This is such a fun and informative compendium of folk lore, tall tales, and myths about the ocean! The illustrations and design are beautiful. The little tidbits of information are extremely concise and easy to read, but still very educational. I liked the occasional extended stories. My favorite part of this book is the thorough coverage of stories from different cultures all around the world - especially those from indigenous cultures. I also REALLY loved that the index directs readers to pages where they can read about specific cultures. Very useful. The only gripe I have is that the main font could use some work on its kerning to make it a bit more readable. Every time I came across the word "often" I couldn't help but read "of ten".
Thank you Claire Cock-Starkey, Quatro Publishing Group, and Netgalley for the ARC!
Learn facts about different mythology related to seas and oceans, water creatures, seafarers, stormy waters, oceanography and dangerous oceans. Interspersed with quick easy to read facts about different creatures, mythology and legends, including Indigenous stories, this book has an easy to read layout. Throughout you'll find a couple longer stories, but the facts distributed throughout in each section were really well put together.
What a fun approach to myths, lores, and folktales! Rather than focus on particular region (like Nors mythology or Greek mythology) the author focused on a particular topic - the ocean - and featured all kinds of lores and myths from cultures all around the world.
It was fascinating to learn about the beliefs and traditions various cultures have held about the ocean, fish, the beach, and even pirates! The illustrations are beautiful and eye-catching. The facts are simple and short, easy to read and understand. The book also includes several stories.
Some of the pictures & facts might be a little dark or heavy for younger children or children who have never been exposed to mythology before, I would say this book is good for 8+.
Lore of the Deep would make a great addition to any family's bookshelf, especially if you're children are interested in the ocean and/or mythology and folklore!
This illustrated book is full of myths, lore and legends about the sea and its wildlife from all over the world. Very entertaining and educational. The illustrations are whimsical and dreamlike as can be. The only downside I found was due to the font (style and size). It wasn't the ideal choice for a screen. Maybe it renders better in paper format?
This is such a bright, beautiful book that is just packed with information. Every page has interesting new facts and stories about different stories and myths from around the world.
This is a great introduction to this area and every classroom should have it. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
A fun and beautifully illustrated book filled with facts about all things related to the sea and oceans. As someone who is interested in mythology, I enjoyed reading it. I'm sure this would be a great book for many people (young and old) to add to their collection. I would especially recommend it to those interested in mythology or the sea. It's also a great way to introduce kids to other cultures that are often barely represented in media.
Some things I noticed: the font wasn't always very pleasant to read, especially not when the text turned wavy. While I understood that was to minic the waves of water, it was a bit tough to read sometimes. Some pages also had white stripes on the sides, and one page was even turned upside down. I don't know if this will also be in the finished copy once this book got published on October 1st.
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher, and anyone else who made it possible for me to read the arc of this book!
Very much enjoyed this! A charming book that introduces creatures, myths, legends, gods, spirits, and much more from around the world pertaining to the ocean.
The illustrations were charming and cute and plentiful; every page had them, one for every myth mentioned, and they were all colorful and worth reading this book just to see the illustrations. The book was sectioned into six parts, with a short story-style myth introducing each, and each page revolving around a theme, like ships or primordial oceans or storm myths. The writing was simple and easy to understand. There’s a variety of myths from around the world (though obviously leaning toward places where the ocean is close by) and I also liked the variety in themes, going beyond gods and creatures to shipbuilding and sand.
Definitely good for kids who love mythology, or anyone who likes charming illustrations.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC!
This book was absolutely stunning and educational. Dreamy imagery, I think it would make a perfect gift for children or anyone who loves the ocean or fairytales. Gorgeous book!
This was an unexpected joy! The imagry and art work in this book are breathtaking. The format keeps things engaged I loved seeing all the diffrent take on mythos from various cultures. Definitaly would recomend for children to look at and learn with parents!
What a visually stunning book and one that was a pure delight to read. The illustrations within along with the accompanying writing make for a really lovely reading experience and whether seasoned reader or a younger audience, it’s a book for everyone.
I read this in one sitting and it went so fast. It’s one you could read over and over again and especially if you’re interested in folklore and tales, you’ll love it! Even if you don’t think you have an interest, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
From myths, stories, tales, superstitions, pirates and legends from around the world, you’re bound to expand horizons and take a few adventures out into the open sea when you read this. I really enjoyed it and would solidly recommend, it would be a great book to read with a young reader too.
I really enjoyed reading this beautifully illustrated book!! My favourite page was the Ghost Ships!
I know my class would love learning more about mythology.
