I see the potential in this book however i believe it is just not for me. Therefore I did not finish book and I stopped at 48%. I couldn’t get immersed into the story. The whole thing just felt like a long and drawn out synopsis. That being said the plot is there and I imagine would be enjoyable if you like your romance books in 3rd person.

Whenever I see a romance book about authors or a publishing agency, I can’t resist picking it up. While this book started off slow for me, by the halfway mark, I was hooked.

Allie is a romance author battling the worst writer's block, with an extended deadline looming over her. If she doesn’t finish her book on time, she’ll face some serious consequences. At a work function, she meets Martin, an older crime author facing a similar creative struggle. After another chance meeting, they come up with a plan to help each other break through their blocks.

At the same function, Allie also meets Will, a sexy waiter she feels an instant attraction to. As her relationship with Will deepens, she begins to realize that her stagnant life may have been the source of her writer’s block. The passion and excitement she experiences with Will unlock her creativity, allowing her to write again.

I loved the sweet and supportive dynamic between Allie and Martin—they were exactly what each other needed. However, some of the interactions with Will felt a little confusing, even though the resolution played out as expected. I also enjoyed Allie’s friendships with Jess and Verity, which added warmth to the story. While the overall plot was enjoyable, it was quite predictable, and at times, the background elements felt a bit too busy.

If you’re looking for a closed-door romance with a touch of secrecy, I’d definitely recommend giving this book a try.

Thank you, NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, and Eleanor Goymer, for allowing me to review this early copy of The Plot Twist.

3.5/5 Stars

This was a sweet read but not my favorite. It did have me hooked in the beginning but I seem to have lost interest. What I did like was the predictability of the book. I knew what was going to come and that felt like a level of comfort. Allie and Will's chemistry was well written and I liked how the characters developed over time. There was humor, and wit which I always love to see in a book.

Eleanor Goymer’s *The Plot Twist* is a delightful and inventive romcom that explores the messy, hilarious, and heartfelt journey of writing, love, and self-discovery. With its unique premise and memorable characters, this book is a refreshing addition to the genre that keeps readers entertained from start to finish.

The story begins when romcom author Allie Edwards meets Martin Clark, a bestselling crime novelist and self-proclaimed “publishing dinosaur,” at a party. Both are grappling with crippling writer’s block, overdue manuscripts, and mounting pressure from their editors. Their solution? Swap plots. This quirky and original setup is the perfect springboard for a story that’s as much about friendship and personal growth as it is about romance.

Allie and Martin’s partnership is the heart of the novel. Their unlikely friendship blossoms into a touching father-daughter dynamic, and their contrasting approaches to storytelling provide plenty of humorous and heartfelt moments. Martin’s wry wisdom complements Allie’s energetic determination, creating a dynamic that feels both genuine and endearing.

Adding to the charm is Will, a gorgeous and charismatic events caterer who sweeps Allie off her feet and fills the “leading man” void in her life. Their romance is sweet, sizzling, and full of the kind of tension that keeps you rooting for them. Goymer captures their chemistry beautifully, balancing the romance with Allie’s personal and professional struggles.

The writing itself is sharp, witty, and brimming with personality. Goymer’s knack for capturing the highs and lows of creative work adds an extra layer of relatability, especially for readers who have faced their own artistic challenges. The themes of taking risks, embracing change, and finding inspiration in unexpected places are woven seamlessly throughout the narrative.

With its clever twists, engaging characters, and a perfect blend of humor and heart, *The Plot Twist* is more than just a romance—it’s a celebration of storytelling, relationships, and the surprises that life has in store.

**Verdict:** A thoroughly entertaining and heartwarming romcom with an unforgettable premise. Eleanor Goymer delivers a feel-good story that will leave readers smiling long after the final page. A must-read for fans of books about love, writing, and the unexpected twists that shape our lives.

Very cute romance! Honestly, the plot of this reminded me a little of Emily Henry's Beach Read — I love that the two writers in this book swapped copies of their drafts and fell in love in the process. The writing was excellent and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

i wanted to love this story so much, but it unfortunately fell a little flat for me.

the plot was really interesting to me and i was very excited to dive into it. now - the plot was still unique and fun to read, but the pacing of the story itself had my interest waning. this book felt too quick in important parts and too slow in parts i’d consider “filler”.

allie and martin’s relationship was great! i did love seeing them interact and watch allie gain a father figure. martin and his wife are so adorable. i could read an entire series just about them!

i unfortunately didn’t enjoy the main couple. will is completely underdeveloped. for being the main love interest of a romance novel, he was incredibly one-dimensional and lacked any real depth. we don’t know much about him which is crazy to think since we’re suppose to root for him. allie is also just a character i didn’t enjoy. i can understand a character who stands in their way and self-sabotages - it’s just a reality for some people. but - allie does it EVERY chance she gets then gets upset with the outcome. she makes her life harder than it needs to be and i don’t find her a great person? she uses will for inspiration, but refuses to develop any sort of real relationship with him and then easily lies to him for her own gain. i just don’t think she’s a good person and it made it hard to root for her.

this book was okay. i don’t regret reading it, but i feel like for someone who usually really enjoys romance and books set in publishing, this fell quite flat.

I really enjoyed the idea of a love story between two authors, it had that feel that i wanted and was hooked from the first page. The characters had that feel that I wanted and was engaged with what was hoping for. I enjoyed getting to read this romance going on and was glad I read this. Eleanor Goymer has that element that I was looking for and was glad everything worked together.

The Plot Twist is a light and entertaining rom-com.

Allie Edwards is a rom-com author who has writer’s block. When she meets bestselling crime novelist Martin Clark at a party, they find out that they both need help to write their overdue manuscripts and decide to team up. On the same night that Allie meets Martin, she also meets a cute waiter named Will, who inspires her to start writing again. As Allie’s relationship starts to grow with Will, she realizes that she has a lot of decisions to make.

I really enjoyed reading about Allie and Martin’s friendship. They truly trusted each other and were able to open up to one another in times of need. I also really liked how Allie and Martin were the main characters in their own separate love stories.

Allie and Will’s relationship was very sweet. However, I wanted them to have more moments together. I felt like their relationship didn’t get the attention it deserved because this novel also had a couple other story lines, which made these story lines feel a bit rushed.

Overall, this novel had a heartwarming story regarding writers who wanted the best for one another. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters, but I would have liked to have read more about each of their personal relationships - both with Martin and his wife as well as with Allie and Will.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Plot Twist had such high hopes, but unfortunately, I couldn't finish the book.

The setup and plotline were very unique and charming. I loved the interactions between the lead character, Allie, and other characters in the story, such as Martin, Will, and Allie's best friend. I also appreciated the relatability of a writer experiencing writer's block and her journey alongside her mentor to overcome this obstacle through perseverance and his willingness to unravel his own love story with his wife.

For me, the book fell short due to its pacing. At times, I found myself willing the scenes to move on more quickly, but instead, we lingered on the lead character's reservations about whether she was following the right path or making the right decisions. Unfortunately, this issue was significant enough to stop me from finishing the book, though it did leave me wondering how the story concluded.

This book is perfect for someone more patient than I am and for those who absolutely love a unique romance story.

The best part of this whole book was the relationship between Allie and Martin. I just adored them but wanted to know more about Martin and his wife.

The rest of the book fell so flat for me. I was so excited based off of the summary of this book but the whole book disappointed me. I really struggled with Allie and her viewpoints on relationships. I couldn't connect with how she loathed her previous relationship, was all hot and bothered by Will instantly, but then roadblocked her whole relationship with Will. I agree with many other reviewers that I also did not like that she withheld information from Will. I also had a hard time with the fact that the only thing we know about Will is that he is defiantly not a waiter and she finds him really hot. With the lack of scenes between them, I am not even sure how they fell in love.
The book was just okay.

"The Plot Twist" by Eleanor Goymer is a light and entertaining romance, I read it in two sittings. Fans of contemporary romance will appreciate the witty banter between the characters. While the story is predictable and doesn’t delve deeply into character development, it was an overall enjoyable and fun reading experience.

Allie Edwards is a romance author who’s got writer’s block. When she meets best-selling author Martin Clark at a party they both realizing they’re each stuck with their books, and they decide to team up and help each other out. She not only gains a father figure , but she meets a cute cater waiter named Will. As her relationship with Will blossoms, the words begin to flow. But can she balance her career and her love life?

I had a really hard time connecting with Allie. She is the type of character who stands in her own way and refuses to take advice from well intentioned family and friends. It was frustrating watching her make decisions that to be honest just didn’t make sense. I didn’t understand why she needed to keep her relationship with Will at arm’s length rather than give herself an opportunity to explore something with a sweet guy. Despite being a woman in her 30s with a successful career, she behaved like a teenager a lot of the time. There’s also a situation that comes up that she keeps secret from Will and Martin, and I haven’t the faintest clue as to why. It makes no sense. I found her to be grating and hard to root for.

Will is underdeveloped, and we don’t really see many scenes between them. Because of this there isn’t much depth to their relationship. All we know of Will is that he’s hot and that he’s a waiter. We really don’t get to see who he is as a person; what his goals and motivations are. I also wasn’t too crazy about Allie using Will for inspiration, while admitting to not wanting to explore anything deeper with him. In fact, she purposely withholds information from him in order to have more time to write. It just felt gross.

I did enjoy her mentor/mentoree relationship with Martin. I thought it was really sweet and the banter between the two was fun. He and his wife are adorable, and it was really endearing to see the levels he would go to in order to make her happy. I also really loved her friend, Jess. We all need a friend like Jess. She tells it like it is and it always comes from a place of love. It was wonderful to see how much she was rooting for Allie, even though Allie took her for granted in my opinion.

While there were some things I liked about the book, the things I didn’t like overshadowed them.

Allie and Martin are both best-selling authors that have a bout of writer’s block. When they meet to discuss their writing and get past their creative blocks, they form a friendship.

As the story goes, Allie meets someone and ends up falling for him. She eventually has to choose between her career and the love that seems to write itself into her life.

This is a fast read and has all the elements needed for a cute romcom. There’s even a little bit of redemption written into the story.

Ok, like, this book was cute! It totally had me hooked with the whole writers-helping-each-other thing—it’s giving creativity goals. The banter between Allie and Martin? Loved it. So fun and quirky. And Will? Absolute cinnamon roll energy. 🥰

But, like, real talk? It did feel kinda predictable, and some parts dragged a bit. Allie made a few choices that had me like, “Girl, whyyyy?” Still, it had its sweet moments, and the vibes were totally cozy. Plus, the whole "swapping stories" concept was super fresh and fun.

It’s not perfect, but it’s def worth a read if you’re into feel-good romcoms with a bit of sass. Rounding up to 4 stars because, well, I’m feeling generous. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
