Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This book has some fresh recipes that I can’t wait to try. I also like the tips and resources added as well.
I enjoyed reviewing this cookbook. I appreciated that it included crockpot and pressure cooker ideas. Nice photos. This is one I’d possibly buy for my recipe book collection.
Lots of great healthy recipes that actually look good. The photos are great! There are all kinds of foods that every home cook likes to make. Note: I was having some issues with the digital version, some pages were black and I couldn’t read them. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
I have followed Shawna online for years, so when I found out she was writing a cookbook, I was thrilled. A Healthier Home Cookbook did not disappoint. Part research and informative book, part recipes, I was thrilled to get some new staple recipes that are “a little less toxic.” Perfect Christmas gift for your crunchy mom friend who is trying her best to make better options for her family.
Maybe I’m just in a bad mood but I did not like this cookbook. The first part comes off a little preachy, condescending imo. The “chapter” pages are so dark (In the e-book) I didn’t realize they said anything at all until the 3rd section. I thought it was a black page. It would be nice to know what was in the section. The recipes sound delicious but I wouldn’t describe them necessarily as healthy. They are Whole Foods but that doesn’t mean healthy. The pictures are colorful but don’t do the recipes justice. Somehow they look either dry af or way too effing wet. (That macaroni salad looked more like a mayonnaise soup) This book is very beige in feeling.
After having been on a weight loss journey for the past six months (and down over 50 pounds) suffice to say my rolodex of go-to recipes was getting a little tired. Imagine my delight when I saw this cookbook of healthy and delicious looking food! Unfortunately, as is often the case in life, what was promised wasn’t quite reality.
First of all, there were a couple major issues with the formatting that started things off on the wrong foot. One was the fact that there are no chapters, which is pretty important in a cookbook in my opinion. Second, I was unable to navigate the book in landscape mode. Again, not a deal breaker but pretty inconvenient when you’re reading on your tablet.
And then it all pretty much went downhill from there. The thing that really stood out first was that there was no nutrition info. While it’s not an absolute requirement, if you are advertising yourself as healthy recipes then you really should try to include it. Now that can be overlooked however, if the recipes were good, which again sad to say, they were not.
For a supposedly “healthy” cookbook this was anything but, using copious amounts of butter and salt in seemingly every recipe. And then the serving sizes made absolutely no sense, with the default being four even on things like the Mississippi Pot Roast. I’m sorry, but in what universe is 4-6lbs of chuck roast appropriate for four people?? And this kind of thing was prevalent throughout the book, the pot roast just stuck in my mind because it was so ludicrous.
Anyway, suffice to say I was very disappointed with this and would absolutely not recommend anybody wasting their money on it. I’m sure there are much better cookbooks out there or you can subscribe to Eating Well magazine or better yet go to their website for healthy, tasty, and well researched recipes. The only reason I’m giving this more than one star is because the pictures of the food were pretty.
I really loved this recipe book. I am a healthy cook anyway but this gave me so many new ideas to give my diet more variety. The hardback is on my xmas list. Thank you to netgalley for this arc

This is a comprehensive and accessible guide for those looking to reclaim their kitchens from processed foods and chemicals.
With over 75 recipes, this book offers nourishing meals that focus on whole-body health, perfect for beginners and seasoned cooks alike.
Holman provides practical shopping guides and advice on kitchen essentials, helping readers make informed choices for healthier eating.
The diverse range of recipes, from hearty breakfasts to delicious desserts, includes options like grain-free chocolate chip banana bread, hearty soups, and paleo chocolate chip cookies. The mouthwatering photos and detailed instructions make each recipe approachable.
I Highly recommended for anyone seeking healthier, wholesome meals without the unnecessary additives!
This was very educational and the author did especially well in helping obtain the items she mentions. She doesn't expect you to magically know where to get things (like some books do). There are some things she is truly right about (get rid of those plastic cutting boards) and some she's not (but she does that you need to tailor it to your health so for me raw honey is a big no-no) but overall this is a good book. She makes sure that you understand you can tailor it to your food needs. For example, Holman, can't handle gluten but you are welcome to use gluten in your recipes. There are no what people would call "weird" recipes, it's all foods people enjoy anyway. The instructions are easy to understand and I like the full-color pictures.
I was attracted to this book because I am always looking for ways to cut back on ultra processed ingredients and foods. I am also trying to cook at home more (both for health and budget reasons). This book not only shares good lists of what to stock in your pantry (food and supplies) but also how to reduce toxic and ultra processed food. There is a variety of recipes with photos that I am eager to try. Some of them have ingredients I have not heard of so that will be new for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds for an ARC and I voluntarily left this review.
I am always looking for ways to incorporate healthier ingredients into my diet. This cookbook does a great job of providing recipes with fresh ingredients, easy cooking methods, and variety.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this advanced copy of A Healthier Home Cook.
Really great recipes, easy to follow. I was looking for a book that gave me recipes that don’t include processed foods and this is just that.
I will definitely be picking up a physical copy of this cookbook to have in my kitchen. She is very informative about the different toxins that are not only in foods but as well as the toxins in cookware. She goes into details about why she has chose a healthier lifestyle and its benefits. I bookmarked so many recipes that I want to try. A lot of them come with how to make your own dressing or mayo or even creamers. I defiantly will becoming back to this to spice up my cooking and to change my eating habits. I have looked for multiple cookbooks that have healthy options but all the food in them look tasteless and gross where this one almost everything mentioned sounds good and looks good. So this is the cookbook that I have been searching for and I cannot wait to start cooking some of the meals. I will also be looking into her other books as well.
I liked that there are a nice variety of recipes using fresh and wholesome ingredients and products that are nontoxic for a healthier way to feed your family.Beautifully photographed. I thank Netgalley and Fair Winds Press for the opportunity to read and review this cookbook.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I've read a lot of books about healthy cooking and I didn't find anything new in this book.
A healthier home cooks is a cookbook designated to making healthier choices in the kitchen, but in easier ways.
The chapters are
welcome to the a little less toxic kitchen
nourishing breakfasts
substantial salads and bowls
warming soups and stews
lighter plates
heartier dishes
sweets and sips
This might just be due to an ebook error but some of the pages were black and I tried changing the settings and nothing was seeming to work. All the recipes are gluten free in this cookbook. The recipes were easy to follow and straightforward. I would say for someone who is a beginner in the kitchen this book would be more useful as a more experienced home chef some of the recipes aren't as beneficial. Also as someone who doesn't have a pressure cooker I couldn't make a lot of the recipes.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am always looking for healthier ways to cook and eat and this book brought a few new ideas for me. This book covers a wide range of recipes along with ideas and information on shopping and ingredients. It is easy to follow and gives some great advise that anyone can follow.
Great recipes, wonderful information and tasty looking photos, this book will make you hungry for some healthy food! I will continue to use this book on a regular basis for sure.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
A Healthier Home Cook is a fantastic addition to any kitchen, especially to those looking to make simple, healthy and wholesome recipes. The cookbook is well-organized with a variety of recipes, ranging from breakfasts, salads and bowls, and soups and stews to both lighter and heartier meals and a good range of desserts and drinks. I do like that she incorporated information about what to look out for when it comes to using more non-toxic ingredients and products in the kitchen!
The recipes themselves are laid out well, in an easy-to-follow format. The pictures that accompany the recipes are absolutely gorgeous! These recipes don't require complex techniques, which make them perfect for both beginners and seasoned home cooks. Overall, I think this book is wonderful to be able to whip up some nourishing dishes even on busy weeknights with minimal effort!
This is a great book if you’re looking into eating a little healthier and trying to remove some of the more toxic items in the kitchen and pantry. It had some good recipes, and the pictures were bright and beautiful which I loved. I already made the French Toast casserole and it was delicious!
This wasn't just a cookbook with whole recipes, it also gave an approach to just trying to feed your body and mind better. I really enjoyed this but shifting to a healthier food eating habit meant that some money had to be spent to gather a lot of these ingredients. The recipes and pictures were great, but a lot more tedious. It was one of those - you had to do the work and spend the money to simply eat healthier. While I definitely appreciated that, get into this cookbook when you have plenty of time in the kitchen and don't mind spending a bit more money for certain ingredients.
With that, the photos were incredible. The first 40-odd pages were about being a healthier home cook with pantry basics and ways to treat food with your kids. I marked and would be making plenty of these dishes, but I really wished there were more main entrees. Plenty of gorgeous salads and breakfast items, but not as much main or sides as I wished they had. Desserts looked incredible as well.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this eARC. All opinions are my own.
