Absolutely cracking start which continued throughout.
As a thriller, it is well paced and excellently thought out.
Really intelligent, engaging writing style with superb characterisation.
I think I may have benefited more by reading the previous novel in the series as there are a number of references to it but it still works as a stand alone.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

J. Scott Boyd’s “Bad Cop, Worse Cop,” the second installment in the Black Forest series, is a gripping continuation that delves deeper into the dark underbelly of a seemingly quiet town. This novel picks up where “Black Forest” left off, thrusting readers back into the life of Jack Larson, a 16-year-old amateur sleuth with a knack for uncovering secrets.

The story kicks off with the mysterious disappearance of Casey West, a classmate of Jack’s. What starts as a simple investigation quickly spirals into a complex web of corruption involving local law enforcement and powerful criminals. Boyd masterfully balances the pacing, ensuring that the narrative remains taut and suspenseful throughout. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger, compelling readers to keep turning the pages.

Jack Larson continues to be a compelling protagonist. His determination and resourcefulness make him a character worth rooting for. The supporting cast, including Jack’s friends who assist in the investigation, are well-developed and add depth to the story. The antagonists, particularly the corrupt cops, are portrayed with a chilling realism that heightens the stakes.

Boyd explores themes of justice, loyalty, and the moral complexities of right and wrong. His writing is crisp and evocative, painting vivid pictures of the Black Forest setting. The dialogue is sharp and realistic, adding to the authenticity of the characters and their interactions.

“Bad Cop, Worse Cop” is a standout sequel that not only lives up to the expectations set by the first book but also expands the series’ universe in intriguing ways. Boyd’s ability to weave a compelling mystery with well-rounded characters makes this a must-read for fans of the genre.

Whether you’re new to the Black Forest series or a returning reader, this book promises a thrilling ride from start to finish.
