The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley is the first book in the Worldbreaker series. This fantasy novel tells the story of Lilia, an orphan looking to find the answers of her past in a war torn world. Kameron Hurley has created an incredible world in The Mirror Empire. The city of Saiduan and the lore of the people is extraordinarily written. Hurley truly transports readers to another world. The Mirror Empire is unique and clever. Hurley's take on astrology, gender, race and war is imaginative and interesting. It is a complex book that takes all of the readers concentration. if you are looking for a light read then I would save The Mirror Empire for another day. However, if you are looking to be challenged then this may be the book for you. There can be an argument made that Hurley takes subjects like feminism, gender politics and rape too far (I do not think the systematic raping of men does anything to further the underlying feminist tone of this novel) but that is for each reader to decide themselves. My main issue with the book came from the characters. I wonder if Hurley spent so much energy creating the world that she didn't have enough for the characters because they fell flat. This is an engaging, challenging book that will not be for everyone but I think it is well worth a try.
I tried to get into this book, but it just didn't hold my interest and I kept putting it down and picking it back up again thinking that it would get better.
Since receiving this book my interests have changed. Also time constraints means that I'm limited to the amount of books I can read. I won't be able to give this title the attention that it needs and deserves. Therefore I will no longer be reading or reviewing this title. Thank you.
