Mia Curtis is an artist at heart but a barista by day, she has been through a lot and has a lot that she cannot explain about herself, when she receives a package from England she is very wary of opening it up, her best friend finally gets her to read the letter and Mia has been left an inheritance from her late grandmother, Henrietta a person she never knew existed, she has a lot of questions to ask her mother, answers that then ensure that Mia makes the trip to England, to uncover the truths, what will she discover? Secrets from the past about generations of woman from her family.

1821 Sussex Philadelphia Boadle is married to Tailor, Jasper Boadle they have a young daughter and she works as a milliner alongside her husband, when she comes downstairs one morning and finds her husband dead, Philadelphia is the daughter of a cunning woman someone who helps people with minor ills and now Philadelphia has been accused of murdering her husband and of being a witch, the inquest is hard and there are lots of accusers, how will this turnout can she convince the jury she is innocent?

This is a wonderful story as Mia researches and uncovers so much about her past relatives the women many of whom had been accused of being witches and maybe she understands a little bit more about herself. I did very much enjoy this one I enjoyed getting to know the woman from the past and seeing Mia and her mother open up to each other.

This is one that I would highly recommend to any reader who loves a good dual time line story with wonderful characters and questions to uncover from the past.

This is a book of secrets, betrayal, jealousy, ambition and forbidden romance. It is a book that will draw you in and take you on a ride over two timelines. I love the way the two stories come together over time and countries. I enjoyed the Australian aspect of it too.

The writing draws you in as does the characters from Philadelphia Boadle husband Jasper in Sussex in 1821, who dies suddenly bring a not so good reputation upon Philadelphia. Then in Brisbane in 2024 we have Mia Curtis who receives a bit of a mysterious inheritance and with it secrets from the past.

A wonderfully written book that I enjoyed reading and loved the tale over the two timelines, the folklore, secrets and the differing ways of life over the times. A fascinating read. Loved it.

Thank you NetGalley and Headline for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

It was 2024 in Brisbane, Australia, and Mia Curtis had received the package two days prior. It was her best friend who'd finally persuaded her to open it, and when Mia discovered she had an inheritance, in England, from a grandmother she'd never known, she was stunned. Mia was restless in her life and didn't know what was ahead for her, so much against the wishes of her mother, Celia - her dad didn't mind - Mia flew to England to discover the little cottage, over two hundred years old, and now hers. The generations of women in her family had lived in the cottage, and Mia was determined to discover all she could about them, and also why her mother had left England, and her mother, Henrietta, and never returned.

Sussex, 1821, saw Philadelphia Boadle wake to the death of her husband, Jasper. She knew he'd had a stomach upset the night before, but didn't expect him to die. But as the constable, and the coroner began their investigations, and Philadelphia's horrible brother-in-law threw accusations at her, she was called a witch and those people of the village who she had helped in the past, called her a murderer. Philadelphia was determined to prove her innocence; she had a child to support and couldn't do it from prison.

Would Mia be able to unearth the secrets of the past, to navigate the lives of those women before her grandmother, way back to when the cottage was first built?

The Heirloom is another enjoyable historical novel by Aussie author Julie Brooks. I loved The Keepsake and The Secrets of Bridgewater Bay and this one was no exception. Told in two timeframes, 1821 and 2024, there were quite a few characters. But it was easy to keep them in line ;) Recommended to fans of the genre.

With thanks to NetGalley & Headline for my digital ARC to read and review.

A well written story from Sussex in 1821 to Brisbane in 2024. An inheritance that brings up many secrets that a family keeps.

Mia Curtis lives in Brisbane, Queensland and she has been starring at a package address to her from England for a couple of days and when her friend makes her open it and Mia's shocked to discover she’s inherited her late grandmother's cottage. Mia’s mother Celia moved to Australia from England decades ago and she told her daughter they didn’t have any family and now suddenly she has a long lost grandmother.

Mia travels to Sussex, England and to meet a probate genealogist and claim her inheritance. Mia’s grandmother was Henrietta Foord, she lived in a village called Sutton and in Puckridge Cottage that's been passed down to the women in the family for centuries.

The story has a dual timeline it’s set in 2024 and 1821 and is told from the two main characters points of view Mia and Philadelphia and is easy to follow.

Philadelphia Boadle wakes to find her husband tailor Jasper dead and she can’t understand why her nephew Isaac didn’t tell her he was unwell sooner. Philadelphia is the daughter of the local cunning or herb woman Susanna, and she’s accused of poisoning her husband and practicing witch craft. Philadelphia has to prove her innocence, not an easy thing to do when everyone thinks she’s guilty and protect her daughter Marjory from the gossip and bad feeling.

I received a copy of The Heirloom by Julie Brooks from NetGalley and Headline in exchange for an unbiased review. A dual timeline story delves into family secrets and mystery, and women who made possets and cures using herbs and ale and how they were considered witches and sorceresses.

Five stars from me, I really found narrative with a focus on folklore and age old traditions interesting and many women used herbs to cure the sick, animals, female complaints and to find a suitor and some could predict the future and a had what's known as a second sight.

The perfect choice for readers who think anything is possible and cleverly combined in a page turning and well written tale by Ms. Brooks.

With two timelines 100 years apart, we meet Mia, she has recently inherited her grandmothers cottage and travels from Australia to Britain to claim it.

She is struggling with life and has had enough of the drama.

I loved this novel. Withcraft, and scorcery are the crimes with which Mia's relatives have been charged with.

A generational tale that is a slow burn but ends up being beautifully told and a joy to read. I loved it

What if you could tell that bad events are going to happen? What if you are unable to convince others of danger until it takes their life and you live with the guilt? Then you find out that you had a grandmother who dealt in witchcraft? Mia can not seem to get her life on track after some events in the past. That was thirteen years ago. It is time to move forward. Will learning about her ancestors get her life back on track?

I enjoyed this story, with events from the past and present interwoven. Some questions were answered. Some questions were left with loose ends. I would have liked all of the loose ends tied up, but I quess I will have to wonder about some events. I enjoyed reading.
