having not read some of the books in this compendium book of short stories i found it didnt distract in fact it interested so much that i took a note of each book referred to after each short story so that i can buy the books myself to read
these stories were fun to read and i cant wait to get the books that they refer to... a good mix of authors and styles
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
I got this as an arc on Netgalley but it has been out since 2020. Yeah pretty solid sapphic novellas! Some stories weren't for me and some were. It has something for everyone I think. Unless you want your smut to have monsters, doors or forks.
This was a fun anthology of short stories for me. I've read most of the authors and books highlighted in this, and it was nice to revisit some of my favorites and to see what happens AFTER the happily ever after. This is a wonderful idea!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced digital reader's copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review!
I don't like to leave negative reviews but I do like to be honest. I'm sorry to say that this book was such a disappointment that I didn't even finish it. The bit I did read felt like it was just a selection of chapters (mostly sex scenes) chosen at random from different books, that didn't have any connection.
I was selected by @netgalley to receive an arc of this book.

After Happily Ever After, edited by Astrid Ohletz and Alex K. Thorne, is a delightful anthology that takes readers back into the lives of beloved characters from Ylva's popular lesbian novels. With contributions from nine best-selling authors, this collection captures the magic of what happens after the storybook ending, and it certainly lives up to my expectations.
The concept is one I adore, reminiscent of Karin Kallmaker’s Frosting on the Cake, which brought me immense joy as I revisited familiar characters. After Happily Ever After continues that tradition beautifully. Each story offers a unique glimpse into the lives of characters we’ve grown to love, providing not only closure but also new adventures and emotional depths.
I particularly enjoyed the contributions from established authors like Jae, Lee Winter, and Roslyn Sinclair, whose stories felt like warm reunions with old friends. Their ability to seamlessly blend humor, charm, and depth showcases why they’re such treasured voices in the genre. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the offerings from authors I was less familiar with, such as Alex K. Thorne and RJ Nolan. Their fresh perspectives and engaging narratives enriched the anthology, making me eager to explore their other works.
What stands out in this collection is the range of experiences and themes explored. Whether it’s the tender moments of the morning after or the complexities of long-term love, each story captures the nuances of relationships beautifully. The anthology can be enjoyed as a series of standalone tales or as a cohesive journey through familiar worlds, making it accessible for both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
Overall, After Happily Ever After is a heartwarming anthology that delivers on its promise. It’s a perfect blend of nostalgia and new beginnings, leaving readers with a sense of fulfillment and a smile on their faces. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to revisit their favorite characters or discover new ones in the enchanting world of lesbian literature.
4.5 Stars!
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what happens to your favorite characters after they ride off into the sunset, then After Happily Ever After is a delightful treat you won’t want to miss. I had such a blast reading After Happily Ever After! Even though I haven’t read all the original novels these stories are based on, jumping back into these characters' lives was something I would never say no to. Who doesn't want to read more of their favorite characters after the final page?! The collection is packed with fun and excitement, blending sweet moments, steamy encounters, and plenty of laughs.
I especially loved how easy it was to get into each story, even without all the backstory. Each piece had its own charm, and I found myself smiling (and sometimes even swooning) as I explored these “happily ever afters.” It’s a perfect pick-me-up for anyone who loves LGBTQ+ romance—just a delightful way to spend an afternoon!
Already thinking about the next time I want to re-read this book!
*Happily Ever After* is a delightful anthology that explores what comes after the fairy-tale endings in eleven captivating lesbian romances. Curated by a talented collection of nine best-selling authors, this anthology serves as a charming continuation of beloved characters and their stories. Each short story offers a unique glimpse into the lives of passionate lovers, fighters, executives, and explorers as they navigate the joys and challenges of maintaining love beyond the initial spark.
Readers will find an irresistible blend of humor, warmth, and heartfelt moments as they witness the characters settling into their relationships, facing new adventures, and deepening their connections. Whether it’s the magic of the morning after or the complexities of years later, these standalone pieces invite both new readers and fans of the authors to immerse themselves in familiar universes. From romantic mishaps to joyful milestones, the anthology beautifully captures the essence of love in all its forms.
The diverse stories within *Happily Ever After* not only celebrate the beauty of love but also highlight the complexities and nuances that come with it. With contributions from notable authors like Jae, Lee Winter, and G Benson, this anthology promises to whisk readers away into enchanting worlds where love continues to blossom long after the last page is turned. It’s a heartfelt reminder that the journey of love is ever-evolving, and there’s always more to discover beyond “The End.”
What if you enjoyed a romance so much and you can’t help but wonder what happened *after* the happily ever after...? Wonder no more if you’re a fan of these 11 romances from 9 Ylva authors.
This anthology, brought together and edited by Astrid Ohletz and Alex K. Thorne, features 9 diverse stories, each with unique characters and themes. All of them are follow-up stories telling us what happened next after the HEAs we enjoyed.
Full disclosure… I haven’t read *all* of these 11 stories yet. So why am I reviewing this now?
Well, mainly because Ylva was kind enough to allow me an ARC and I realized that of the stories I’ve read so far, while I think they would work as standalones, readers will enjoy them much more fully when they’ve read each one’s parent story. So that’s what I’m doing! Taking the chance to get into those I parent stories I haven’t read yet, such as, as I write, Cheyenne Blue’s Code of Conduct and the elite world of women’s tennis (which is excellent so far).
Now, that obviously takes some time! For now, after reading 4 stories so far, I can only enthusiastically recommend this super collection.
If you’ve read any of the parent stories, this features must-read follow-ups, which makes the collection must-read too, right?
This is a wonderful collection of short stories or epilogues for books that have previously been published. I was excited to realize I was familiar with most of the authors featured. But that didn’t mean I’d read every book associated with this anthology. For example, I have read several books by Cheyenne Blue and Jae but not the ones associated with the selected books. The stories can stand alone but if you’ve read the book all the better. I thought there was a nice variety in the stories as well. Only one, from Lee Winter’s had I read and reviewed previously.
I enjoy reading short stories as a way of finding authors that may be new to me. I love bonus epilogues and short stories featuring characters and universes I’m already familiar with. This curated collection has already helped me add a few new books to my TBR pile. This book was originally published in Jan 2020.
Book Review: After Happily Ever After (edited by Astrid Ohletz & Alex K. Thorne)
After Happily Ever After is a delightful and innovative anthology that explores what happens after the quintessential "happily-ever-after" in lesbian romances. With eleven stories from nine of Ylva Publishing’s best-selling authors, the book gives readers a chance to revisit beloved characters, while introducing new, fully-realized worlds. This compilation showcases a variety of themes—love, commitment, struggle, and joy—all through the lens of established relationships, which makes it both refreshing and heartwarming.
The stories are varied and imaginative, offering readers a unique glimpse into what happens after the initial spark of romance. Instead of focusing on the thrill of new love, the anthology turns its attention to the evolution of relationships—how love matures, and what challenges come with the passage of time. From lovers navigating career ambitions to others adjusting to quieter, more settled lives, each story delves into the layers of commitment, proving that love can continue to surprise and delight, even long after the honeymoon phase.
What makes this anthology stand out is how it captures the complexity of relationships without falling into clichés or easy resolutions. Whether it’s the slow-burn reawakenings or the daily challenges of navigating love in the real world, each story feels authentic. The authors balance humor, tenderness, and emotional depth with great skill, making each story a satisfying read on its own, but even more rewarding for readers who are already familiar with the characters and universes.
Some highlights include Jae’s contribution, which revisits characters from Under a Falling Star and Damage Control, seamlessly weaving the realities of post-happily-ever-after life with the same charm and emotional nuance that readers have come to expect. Lee Winter’s follow-up to The Brutal Truth is just as sharp and introspective, delving into how the complexities of power dynamics and fame affect a long-term relationship. RJ Nolan brings her medical background to life in the aftermath of L.A. Metro, where professional and personal lives collide in fascinating ways.
Each story can stand alone, meaning that even readers who aren’t familiar with Ylva’s catalogue will find something to enjoy. However, those who have read the original books will get an extra layer of satisfaction as they revisit familiar faces and experience deeper character development.
In a genre often focused on the initial stages of romance, After Happily Ever After offers something different: a celebration of enduring love, of commitment, and of the beauty found in the mundane. It's a love letter to the complexities and rewards of long-term relationships, all while being charming, funny, and highly engaging. The anthology strikes a perfect balance of offering escapism while also being deeply relatable, making it an enjoyable read for fans of lesbian romance.
Overall, After Happily Ever After is a thoughtful, heartfelt anthology that goes beyond the usual romantic tropes. It's a must-read for anyone curious about what happens after the "I love you" and the closing credits, reminding us that love—like life—continues to evolve.
After Happily Ever After is a delightful collection! The diverse voices and imaginative twists keep each story fresh and engaging. Astrid Ohletz and Alex K. Thorne have curated a truly enchanting anthology that beautifully explores love, adventure, and self-discovery. It's a joy to see the characters take on their respective journeys journeys. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good story with a sprinkle of romance! Highly recommended!
This was such a delightful read to get these extra epilogues of some great books I loved to read in the past. Highly recommended.
Total wish fulfillment for lesfic fans
If you've ever wanted a story followup of some kind done with your favorite lesfic couple or to have the focus shift to the secondary characters who shone in their own right in a story of their own, this collection is total wish fulfillment for 9 authors and 11 of their writings. Jae and Lee Winter have two stories each, and of those, one by each author has been previously released as a stand alone short story. The collection is a good mixed bag and best read one story at a time rather than cover to cover in one sitting so each story can be fully appreciated and savored. If you like the characters in a story you can find information about which book or short story they originate from following each story in this collection; that information is also handy for those who have read the relevant stories already and are wondering why this character/these characters seem familiar to you. The latter happened to me a few times as I read thru After Happily Ever After. They're all well written and satisfying reads; only one story (by Cheyenne Blue) left me wanting for the romantic pair in it to have their own book (which I'd happily read if it ever came to be) in order to have more time with them.
The collection is a great introduction to the featured authors as well as characters they've created in the past who needed more time in the spotlight, either as couples at various stages in their relationships or couples to be. If you're wanting a good sampler of lesfic writing either for a taste of a certain author's style of storytelling or to see what kind of story you're in the mood for, flip thru this collection. After Happily Ever After fits the bill nicely as do all the other short story collections by this publisher to date.
