One of my 2025 resolutions is to DNF ARCs when they're not working for me rather than pushing through. I want my reading life to be more enjoyable in 2025, and for my overall ratings to be higher. I am DNFing The Plot Twist at 50%. The number of times someone looked at the FMC like she was missing something was irritating and made it clear to the reader what at least some of the twists were. It was overly convoluted and I didn't get any sparks between Will and Allie before they were supposedly just ga ga over each other. I also want to know why she was so insistent that she couldn't write a mystery when she had so many good ideas and why she just gave those ideas away. Why didn't any of her friends tell her that was silly? I felt that the idea that Jake was a villain mainly because he was cold and looked villainous was a bit juvenile and adding the SA subplot was abrupt and intense.

When I say there was a plot twist, there was a plot twist! The story flowed together really well, the characters were relatable and easy to love!

I really found the plot of this book interesting so I decided to give it a try and the whole concept of two authors switching genres was very interesting. But I was looking forward to seeing how the romance unfolds and unfortunately, it was underwhelming. And I found Allie to be a bit annoying and immature too. I felt like I didn't know Will very well which made it difficult for me to connect with the characters tbh. The execution and pacing also fell flat. There were some fun scenes and the banter was good too but I had a hard time finishing this book due to underdeveloped characters and some inconsistencies.

I received an ARC from Nethalley in exchange of an honest review

What a ride this book was!
To be honest, I loved it, and for me, it deserves five stars for its uniqueness.

The Plot Twist follows Allie and Martin, two renowned writers who have lost their inspiration. Struggling with writer’s block and looming deadlines, they meet at a party and decide to swap plot ideas in hopes of reigniting their creativity.
Now, I know what you might be thinking—these two are bound to fall for each other, right? But let me tell you, this story is not what you expect. What if Martin isn’t even the love interest at all? You’ll have to read it to uncover the surprises, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The Plot Twist is a rom-com, yes, but it’s so much more than that. It delves into themes of family, friendship, grief, and the struggle to meet expectations. What I adored about this book is that it didn’t follow the typical rom-com formula. Instead, it was layered, rich, and eventful, steering clear of predictable tropes and keeping the narrative fresh and engaging. While I found the twist slightly predictable, it didn’t take away from the charm or enjoyment of the story.

I am incredibly grateful to Eleanor Goymer, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

I'll be honest, you lost me when the dedication was a Taylor Swift lyrics. It didn't get much better either.
It's a no from me.

First I’d like to thank the author and Netgalley for the arc of this book, I’m very thankful for the chance to read this story! Now for the review. I liked the prose of the book, which is what made me want to apply for the arc of the book in the first place, and although the prologue and first few chapters of the book were a bit slow, the story definitely picks up. The story contains a handful of likable characters and a teaspoon full of unlikeable ones, all making the story what it is. I do have a few critics though. While the author does a good job of building up the plot and the friendship with Allie and Martin, I do feel as if the story is lacking more sweet moments and the build up to the relationship of Allie and Will and I found myself wishing for more of those as i read the story. Secondly, the main character, Allie, got on my nerves at various moments in the story. While I know making mistakes is part of being human, I feel as if Allie looks the wrong choice in the face and decides to make it anyway, resulting in her regretting her choices even though they were something that could have been prevented and pitying herself. Despite all of this, this book still provides an interesting story to get lost in.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book, the blurb had me really intrigued and I did enjoy some aspects. I found the pace a little off and really struggled to get into the book properly, there wasn’t that much of a build up with the “big bad” and I wasn’t sure if there were just a few too many plot lines for it to feel fully cohesive.

Witty and adorable. Speedy read with a fun premise. I just can't help but to compare it to another beach read to which it bore a lot of similarities and left me underwhelmed. The romance needed more screen time to blossom and the overall story just a bit more polish!

3 stars!
This wasn't a bad book, but it also wasn't the best. I can't say anything bad about it, but I just feel it wasn't something special and I couldn't relate to the characters - that may have been because it was written in third person, which I'm not the biggest fan of. I enjoyed reading it, but I've finished it yesterday, and I'm already struggling to remember the plot.
Allie was a little bit annoying, and it was quite frustrating how she would keep so many secrets. Then when her secrets got out she was surprised, even though her best friend kept telling her to come clean.
I liked the friendship she developed with Martin though, and Will seemed like a great character as well.

When a book goes from just romance to include comedy, I'm hooked! The Plot Twist does just that. Outstanding characters and witty banter made it a fun read. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

This book has quite a slow pace. But once you get going it’s quite an enjoyable read. Not what I thought it would be but an ok read.

For a book called The Plot Twist, you’d think the plot twist would be… well, twisty. Instead, it’s as obvious as spotting a cat eyeing an open tuna can. But you know what? That’s okay, because sometimes the best stories are the ones where you know what’s coming and still enjoy the ride.

Allie Edwards is a romcom writer you can’t help but root for—likable, messy, and so relatable you’ll probably cringe a little remembering your own questionable decisions. Her unlikely friendship with Martin, the grumpy dinosaur of the publishing world, is the true heart of the book. It’s like watching a sitcom duo that shouldn’t work but absolutely does.

Then there’s Will, the dreamy caterer who shows up just in time to fill Allie’s romantic void and add some much-needed heat to her manuscript. Sure, he’s predictable, but he’s also so charming you won’t mind. It’s like being handed a warm slice of cake—familiar, sweet, and you’re definitely not complaining.

I especially loved how the book dives into the chaos of writing: the looming deadlines, the blank pages, and the desperate search for inspiration.

All in all, The Plot Twist is a quick, cute read perfect for when you need a break from the heavy stuff. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s like a good romcom movie—you’ll laugh, you’ll swoon, and you might roll your eyes a little, but you’ll be glad you picked it up.

The summary was sooo promising! I was excited to read this one but unfortunately, it was not for me! It started slow (I almost gave up at 30%) and I struggled to connect to the MC. Thank you Net Galley for the ARC!

The plot of this book sounded really cute, but was poorly executed. I would’ve had an easier time believing they were teens rather than in their 30s. Angie is the best character in the entire story. I barely feel like I know MMC, and Martin doesn’t know how to romance his own wife??? please. I would’ve DNFed if this wasn’t an arc, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

Thank you one more chaperone for the arc

I don’t know how to rate this, the first 30-40 ish percentage did not even have romance in it, it was more like setting the plot and the story but to me the characters were not really a couple, it felt more like they are friends, and this feeling stayed with me until the end of the book
It is fats paced and it’s easy to read but im kinda bummed

It took me a while to get into this one and although well written the romance angle wasn’t quite enough for me. The characters were brilliantly brought to life and engaging but I would have liked the relationship between will and Allie to have had more air time. They are such brilliant characters and their relationship had so much potential but it was all a bit too easy. All in all it was a good read but fell slightly short of my expectations.

not sure what i read. it didn’t feel like a romance book at all. they barely interacted and it felt like there wasn’t any plot. it was a bit tough to read unfortunately. i felt like we didn’t really get to know who will was.

thanks netgalley for the advanced copy!

Thank you to Netgalley and Harper UK for the e-arc!

Unfortunately, this book just didn't hit for me. I got about 40% in and it just felt like it was trying to be Beach Read but funny. I think the premise is really cute but since I've already read Beach Read, which is pretty dang similar, it just felt unoriginal. It's also less romancey and more like a litfic/contemporary in my opinion. I didn't really get that classic romance novel vibe from it, which is critical.

I wouldn't write this book off entirely, I'm sure it will resonate with its target audience! I am just not that audience, unfortunately. I did end up DNFing this book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of The Plot Twist in exchange for an honest review.

I was attracted to the cover on this one and giving the tag line, “their love story is a work in progress”. I thought I was getting into a romcom, but unfortunately for me, this was a miss in the romance department, and mismatched to those expectations.

Allie is our main protagonist, a romance writer who is struggling with writer’s block. There is a lot about that throughout the book and the stresses of not having a manuscript ready.

She sets out to find some “inspiration”, which happens between her love interest, Will, and her new writing partner, Martin, who finds himself in a similar writing block situation.

I appreciated the scenes with Martin and the writing banter between them. I wish there was more of that.

The story gets a little thrown off with a side conflict with Allie’s editor and another dude at the publishing house that she doesn’t like. I could have done without that story in exchange for more interactions with Will.

I’m not categorizing this one as romance because there was little of that. Will, has only a handful of scenes and their first intimate action happens off page! There was little chemistry with him and all we really know about him is that “he’s hot” and has a forearm tattoo.

The main conflict falls into the miscommunication troupe, which is my least favorite because it frustrates me so much! I struggled with Allie’s decisions.

Overall, this ended up slower for me because I was expecting romance and a reason to turn the pages, and this lacked the focus on that part, in my opinion.

If you like books with zero spice and relate to writing woes, this might work for you, but I wouldn’t recommend if you’re seeking a traditional romance novel. This is more so contemporary or chick lit.

3.8- 4 ⭐️, It was kinda a little slow paced for a short book.
Did take me a few days to get into it but I flew through the last 25%. There was a lot going on at once, kinda confusing at times, the fmc was pretty immature so that was off putting, found it hard to connect with Allie.
I also would’ve preferred more interaction with the two mc’s but there was a lot going on so I felt that area could’ve had more. Developed them more together would’ve been nice. It was nice like she had the good relationship with the other author but I would’ve loved if maybe another 3/4 chapters to just focus on building the relationship with the mc’s.
