This was a nice book but i felt like it was too simplified.
It has great advice and i would recommend to someone who didn’t read a lot of parenting books.
This books offers a fresh perspective on parenting that promises a harmonious home!
A 7 step approach is offered. Responsive, nurturing and supportive are buzz words in this book. It promotes self regulation. And helps kids manage their behaviour.
Step 1 is about positive parenting language - showing us how to talk to kids in a responsive way, rather than a reactive one. Further steps include a focus on habits / routines, household rules/agreements, logical consequences and family meetings/discussions.
Practical strategies are included and modifications / examples of these based on approximate age of child are helpfully provided.
I love the language and perspective taken with this book - it is respectful to children and young people and really handholds a parent who might be navigating this for the first time. This is book I would 100% recommend to all parents, as I believe that following strategies such as these will have a positive life long impact on the children who are parented from this perspective.
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
Responsive Parenting for School-Age Children is a practical and relatable guide that takes the stress out of everyday parenting challenges. From sibling fights to forgotten schoolwork, it offers smart strategies and real-life examples that actually feel doable. What I loved most was the section on positive language—it made me realize how small changes in the way I talk to my kids could lead to smoother mornings and fewer power struggles. This book felt like a reassuring friend giving me the advice I needed!
Parenting isn’t for the faint of heart—especially when you’re dealing with missing shoes and last-minute school projects! But Responsive Parenting for School-Age Children? Total game-changer. The tips on breaking out of power struggles were chef’s kiss—I’ve already used a few on my kids, and wow, it works! Plus, the real-life stories sprinkled throughout the book made it feel like I wasn’t alone in the chaos. If you want to swap yelling matches for peace (most days, anyway), you need this book! 🧺🎒📚
As a mom of four, I am always in search of parenting books. I absolutely LOVED every page of this book. It was just phenomenal. It gave so much truth, honesty, encouragement, suggestions. I loved the way it was laid out for parents to understand, and to achieve and not feel as though its not possible. This book was wonderful! Every parent should have this book on their shelves.
This book couldn't have come at a better time. After struggling with two children under ten who were growing increasingly argumentative and constantly fighting with each other, this book delivered legit advice on responsive parenting. The scenarios in the book honestly made me feel like this book was written about my kids (or at least gave me comfort in knowing I'm obviously not alone in my struggles.) I've implemented several strategies with my kids and have already begun to notice a change in their behaviours, and therefore my own stress level. I recommend this book for anyone who might be having some struggles with young school aged kids!
This is a great resource for parents (and some things could be adapted to the classroom too; I’ll have to check out Teinert’s book on that subject). I appreciate the many practical, specific tips and examples of how to implement the 7 steps. The strategies are differentiated by age group. The visuals are also helpful in reinforcing the main points. While there are other books on the topic of responsive parenting, this book is unique in offering rituals of connection. My only tiny quibble: I'm still going to tell my kids "please" and "thank you" when I tell them to do something. I highly recommend this book!
