wow this book was so good. 🤩 I feel like all the twists unraveled perfectly and the writing was amazing. I really enjoyed the ending too. And the narration was great. 😊
4.5 rounded up.
A twisty domestic thriller with a little second chance romance, allllll the family drama, and plenty of shady characters. So good!
Premise - an elderly couple is surprised when they open their door to find their former foster daughter, who ran away as a teen, standing on their front steps with a four year old daughter and a horrifying backstory explaining the missing years. They take Riley in (again) with open arms, but tragedy has a way of following Riley… and all isn’t as it seems.
I saw about half of the twists coming, but I read a lot of thrillers and it didn’t detract from the fun. There were still enough twists that caught me entirely by surprise!
Wolfe’s voice in this was soooo enjoyable and the characters she created all 3D and interesting. I loved slipping into their world, even as I was grateful it’s not my own!
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Laura Kay Bailey. Bailey did such a great job! She has a very pleasant voice to listen to, performed a dynamic read, and created really fun characters (but never betrayed the text, just added extra color). I had such a hard time hitting pause - I stayed up too late listening and it was worth it!
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The beginning of this book felt very amateurish. I was pleased to see that as it went on, it did get a little bit better. It wasn’t particularly twisty, as you can guess the who and the why, but it started to get a bit suspenseful at the end. “Riley” was a decent character, but was pretty naive for someone on the run.
All in all, it was just ok to me.
I enjoyed the narrator and listened at 2x which was the perfect speed.
