.
Who doesn't love Peanuts? Great book.
This was a cute and informative book to introduce people to camping. My only confusion is, who is it for? The Peanuts feels like it should be for kids but this was clearly written for adults mostly.
A cute illustrated book for every small and big adventure fan!
The guide is perfect for everyone who wants to learn the basics about camping and what to remember when you are on an adventure. Especially the drawings of Snoopy and his friends make the book even more interesting. The book itself has a lot of information but also some recipes and a lot space for own thoughts and ideas.
The book is not just perfect for Snoopy fans, but also for everyone who wants to learn something new or needs a guide for the outdoors. The combination of the cute drawings and the the very diverse tips and tricks make it a good book for beginners.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this EARC!
‘happiness is a warm puppy on a camping trip’
This adorable book should be mandatory reading for any middle school science class! Classic Snoopy cartoons are sprinkled throughout this guide to the outdoors along with ‘badges’ to be earned at the completion of each chapter. Highly enjoyable and a reminder to look away from our screens more!
Thank you, Netgalley, for the opportunity to read this book. I really enjoyed the guides and illustrations in this book. It is great for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts.
Excellent little book for beginners to the great outdoors. It covers a wide range of topics, whilst accompanied by peanuts-typical cuteness.
This book is perfect for folks looking to get into camping/hiking/ect, and if you have any little who might be going on their first scout camp, I highly recommend gifting them this book so they know what to expect.
It is for an American audience, so some passages are irrelevant depending on the reader, but the information surrounding the specifics is still immensely helpful.
Overall, a nifty little book, perfect for those wanting to dip their toes into this sort of thing.
I grew up with Snoopy, so anything related, I must read. This is such a cute and fun book for all ages.

This is a practical guide to camping and hiking from the Peanut’s gang. There are strips from the series in each of the sections and there are times when one character or another takes the lead. For instance, Sally is not a big camping fan. Glamping might get closer but Sally wants the comforts of home so all of her advice is geared to making the trip more palatable.
Snoopy, of course, advises his troop of birds including Woodstock. Charlie Brown goes off with his friends and each character plays to their own particular talents. There is advice on hiking safely as well as camping both in tents and in cars. It covers food and entertainment and all sorts of things that the experienced outdoors person would know. The book would be great for the novice or young camper or just the multitude of fans of the Peanuts franchise and especially Snoopy. Five purrs and two paws up.
This is the absolute cutest book, in my opinion. If you’re a fan of Peanuts and/or the outdoors, it’s a must read. Great for all ages, 3-99! Older kids can read it on their own, with parents, or with a scout or similar group. Younger kids can read it with adults and look at all the cute illustrations. The info can be simplified or expounded on, depending on age level. There are eight chapters and eight badges, each on a different topic. There are lists for outdoor etiquette, for camping essentials, for plants/ animal to observe, and more. So much fun to check those off and “earn” the badges. Heck, I want to collect the badges. Too bad they aren’t available as real patches! There are classic cartoon strips from Schultz peppered through the book. I think this would make a great gift for anyone who loves the outdoors!
