Three couples, a mother and her teenage daughter, take a vacation at a luxury Inn owned by Jean-Paul De LaRue and his wife Renee in the mountains of North Carolina.
Jean and Renee are struggling financially and are forced to face the difficult decision of closing their beautiful inn they worked so hard to build. The guests at the Inn are struggling with problems of their own and as the story unfolds, the characters’ problems and secrets come to light and their relationships with each other are tested in more ways than one. Will they find healing in the face of adversity, tragedy and dark times?
We Are Made of Stars is a story of secrets hidden from the ones we love, betrayal, lies, heartache, forgiveness, and hope. The story also deals with the consequences of choices the characters make and how it affects those around them.
I enjoyed how the author navigated the characters’ paths through life’s challenges and their connections to each other. I like the meaning of the book title and how the star theme was woven through the pages.
This is the first book I’ve read by Rochelle B. Weinstein, and I will be on the lookout for more of her stories.
At the Vis Ta Vie inn, Reneé and Jean-Paul De La Rue face the daunting decision to close their beloved home for good.
They’re not the only ones going through a season of change, though. Their guests include three couples in crisis: Hollywood celebs Leo and Penny are spending their silver anniversary together while on the cusp of divorce. Lucy, a practical-minded therapist, and Henry, an astronomer with his head in the stars, are struggling to find common ground. And former lawyer and current stay-at-home mom Sienna and charismatic sports agent Adam look perfect but are hiding rifts of their own. Thrown into the mix are self-absorbed single mother Cassidy and her sullen fifteen-year-old daughter, Rosalie.
The stage is set for a week of betrayals, regrets, and shocking truths that can rend the heart or heal it. Vis Ta Vie—live your life—captures what it means to love through the darkness, and to find the light even after the magic fades.
This book starts as a slow burn. Several couples are attending a traditional week away at an inn. The cast of characters consists of 3 couples, a mother and daughter and the couple running the inn, along with their niece. It's a little tedious as the reader meets each set of guests as they arrive. And, I found it a little difficult to distinguish who is who. But then I immersed myself in the story.
It is clear pretty quickly that there is conflict within each couple. The storyline sort of meanders along with a few tensions gradually building. Then, ***BANG***, suddenly, it's like a runaway train derailing and the reader doesn't know which way to look. Secrets are revealed. Conflicts break wide open. There's near tragedy. Totally shocking! Every one of the 11 people at the inn has a life-changing moment happening.
In all honesty, it's over the top. Overly dramatic. Crazy. But, since I read to be entertained, this story is a success!!! I could not turn the pages quickly enough. I could not wait to see how it could be wrapped up. I can't imagine the author's brain activity while she is creating all this.
I'm sure there will be others who say the events in the story are over the top. And, they are. And there are some that won’t like or appreciate the ending. For me, it was perfect. Lots of excitement to keep me interested and entertained. And, an ending that made me feel good.
Since the title is We Are Made of Stars, it's only fair that I give this book a 5-star rating! The story earned every one of those stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.
Thank you @netgalley for this ARC! This is my 4th book by Rochelle Weinstein and by far one of her best. What an uplifting and moving story. I loved the way a group of strangers from all walks of life found each other and created friendships and a family. Each character in the book was unique and interesting with their own story to tell. each one with their own secret, or issue that they needed to work through and heal from. I loved the way the author was able to tie everything together and allow everyone to lean on one another to overcome their issues. This is a story about making mistakes, learning from them and the beauty and growth that comes with forgiveness. I love Rochelle Weinstein. She never disappoints in giving a remarkable story that has you turning the pages and pulling on your heartstrings. Loved this book!
We Are Made of Stars by Rochelle B. Weinstein is about a beautiful inn ran by a lovely couple who accommodated people from different walks of life --- a famous actor with his wife who were on the verge of divorce, a mother and daughter whose relationship was marred by a big secret that neither of them was ready to accept, a physically- attractive couple touted as Ken and Barbie, an astronomer with his wife who was a psychologist who felt disconnected from each other. The story explores themes like love, hope, friendship, betrayal, and healing. It’s an easy-to-follow story that keeps you interested from start to finish.
I really enjoyed how Weinstein brought the characters to life. The story had some great scenes, especially when all the secrets and pain were out in the open in electrifying, high - tension scenes. The writing style was simple and clear, making it a smooth read. However, some parts felt a little slow or didn’t have much action. But overall, it was still enjoyable.
Overall, We Are Made of Stars is a fun read for fans of contemporary or women's fiction. It was entertaining, heart-warming, and heart-wrenching read. If you like stories with complex characters navigating emotional pain interspersed with unique culinary experience, you might enjoy this book, too.
Thank you, Rochelle B. Weinstein, Lake Union Publishing, and NetGalley for the ARC and for the opportunity to share my honest thoughts about the book.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A week at a luxury inn reveals a host of secrets for the guests and the couple who own the inn.
Set in the mountains of North Carolina we visit the Vis Ta Vie inn, (Live Your Life) along with a group of couples for a week of relaxation. The guests include 3 couples who are facing marital problems and struggles (Penny and Leo, Adam and Sienna, and Lucy and Henry) along with a single mother and her 15 year old daughter. (Cassidy and Rosalie) The owners of the Inn (Renee and Jean-Paul) are facing their own headwinds as they confront their own financial struggles trying not to sell Vis Ta Vie inn. Like a "fly on the wall" we are privy to emotions that include hidden secrets, betrayal, guilt and the hardship of single motherhood and selfishness. Told in chapters of each couple Ms. Weinstein has woven a tapestry that takes us into the very heart of soul searching and the drama of pain. From the first page to the last this was a book that was difficult to put down, a book filled with twists and turns that focuses on the human element, you will not want to the miss this novel. My thanks to Lake Union Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Requested an ARC of this novel from NetGalley when I realized that this author wrote one of my favorite books that I read this year. February seems too long for everyone else to get their hands on this story.
The multiple POV were clear and concise and really helped to build the multiple character developments. The lengths were perfect, and the switches helped to deepen the connection to the story.
So many complexities of the relationships and the consequences of actions played out- a story of forgiveness, healing, heartbreak, fear. I couldn’t put this one down and needed to know how each storyline played out.
This author has officially become a must read for whatever she writes moving forward!
We Are Made of Stars is a multi-POV story that follows B&B owners Renee and Jean-Paul, mother and daughter duo Cassidy and Rosalie, and three married couples (Penny and Leo, Adam and Sienna, and Lucy and Henry) during a weeklong stay and Renee and Jean-Paul's property, Vis Ta Vie. Each family has their own secrets/hardships they're working through. As the week progresses, and more details of each of their lives start to surface, the interconnectedness of the characters comes to light.
My favorite of these is Rosalie's story, which is the focus for the last 15 - 20% of the book. These final chapters are beautifully told and are the best part of the book. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the majority of the book was not as wonderful of a journey for me. There are three married couples who are all having problems in their respective marriages, and I found this to be dull/repetitive at times. Of the three couples, I resonated the most with Penny and Leo. I was satisfied with their ending, whereas I didn't find myself caring as much about Lucy/Henry and Adam/Sienna.
I did enjoy the multiple POV narration. I think it was a smart move to not use each character as a narrator (Renee, Lucy, Adam, and Leo do not narrate). The author is a good story teller (this is the first book of hers I have read) and I generally felt engaged through out the book. This was a hard review to write because I enjoyed the book, I just didn't love it.
I'm giving this a 3.5 out of 4 stars, rounding down. I received this ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.
Absolutely gorgeous book. I loved how each storyline played out and how things that may not have appeared to be connected, were actually connected. Sweet, clever and beautifully written. Reminded me a little of Liane Moriarty
I always love the layers of intrigue in Weinstein’s novels! What do I have to do to become a character in the book?? Because I also want to take a weeklong vacation to go hike and dine with strangers and focus on self improvement, relationship issues, and my overall mental stability.
This story was packed with character development and a close look at the mistakes, regrets, and flaws we can rebound and recover from to become better humans. The daily dinner menus were such a fun touch to add. The food was almost an additional character. Another great book by this author!
I read this on the beach and it was a satisfying book to dig my teeth into whilst I was busy doing nothing. The storyline itself held so much promise but I found that as there were so many characters, I struggled to keep up with who, what, where, when, why… you get the gist! However, I did enjoy it so don’t let that put you off. I don’t think my brain was functioning properly with all the sangria - I shall do a reread!
This book was really cute! A group of people arrive at an inn in the mountains of North Carolina - mostly couples, one mother daughter duo, and all of the turmoil they are each facing in their lives begins to reveal itself almost from the start. Marriages are on the rocks, many of them are hiding something, several misunderstandings take place, and the inn’s owners, a husband and wife on the verge of closing the inn, are part of it all as well.
This almost plays out like a Hallmark Christmas movie with no Christmas. I wanted to read a feel-good book and this fit the bill. I hadn’t heard of this author but would read her again when I need a break from my usual thrillers and crime and horror.
This is hands down Rochelle Weinstein’s best book yet. The story is set at a remote but sophisticated country inn where multiple couples come for a one week getaway. It’s quickly apparent that each of the couples, including one mother/daughter duo, have some issues to work through and demons to face. But somehow, through the magical atmosphere of the inn and the kindness of the owners, each character comes out better and stronger for the week away. With amazing character development, sensitive but uplifting plotting, and exploration of age old questions, this book will draw you in from the first page. Weinstein has the ability to bring readers into each character’s internal thoughts and deepest feelings, painting honest, clear, and poignant human pictures. I can’t praise this book highly enough. I really loved it, and you will too! And now I just desperately want to vacation in the mountains of North Carolina. Don’t miss this book! It’s extraordinary.
I found this book very difficult to get into because there was so many different view points and the chapters were short, so it was hard to get to know a character well enough before it jumped to the next one. I found the mother/daughter couple to be the easiest to remember although I never felt like we got to the bottom of why the mother was so damaged, it didn't fully make sense, which was a shame.
I saw the twist coming too, again, that was a shame.
I quite enjoyed reading it as I liked the descriptions of couples coming together and sharing a holiday, the idea of them sharing a meal together in the evening, some joining in with hikes together, it had a nice sense of friendship, and I liked the descriptions of the food.
Another winner from Rochelle Weinstein! Weinstein has a way of creating characters that you truly want to be friends with, that you want to know in real life, they are so three dimensional that they jump off the page. I always love an alternating POV novel and Weinstein is a master at this!
This was a wonderfully done story and I was hooking from the first page. The characters felt like they belonged in this world and was engaged with what was happening to them. Rochelle B. Weinstein was able to write a strong story and characters, it left me wanting to read more.
This is a charming novel about 8 people coming to a special inn, owned by a unique couple, each going through a personal crisis. Their individual stories unfold amid the opulent menus that precede the chapters divided by days of their stay.
At first, I thought this was going to be very predictable, but as the story went on, I was impressed by the author’s weaving of several stories with a bombshell at the end which proved life changing.
I think readers will enjoy this lovely novel, full of characters, from utterly different worlds, connecting and growing in this very engaging book.
I have read and enjoyed several of Weinstein’s novels, and like the others, this doesn’t disappoint.
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this novel.
This book was such a fun read! It truly felt like you were there with the characters going through their problems like they were your own. I love the realness and rawness of this book, and the way all these people with different lives interconnect! The multi pov was a bit much for me at times but I also enjoyed getting to know each character personally. Overall I definitely recommend reading this book!!
Thank you for the advanced copy. Secrets, lies, and second chances are served up beneath the stars at a picturesque mountain getaway in this powerful novel about love and family by the bestselling author of This Is Not How It Ends. This book has so many restorative story lines.
