I’ve been reading this since I got it and I had to dnf.

I could not connect with the characters at all.

The premise of this story is really promising, I think for the right reader I can see how it works but it just fell short for me. I was never hooked. Allie was also just a little too juvenile for my taste.

Allie is a romance writer who's struggling with writer's block. She meets best-selling author Martin at a party and both of them realize they're stuck in their respective novels. They decide to team up and hope for the best by switching plots and telling each other stories. Only when Allie meets Will, the words start to flow again and she's stuck between love and her career.

I genuinely struggled to connect with Allie. She’s the type of character who constantly gets in her own way and refuses to take advice from her well-meaning family and friends. Watching her make decisions that didn’t seem logical was honestly frustrating. I couldn’t understand why she kept her relationship with Will at arm’s length, especially when he seemed like such a sweet guy overall. Will, on the other hand, feels underdeveloped. We don’t get enough scenes between him and Allie to feel any depth in their relationship. All we know about Will is that he’s attractive and what he does as a job. Beyond that, we don’t really get to see who he is as a person or what motivates him. Every interaction feels transactional, and like he's just a plot device and not a person. Also, despite being in her 30s with a successful career, Allie's behavior often felt more like that of a teenager, and it was endlessly frustrating. How she used Will and prolonged their relationship while keeping info from him, it made it really hard to root for her.

On a positive note, I did enjoy the mentor-mentee dynamic between Allie and Martin. Their relationship was sweet, and the banter had potential. I was more invested in them that Allie and Will, which is saying something. Martin and his wife were adorable together, and it was heartwarming to see how much he was willing to do to make her happy. I just couldn't get behind Allie constantly sabotaging herself and the pacing being all over the place for me to stay invested in the storyline.

Overall, this one was a miss. If it was more show and not tell, or more time was spent on developing Will and Allie's relationship, and Allie's responses were more realistic to her age, I could have been more invested. Instead it just wasn't quite something that I enjoyed.

Romcom author Allie crosses paths with crime author Martin at a party and finds out they both have writers block. With their deadlines coming up quickly they decide to swap stories. It is then that she meets Will and is stuck between love and her career.

I really loved the premise of this one and thought I would be in for a fun romantic read, however it ended up being a little underwhelming and I felt that I needed more. I found the main issue for me was that I took a long time for things to get going and it ended up a bit predictable. I also felt the chapters were overly long. I did enjoy the relationships between the characters though and found some parts entertaining. Not a bad book overall but not a favourite. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

This was such a fun easy read!

I really enjoyed reading this, I didn’t find that it was a little predictable and the conflict didn’t really seem necessary. I thought it was such a cozy and wholesome book and I loved the relationships between the characters and how they were all flawed in their own way, which made them feel so much more realistic.
I loved that this was about writing books and spoke about writers block.

It kept my interest for the first 25-30% but then slowly lost me. I liked the relationship between allie and Martin they’re so cute.

I was more interested in Martin and Angie more than allie and will lmao. They had no substantial chemistry or connection. The romance wasn’t compelling or interesting.

There was more tell than show and the writing was too simple for my taste.

Thank you NetGalley and One More Chapter for the ARC.

I read this and just really struggled. I believe that there is definitely room for improvement in the storyline. And maybe some more added romance would help bring the story back round.

3.5⭐️

Thank you to NetGalley and harpercollins for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This was such a cute read.

I really liked our main characters will and Allie

I loved the dynamic between Martin and Allie with exchanging the plot ideas and meeting up to discuss their writing. Also their mutual dislike for Jake.

My only criticism was the book was predictable at times but I really enjoyed it either way. I would definitely read another Eleanor Goymer book in the future.

The third act conflict was handled maturely and added to the plot. I like how the relationship between will and allie wasn’t rushed and felt realistic

The conclusion was so cute and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance without the need for spice.

Plot twist follows Allie, an author down on her luck and riddled with writer’s block. She’s desperately trying to put her editor at ease with the promise of a new book coming soon but life is just getting in the way and she has no love for writing anymore. Older author Martin is also experiencing similar issues as a classic in the industry. The older he gets, he realises he's losing his mojo. The pair decide to team up and try and recover their doomed careers before it's too late. The male love interest in the book, Will works for a catering company and meets Allie at one of the events she was attending. The pair hit it off and Allie tries to balance a blooming, new relationship with the trials of her unsettled career. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t connect with this book. I found Allie to be quite juvenile at times and quite blase about everything going on. Martin was a cute character to read about but I didn’t quite understand purpose of his role in the novel. I thought this was a romance about an author but this was secondary to the main plot of her dying writing career. Unfortunately for me this just wasn’t a book that I loved.
Thank you for the eARC!

I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Big thanks to Harper Collins and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of The Plot Twist by Eleanor Goymer!

When I read the blurb, I couldn’t help myself but dive right in. The start was fantastic, and I was immediately hooked 💖. It has all the ingredients to make a romance great: romantic tension, quirky characters, and a unique premise 🎣. But then, bam! All the subplots hit, and it felt like I was juggling a lot at once: writer’s block here, romance there, and a handful of other twists in between. At times, I wasn’t sure what to focus on! My ADHD brain was struggling a lot. 🤷‍♀️

On the plus side, I really appreciated how the book explores writer's block ✍️. As someone working in content marketing (not quite writing novels, but writing in the end), I felt those struggles deep in my soul. 😅 It was super relatable and real, and I loved how it was explored with such depth.

This love story is a work in progress

When romcom author Allie Edwards bumps into bestselling crime novelist Martin Clark at a party, they discover they both have crippling writer’s block, overdue manuscripts, and basically no words to show their editors. With deadlines breathing down their necks, Allie and Martin decide to swap plots and tell each other's stories. In the process, Allie gains a father-figure in Martin and meets Will, the dreamy events caterer who might just be the “plot twist” her life needed.

Caught between love and her career…what could possibly go wrong? 😅

While this book wasn’t my perfect match, I can totally see it being a hit for others! As a mood reader, I know that just because a book wasn’t for me, doesn’t mean it won’t be your next favorite. If you love layered romcoms with heart, humor, and a few twists, this might be the perfect pick for you! 📚✨

The Plot Twist was such a sweet sweet read!! I started this book among a reading slump so I’m worried my opinion might be a bit clouded by that but I found this book cute and interesting which kept me reading among a slump! I think the relationships between all the different characters were adorable and interesting, especially those between Allie and Martin! Their differences in ages, experiences, writing genres, and personalities made for a fun dichotomy to explore, especially as the book continued throughout the story! Will is an absolute sweetie and seeing his character development, alongside Allie especially, made my heart feel all warm and fuzzy!
I admittedly didn’t feel as if this book was full of too many “plot twists” and felt that the supposed “twist” in the novel was quite predictable. I don’t think that makes it a bad read, and actually provided me some comfort because one of the reasons I love romance is that there is familiarity in the predictability of love stories! I think this book was quite a cute comfort read with some sweet romance and interesting characters! I’m lucky to have received an e-arc in return for an honest review and am excited for release day coming up here soon! I give this book a rating of 3 ⭐️s yet still very much consider it an enjoyable read! A good reminder of such is that it helped me crawl my way out of quite a reading funk and kept me interested throughout albeit it feeling a bit predictable!

I adored The Plot Twist! The unique premise—two authors swapping genres to break through writer’s block—immediately pulled me in, and the execution did not disappoint. Allie and Martin’s unlikely friendship was one of my favorite aspects of the book; their dynamic was heartwarming, filled with humor, mutual respect and just the right amount of grumpiness from Martin. It was refreshing to see a mentor-like relationship develop alongside the romance.

Speaking of romance—Will was an absolute delight! His chemistry with Allie felt natural and charming, adding just the right amount of spice to the story. I loved watching Allie navigate the balance between love and career, making choices that felt authentic and relatable.

While some plot points were predictable, the engaging writing, lovable characters and clever dialogue kept me turning the pages. If you enjoy feel-good fiction with humour, heart and a dash of romance, this book is a must-read

Huge thanks to NetGalley for the E-ARC!

The Plot Twist had all the makings of a great book, but it didn’t quite hit the mark. The premise was promising—Allie, a romance author struggling with writer’s block, swaps genres with Martin, a grumpy crime novelist. Along the way, she meets Will, a charming caterer who could have been the perfect romantic lead. Unfortunately, the execution left a lot to be desired.

While the friendship between Allie and Martin was enjoyable and had some fun banter, the romance itself felt rushed and underdeveloped. Will barely seemed present, making it hard to root for the connection between him and Allie. On top of that, Allie’s decision-making was frustrating—she’s in her thirties, yet her choices often felt more fitting for a teenager. The book tried to juggle too many themes, from feminism to publishing struggles to found family, but none were explored deeply enough to leave a real impact. The pacing didn’t help either, with abrupt scene transitions that made it difficult to connect emotionally.

Despite the engaging premise, the story lacked the depth and development it needed. If the romance and character arcs had been fleshed out more, it could have been a much stronger read. Sadly, it just wasn’t for me, though I can see others enjoying it more.

This didn’t really hit for me. I loved the premise and the whole idea. It just didn’t deliver. Also I hate when a book is mostly inner monologue but is in third person. Gives me the ick

Allie Edwards is a romcom author battling a serious case of writer’s block, and teaming up with Martin Clark, a grumpy crime novelist from the ’90s, is her last-ditch effort to save her career. Their banter had me grinning, and their friendship became the emotional core of the book. Honestly, if this had been a grumpy/sunshine found family story alone, I wouldn’t have minded.
But this is a romance, so enter Will—the charming caterer who’s sweet, steady, and very much there. And that’s kind of the issue. While Allie and Will have potential, their relationship takes a backseat to all the other moving parts: Martin’s struggles, an editor showdown, and Allie’s own self-sabotage. The romance doesn’t really pick up until later in the book, and by then, I wanted more—more tension, more longing, more moments that made me feel why these two belonged together.
That said, The Plot Twist is still a cozy, comforting read—predictable but in that warm slice of cake kind of way. If you’re looking for a love story that’s as much about rediscovering passion (for writing, for life, for love) as it is about romance, this one delivers. Just don’t expect a whirlwind, high-heat love story—it’s more of a sweet slow burn with an emphasis on found family and creative rediscovery.

The Plot Twist by Eleanor Goymer had such a fun premise, but unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me. The idea of two authors swapping genres—one a rom-com writer, the other a crime novelist—sounded like the perfect setup for witty banter, hilarious mishaps, and maybe even some deeper exploration of creativity. Instead, it felt… predictable.

Allie and Martin, our two protagonists, are fine, but they never really felt fully developed. Allie is your typical quirky-but-stuck heroine, and Martin is the brooding, slightly grumpy love interest. Their chemistry felt forced at times, and while there were moments of charm, I never truly believed in their relationship. The genre-swap concept also ended up being more of a background detail than a driving force, which was disappointing.

The pacing was another issue. The middle of the book dragged, with too much focus on internal monologues and not enough actual tension or plot development. And the ending? Completely predictable. I don’t mind a familiar rom-com structure, but when you can see every plot point coming from a mile away, it takes the fun out of it.

Overall, I really wanted to like this book, but it felt like it was trying too hard to be clever without actually delivering anything fresh. If you love light, easy romances and don’t mind a very predictable storyline, you might still enjoy it. But for me, it just fell flat.

Thank you to One More Chapter, NetGalley and author Eleanor Goymer for this eARC

The premise of The Plot Twist sounded so great and I was super excited to read it. Unfortunately I didn't like it quite as much as I had hoped.
I loved the part of the story between Allie & Martin. I loved how their relationship developed and how they became so important to each other.

The romance between Allie and Will was fine. They had some cute moments, nothing earth shattering, but it felt like a real relationship could develop.

My main problem with this book was our MC, Allie, herself.
She is in her 30s but behaves, and makes decisions as if she is 15 years old and then just like a teenager doesn't take responsibility and blames everyone else.
She pretty annoying, obtuse and selfish. Sadly there was little character development so I could never really root for her.
3.75 stars because of the side characters though.

2.25 stars!

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC!

Firstly, I want to say that it was a quick and sweet read. Secondly, that despite the title, there was absolutely zero plot twists. The plot was boring and predictable. Two main characters lacked chemistry, it felt like their relations was forced. To me, it felt like every relations in this book wasn't 'real'. It missed emotions and in the end that was the main thing that made me want to DNF it (I didn't).

The Plot Twist follows Allie, a romance writer as she navigates a writer's block while undergoing a breakup. Then, to make matters worse, her editor leaves the publishing company under suspicious circumstances.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. I've been stuck in a bit of a reading slump, and this got me out of it. I enjoyed the friendships, particularly between Allie and Martin, another writer with a concerning bout of writer's block. That said, the romance was quite underdeveloped. There was a lot of potential there, but it felt a bit like the book gave so much to other aspects that the romance fell to the wayside and was a bit rushed.

A sweet and light hearted romcom. It was predictable at times, but I still really enjoyed it!
