Once she got rid of the "men" in her life, his mother still was always working, rarely home, and left him to raise himself. I thought it absurd that she told him to "be a man" when his only examples were drunken losers. This story follows a small child who is failed by the systems when young up through his fall into the Criminal Justice System. Reading it was different for me than for John Q Public because of the years I worked inner city and adult jails. It should be an education for those not in the know.
