Mia Curtis lives in Brisbane, Queensland and she has been starring at a package address to her from England for a couple of days and when her friend makes her open it and Mia's shocked to discover she’s inherited her late grandmother's cottage. Mia’s mother Celia moved to Australia from England decades ago and she told her daughter they didn’t have any family and now suddenly she has a long lost grandmother.

Mia travels to Sussex, England and to meet a probate genealogist and claim her inheritance. Mia’s grandmother was Henrietta Foord, she lived in a village called Sutton and in Puckridge Cottage that's been passed down to the women in the family for centuries.

The story has a dual timeline it’s set in 2024 and 1821 and is told from the two main characters points of view Mia and Philadelphia and is easy to follow.

Philadelphia Boadle wakes to find her husband tailor Jasper dead and she can’t understand why her nephew Isaac didn’t tell her he was unwell sooner. Philadelphia is the daughter of the local cunning or herb woman Susanna, and she’s accused of poisoning her husband and practicing witch craft. Philadelphia has to prove her innocence, not an easy thing to do when everyone thinks she’s guilty and protect her daughter Marjory from the gossip and bad feeling.

I received a copy of The Heirloom by Julie Brooks from NetGalley and Headline in exchange for an unbiased review. A dual timeline story delves into family secrets and mystery, and women who made possets and cures using herbs and ale and how they were considered witches and sorceresses.

Five stars from me, I really found narrative with a focus on folklore and age old traditions interesting and many women used herbs to cure the sick, animals, female complaints and to find a suitor and some could predict the future and a had what's known as a second sight.

The perfect choice for readers who think anything is possible and cleverly combined in a page turning and well written tale by Ms. Brooks.

With two timelines 100 years apart, we meet Mia, she has recently inherited her grandmothers cottage and travels from Australia to Britain to claim it.

She is struggling with life and has had enough of the drama.

I loved this novel. Withcraft, and scorcery are the crimes with which Mia's relatives have been charged with.

A generational tale that is a slow burn but ends up being beautifully told and a joy to read. I loved it

What if you could tell that bad events are going to happen? What if you are unable to convince others of danger until it takes their life and you live with the guilt? Then you find out that you had a grandmother who dealt in witchcraft? Mia can not seem to get her life on track after some events in the past. That was thirteen years ago. It is time to move forward. Will learning about her ancestors get her life back on track?

I enjoyed this story, with events from the past and present interwoven. Some questions were answered. Some questions were left with loose ends. I would have liked all of the loose ends tied up, but I quess I will have to wonder about some events. I enjoyed reading.

Struggled with this book at first but kept reading, enjoyed it when I did get back into it. The book is dual timeline and the characters are well written and the storyline unfolds to hold your attention.
First time reading this author but will look out for more from her.
My thanks as always to Netgalley and Publisher Headline | Headline Review for the chance of the early read
